So, you are bored back home. You heard that you can go to Asia, or China, with a TEFL certificate, and teach English.
Some people even said you can do with without a college degree.
We get it, China is a great place to take a break and experience a new culture that is completely different than your own.
Pair that with the fact that the whole country is racing to learn English, and you have an explosion in the ESL industry.
Companies like EF (English First), Wall Street English, and METEN have taken over nearly every city in China, and in smaller places, every neighborhood seems to have it's own English training center.
This was all in the 2000's. So the question is, are the opportunities to teach English as a second language still here? Can you still teach ESL in China? What ESL jobs and salary can you expect? What are the requirements for being a teacher? How to avoid the pitfalls and scams some of these schools will try to pull?
We answer all of these questions and more in this video.

I must add something about teacher reputation. What you said is mostly the case for Western people. You didn't mention people who come from poor Eastern European countries. Most of us are highly educated, but since we couldn't find opportunity in our countries due to wars, politics, corruption ... we found opportunity here. I personally met loads of Americans or British who come here just to have fun. On the other hand most of us support their families back home by doing teaching, and take this pretty seriously. Greetings from Suzhou.

Hi guys, another good video. I did a similar gig as Winston teaching doctors and nurses a few years ago in Zhengzhou. The difference was that I was employed by a large hospital and all my classes were at the hospital. The folks I taught were sent abroad and then came back to teach their colleagues. It was a good job, not so good pay and long hours but I had the run of the hospital, free medical care and made a lot of awesome friends. I kinda wish I was still there after watching this video!

I've been following you lads for over a month now, the content is entertaining. The concept of seeing the scenery whilst you talk is more interesting than you locked behind closed doors. I've bingewatched all 3 channel contents (SerpentZA and Laowhy86), needless to say I'm fascinated. There has clearly been a boost in the editing of your videos Winston, bravo! P.S: You should avoid justifying yourself all the time Winston, no matter what you do people will critize you. You post great content, you expose the darkness so that we shall only see the light, keep going. KZfaqrs like Troy Cunty Nguyen are only here to remind you that when obstacles are on the way, that means you're going the right way.

Good video and good overview. I´m in China for half a year now and met a lot of teachers there. What I found is that nowadays many foreigners can get a proper teaching job in their major subject i.e. friends of mine are IT, Art, Biology and Dietary Professors at Universities in my city. So I think this is also a nice option because this way you can keep working in the field you actually know something about and are not just a tool for promotion but the universities hire you because of your actual knowledge about the subject.

I know soooo many good English teachers in China - so many who work at training schools. The alcoholics and wackos are there - but they are the minority and these days they don't last long. I am teaching and doing admin work in a high school. I have taught in factories, universities, training schools, kindergartens and held a variety of management jobs for foreigners. I have done curriculum development, online courses, online training, standards and compliance, teacher management.... These are things you can put on you resume.

I've been here in China teaching English at a training school for about a year and a half. It's been one hell of an adventure to say the least. I really enjoy it. it's like I'm working but my ENTIRE life isn't centered around my job and worrying about how I'm going to make enough money. I work 20 hours a week (maximum. only at 18.5 right now), occasionally volunteer to help with camps, which are hella fun, and the rest of the time I'm off on my own adventures.

Spent 5 months at a high school in Rugao (just northwest of Nantong) and loved every bit of it. Had 900+ students in the mid high school classes, two rooms for myself including a western style bathroom with heated shower and my own water heater. Balcony overlooking one of the school gates and part of the local city. The school had its own lunchroom and medical people so I never had to pay for food or a cough drop. The local town people all treated me very nicely, the school was very accommodating and while the money was not "great" compared to larger cities or even other countries you can teach in it is still an experience that will last you a life time. After all, I don't know all this talk about (I'm guessing a guy in the video is accused or rape?) but these are two guys riding motorcycles around China. Great to visit the "great Wall, forbidden city, drum tower and bell tower" but the just traveling and see and meeting is amazing. I have plans for 2018 and somewhere in the EU or Russia. So, some of the guys comments here are absolutely real and I can verify them but others I strongly disagree with. 16:33 they are wrong, going to a small city are and any of the schools in the area is simply amazing experience. Yea, graduate from the school and get your degree, get a TEFL and then go over, you wont make a lot of money but you will learn, grow and gain experience that no one else has. It never fails when someone see's my resume the surprise of "you went to china"?

