I go in depth about the pros and cons of working for EMG Education as an english teacher in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. As an expat I teach English in Vietnam throughout the public school system in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). This is based on my experience working for this company in 2021 from February-June.

thank you this was so helpful! during the hours you have to stay in the office, are you able to get on with other things? watching stuff, blogging etc? Also, when they 'blacklist' you would that impact being able to come back in later just as a tourist/on a tourist visa, or is it just preventing you for working in vietnam in the future?

I’m glad! Yeah you can but they don’t have WiFi there & all “fun” websites are blocked on work computers. Yeah so I believe the “ban period” is 5 years- so during that time you won’t be granted entry into Vietnam or be issued a visa of any kind 🥺

No problem! It’s actually a terrible time to move there- I wouldn’t recommend it at all. I left because of how bad the lockdowns are & most of my friends did too. Hiya. I just left Vietnam because lost my income several times in 1yr. But one other reason I left is because of the new decree that states that you must have 5yrs of checkable teaching experience outside of Vietnam. Do you have this? EMG is a great stepping stone for those who, for whatever reason, didn't acquire their stateside US teaching license, PGCE, etc. prior to moving abroad. You can knock out a couple years of experience whilst finishing your post-graduate certs and then apply to bilingual academies and/or third-tier internationals schools and off you are! I worked there and totally left without being blacklisted. A colleague of mine, a licensed educator from Canada, was also able to satisfy the terms of his contract without being blacklisted. However, I can confirm that several other teacher friends of mine were indeed blacklisted. So I suppose it's a bit random.

EMG is a total mess for many reasons. The bigger issue is whether any foreign teachers will do anything other than pity the Vietnamese and make excuses. If you're a foreigner and lied to about a contract, somehow it's your fault and you shouldn't even speak out because it's not your country. Look at all the Vietnamese who are manipulated by employers too. I'm glad you're making this video, but I wonder how many other of the foreign teachers just see this and roll their eyes. As long as the narrative is controlled by the employer, it doesn't matter what they do because it will all be forgotten.

They’re a shitty company, but to be honest I never knew of anyone personally getting blacklisted. You must have seen some of the people hired to work there, some pretty unstable people will get hired. As far as your case you breached a contract while this company was sponsoring you to stay in the country, i dont like emg, but i would blacklist teachers that pull "runners"

These kinds of "must stay in the office while doing nothing" teaching jobs are perfect for those who are also Digital Nomads. Spend that office time doing your freelance programming, website design, copywriting - but maybe not online teaching, which would be too obvious - to both cover your ongoing visa sitation and bring in two salaries. Perfect. The blacklisting thing maybe isn't so perfect, though. Maybe just do your two years with a good salary(s) and then GTFO of the country. If you are a fully-licenced teacher, obviously don't sign with them in the first place. That seems quite clear from the two anecdotes in the video.

Ya if international schools were sponsoring visas during covid I would’ve gone that route for sure! But good point about the digital nomad thing :)