I taught at EF and Aston and they definitely didn't focus on older students. Most of my students there were k-5 but we did teach middle/high school as well as adult classes, but they were not nearly as much as the younger students. Salary for me at that time was probably 7-8 thousand RMB a month but that also included an apartment rent free along with two weeks of paid vacation days. It wasn't a bad job at all.

Andrew Whyte a CELTA opens all the doors do it! Remember it is a difficult qualification they will hammer you but just take it because it's worth it you'll be a better teacher. After getting a job I learned so much more about teaching and English. Try to understand major grammar points and tenses if you've learned another language it's easier. Read one of Jeremy Harmer's books on TEFL before you do the course. If you love language acquisition it's the perfect job but many people don't understand it and think it's only a gap year thing.

Glad to hear, some of the replies to this video make teaching English sound horrible. I have a son interested. So I am interested. He has studied Mandarin for over a year. Can't imagine attempting to teach English without an understanding of the pupil's native language.
@Storm4155
@Storm4155 7 жыл бұрын
As long as you have any of TEFL, TESOL or CELTA and a degree you are fine and can get a good job. The best jobs are in the international schools(double the salary of most other teaching jobs), but you have to have two years teaching experience and you have to do a kick-ass presentation to get in and you have to produce lesson plans for scrutiny before they let you anywhere near a classroom.
@harper277
@harper277 7 жыл бұрын
Js Travelers They really don't want you to use Mandarin I have a good knowledge of Mandarin but I have to study in my own time as I'm paid to speak English. I choose remote areas because there are fewer people who want to practice English with you and you can't survive without using Chinese, if you have problems the school and the students usually help you. Living in China has changed my life.
@Storm4155
@Storm4155 7 жыл бұрын
+Js Travelers Gavin is correct, most schools don't really want you to use Mandarin in the classroom, though I think it is pretty useful at times. Some teaching systems actually have a zero tolerance towards Mandarin. I lived in a rural area for a year and honestly you can get by anywhere in China with no or very limited Chinese and also there will always be some locals who can speak English. Of course you can't really interact very well with non-English speakers, so the more you learn the better. Tell your son to come, it will probably be a great experience, but it all depends on his attitude. The people are very welcoming and are good hosts.

Depends on where you teach if employers back in the west care or not. I’ve had plenty tell me they liked my experience a lot overseas. I only taught university in china and I also worked for Air China helping teach flight attendants etc. So maybe it depends on age group.

One thing that really pisses me off is that my experience as an ESL teacher is not valued back home when in fact, like they have mentioned here, it was a very demanding and challenging job. It was not easy to teach English and yes it took a lot of time preparing lesson plans and studying new methodology. I'm not saying that it should translate into some great gig back home but it should qualify you for some entry level positions for sure.
@JohnSmith-fk4yj
@JohnSmith-fk4yj 6 жыл бұрын
The problem is, there are ESL jobs where someone can get away with just showing up, singing a few songs and shouting at the kids. Where all that matters is that they are white and they are there. There's no way to tell if someone was working like this or working like you. Also, most Western countries want you to go through their training systems. Which often doesn't take long.

Thanks for the new video and "keeping it real, gnome sane"... I am still considering applying there as I have the experience and degree. I am just worried that it could be too extreme. My Chinese friends living in America have all told me that they think I wouldn't like it (they must not like it as they are doing all that can to stay in the USA). I am just really starting to dislike my degree that i am working on here in Germany. I miss working actually. I know both of you are married, and successful. I would just like to see a video on where you see yourself in 10 to 20 years. I sometimes dream about not returning to the USA (has nothing to do with Trump, more so just being bored with the people). But thanks again.

My Dad lectured at a university in Guangzhou and all 5 of his sons visited China (from England) so he took us to his class which was the first lesson of the semester. He introduced us to the class and split the class into 5 groups where we could talk to them in English. We did it in two of his classes and there was only 1 male in each of the classes! We went out for food with them after and the girls told us there were less males because they are more lazy and not as many go to university. Dont know if thats true but thats what they said.

Paul Stainton That might be true not only for China but also for other countries. For example; the number of female doctors is increasing in Europe. This might be caused by the male female gap. Men are more physical (dirty hands jobs, mechanics, engineering) while female tend to look for the more clean jobs ( teaching, languages, medical field).

Please don't pretend to be foolish. You know it just depends on different majors. My major is language study in Canada, and more than 80% students in my class are female students; but in IT major, more than 80% are male students. In China, it is same.

one of the reason of the decline of English teaching job is because the number of Children is dropping really fast. My elementary school has already disappeared and my junior high is in the process of closing down.

The gender gap is a perpetuated "sensationalistic bait piece" / yellow journalism spouted by western media. It's a piece that is always used against countries for bait click journalism. Of course ever single developed nation has a decline of birthrates due to many social and economic factors. Google "Fertility rates drop to lowest level EVER in America", Germany, any other other developed country and it is the same thing. But people tend to use other countries like in Asia so it can be used more of a finger pointing or "look at them, they're pathetic" type thing to try to perpetuate stereotypes and flex their ego and superiority against other countries. Goto Wikipedia and search demographics of China. The available women between the age of 15-64 years / ratio is 1.06 male(s)/female (2008 est.). Hardly the "demographic crisis of a unprecedented scale" as you say, nor the "so many desperate men". Judging by your avatar you are saying these things to emasculate Chinese men as they are now your competition for sexual partners as the girl in your picture is Chinese/Asian. Congrats on being the stereotypical White in Asia expat.

The population problem is very serious, that is nothing but truth. Firstly, the drop of the birthrate is not graduate, it drop very suddenly. In this time, most people who are born in 1980s, 1990s and late 1970 have no siblings. So when they become the majority of work force, what kind of economic effect it will have? And who gonna support their parents? Secondly, speaking of the imbalance male and female population. You should not focus on the ratio between 15-64 but the ratio for younger people. And about the data published by Chinese government, they are just too flexible. Before the application of two children policy, they claim there are about 20M more man, then they say 30M more. But after the start of the new policy, they find most parents still only want on Child, therefore they give this ratio. If you care about Chinese issue long enough, you will learn how to read Chinese data critically.

In this time, this problem is still not obvious in urban area, yet in country side, it is just crazy. The number of marriageable women is very low, and males in country side need to pay a lot to get a chance to get married. Many women from China and south east countries are kidnapped and sold to the country side. In most of the country side, an increasing number of male have absolutely no chance to find a wife forever, and they will become a big problem for social stability.

I honestly don't think this declining is bad. Our world resources are disappearing rapidly due to a number of people we have to feed. If we can control the world population at a certain rate it will definitely help.

***** it is true. But if one couple need to support four elderly citizens, there will be problem. Besides, Chinese economy still relies on the huge scale of working force.

I'm just starting into my final year of my Chinese language / TESOL bachelor's degree and this video is very reassuring to watch. I was on exchange in Xiamen late last year and got myself a contact that I could maybe work for next year or year after but I was really surprised to hear about those big companies that will pay for flights and accommodation to get qualified teachers over to China. Sounds like it could be quite convenient to get started rather than just going from scratch in whatever city. What's the situation like on translation and interpreting jobs? Does anyone have some knowledge of those fields, like how the pay / job availability / qualification requirements are for the jobs there? If it's generally better than teaching English then I'd be super keen to make that a proper career goal. Hopefully someone can shine some light. Thanks for the video ADVChina.

My experience with teaching in China is really laid back. I teach anywhere from 14-22 classes a week. It is one of the easiest fun jobs I have ever done. I just finished my first year and plan to stay here long term.

I'm loving your videos, guys! I was actually wondering about the possibilities regarding getting jobs as a math teacher. I'm graduating soon with a degree in math, and I've been looking through postings on Dave's ESL Cafe for jobs in China. It looks like there is some demand for math/science teachers at international schools. I assume these positions are more competitive, but would you say they are lucrative/highly regarded? I'd really like to be teaching using my degree, since I'd actually be qualified. Thanks! Keep making awesome videos!

On the subject of parents teaching their own children, that's something that's like suuuper common here in Mexico, like when I was in middle-high-school I must've had at least 5 or 6 classes where one of my teachers had a son/daughter in the classroom...

A good EFL job is one that pays a decent hourly rate and does not require office hours or baby sitting duties beyond the teaching hours. This is hard to find, but it is possible. Many schools will try to get you working 45+ hrs, 6 days a week plus monthly field trips etc, but only pay you for 20 hrs. DON'T DO IT! Once you get roped in, it becomes difficult to get out of that sort of situation...

Thank you for your insights! Have you guys ever had problems with getting your work visas? I would really appreciate it if you could make a video on the application process and whether it really requires an extreme amount of paperwork translated to Chinese and authentication? I am from Russia, but I am pretty sure that work visa routine is pretty much the same for all foreigners?

speaking of guys driving on the wrong side of the road, I was in a cab today and was in an accident. It was a three car pile up because the guy in the back hit the car behind the cab, causing that car to lurch forward into the cab. mind you, this was at a red light and it all could've easily been avoided if no one was tailgating. On the way back home, there was yet another accident on that same intersection where an suv hit someone from behind.

So basically if you have no qualification and land a super sketchy job the experience you will have is going to reflect that. Well I think that's pretty much exactly how it is in America. Working at a McDonald's with no education is gonna be a shit experience. So basically, get a degree, get the qualifications you need, and go through a reputable agency and you will land a job reflecting that. Thanks for making this video! I asked about it a couple weeks ago and you said it would be coming shortly. Been checking for it every day and it's finally here! Thanks for the great content. This will be tremendously helpful. Now I know what agencies to go through and what age group NOT to teach.

Have a family friend (Chinese family) that is the head of gastroenterology, as well as the head of his hospital's international program. So a couple of times a semester I'll give a few lectures to some of the potential candidates for overseas programs at the Medical University. I used to also tutor a few doctors in a very similar vein to your old job. As he's a family friend I'll still take on a doctor to tutor once or twice a year if needed, but I haven't taught full time for over 3 years now. The University jobs are always the best. I had one years ago and taught something like 7 classes a week. And besides from having to go along to the occasional government function was pretty free to do what I liked the rest of the time. I taught English, English geared towards engineering and Tourism. Maybe it's more to do with your location but I've noticed that demand in my neck of the woods has increased and the number of Native speakers has dropped off. I've been contacted by friends of mine that work for schools (both private and public) saying that they can't find any Native speakers to work. And the increase of Russians pretending to be from Canada or Australia etc has grown a lot in the last couple of years. I remember reading a while ago that applications for foreign workers and the number of foreign workers in China has been falling off since 2013. I've noticed a lot more students from non-native speaking countries in Wechat groups, those being the most common "noobies" that you find in groups.

On your next "Conquering China" documentary, will you guys be visiting small out of the way villages ? If so, will you guys be introducing some American culture like snacks/candies, literature,gadgets,Disneyland and the like to these small town folks? It'll also be interesting if you could ask them about their general perception of America and show them some of your footage from the recent trip to the U.S.A..

I would like to clarify that most of the quality training centers (Web, EF, Meten) have very little tolerance for the drunken losers that aren't serious. Most of the teachers in these centers are very professional and have at least a bachelors degree and a TESOL, TEFL or CELTA.

That's a lie... Meten has mostly Russians working for them as the hourly rate is so low no one but Russians wants the job.. Not trying to belittle Russians.. but a very small percentage can actually speak English.. In EF, there are natives... are they qualified to teach? Hell no...
