22 hrs a week can mean anywhere between 35-50 in reality. Lesson prep, marking writing, marking tests, posting a quota of learning aid materials, fixing problems with a new course that isn't developed fully yet etc, dealing with problem students , preparation for observations (ie "professional development") , dealing with school equipment issues, breaks in between classes where you aren't paid but it's not long enough to actually do anything etc all of these things are a part of your contract and are done outside of the paid teaching hours. I'm not saying don't try it, but new teachers should be made aware of this reality and not mislead.

Yes, there is additional work over and above teaching hours. Lesson planning is the biggest chunk of the unpaid workload as an ESL teacher and the time it takes depends on the teacher's experience and how much material the school provides. But it usually won't be more than around 30-35 total work hours per week (if you teach 22 contact hours) for most ESL jobs though.

22 hours Full Time, clearly that's not a full week. Where normal people work more hours during the week, teachers are no different. Although contact hours are 22, the pay often takes into account planning time and everything else on the side. It's the teachers job to make their downtime more efficient, improve their planning skills and so on.

In general IELTS is actually a money making scheme with very little use in real world, one big tip is be natural and don't try too hard. If your vocabulary is good and you watch a lot of English content for 3-4 months and start understanding it well then you should be ok for about 7-7.5 score. There are two kinds of people, people who are naturally good, and people who have to practice, choose your category but approach is same, be a natural speaker and writer without having to think to answer a question. But finally IELTS is a money making scheme with underpaid testers, substandard equipment and loads of obsolete tactics.

I will agree with one particular aspect of this (from a perspective of being in Cambodia )which is that schools do seem a bit desperate . Eg my school employed only (almost 100%) native speakers (for the expat jobs)for my first 10 years here but since post covid reopening they have hired , at my campus, approx 50% non-native English teachers. And it is a top school. I've never seen anything like that here.

I can only speak from my experience teaching in China, but age is not a consideration provided you have the right 'face.' What I mean by this, is that Caucasian teachers are preferred over all others. This sucks, but this is how it is here. I don't have experience in other Asian countries, but I have heard from people here that have taught in Thailand, this is still prevalent. As for teaching, why do you want to do it? Is it necessary to have the extra funds coming into your account or is it because you need to do it to live in Vietnam? I'm not sure if you're aware, but Vietnam doesn't offer a retirement visa like Thailand, Cambodia, or the Philippines. You'll need to travel out of the country after a set period of time, and then fly back in or whatever. And this can lead to questions being asked by people at immigration. One thing I have heard, is that the government is meant to be meeting about immigration issues, and there might be a possibility that in the future, they will change their stance on issuing actual retirement visas. If they do that, and you have a decent amount of funds built up before moving, then working isn't exactly retirement, and it might be better to just find another country to live in. As for the personal training thing, you might be able to get some extra work but it's risky too. If you're on a retirement visa, in say Thailand, then you literally cannot do anything else to earn money under the terms of that visa. It's against the law and you'll get in trouble if you are caught, so you'd be taking a risk. It's why despite the fact that I could make good money teaching privately here, I won't risk it because I have a family here. At the end of the day, once I get to the point where I'm able to retire, unless something drastic occurs that will necessitate me going back to work, then I won't do it. I'll be chilling on a beach, sipping a beer or coffee, and reading a book. I guess it boils down to what you consider to be an acceptable use of your time. Hope this helps in some small way.

@@mikelmeadows6254Vietnamese people dont discrimate foreigners based on their skin colors as long as you follow some common rules like any other society. You need to have a bachelor degree at least and have a citizenship from native english speaking countries like us, uk, australia, canada and newzealand.. Most foreign english teachers in vietnam can easily make more than 2000k a month and live comfortably with local cost of living. Of course some can make even better with 3-4000k in some international school or private teaching schools but its a little more demanding.

In Japan for example, there are no criminal-record checks; however, I would put your mind at ease since typically there are most often (always at my schools) always several staff including other teachers and usually a school manager present at all times. Kid’s classrooms normally have windows and parents are allowed in the classroom to observe lessons anytime. I’ve never taught in Vietnam. If I were you, I’d visit the school with your kids and observe their first 1-3 lessons to make sure you are comfortable. My bigger concern would be the quality of the instruction.

As a Vietnamese IELTS teacher, native speaker is the best choice and get paid highest. Vietnamese teacher is the second best choice with CELTA qualification and graduate international student from England, U.S.A, Australia. As students are Vietnamese right, so it would be a lot easier to communicate in their mother tounge. That is why Vietnamese teachers are pretty good choice, and they get paid lower than native speaker teachers too. For foreigners who speak english as second language, as long as you look white some Vietnamese parents would love to let their kids be your students. But trust me, it is not a really great idea as you are basically a non-native speaker trying to prove your proficiciency in English.

I'm quite surprised at the salaries you mentioned. I visited Vietnam in early 2017 Where I remember salaries were 22-25 $ per hour. Back then salaries in china were a bit higher but not a massive difference And the work was more demanding. more hours and mandatory hours in most schools outside of teaching hours. In 2019 while living in china I was still thinking Vietnam is probably the better choice for a teacher who comes for a year or two, although in china the salaries were around 3k Nowadays those same teachers in china could easily require 4 and up to 5k With decently long holidays throughout the year.

If you’re after the money, China is the place to be. I made about $3,500/month for teaching 9 hours at most at one point. Problem is that ppl tend to go kinda crazy if in China too long, and the jobs there are pretty ridiculous. A lot of them don’t really consider you to be anything other than a fancy object the school owns, so job fulfillment and pd potential is incredibly low. There are exceptions of course though. Vietnam offers a more rewarding experience imo, but to each their own

In my case I have a felony marijuana charge. According to the attorney I had spoken with, by completing my B.A. I will qualify to have my charge expunged (June 2025). This is the state of Illinois and different states may vary in law though. I just finished my A.A. and have a clean record otherwise. Once your charge is expunged, only law enforcement will see the expunged charge and a potential employer would not see the expungement. I want to teach in Vietnam also. Having an FBI criminal background check, school transcripts etc. and take them to the Vietnamese consulate in whatever state you are in and they will translate it to Vietnamese for potential employers. This is the process I have to go through. Good luck !!

Just a small point on English grammar/vocabulary: at 01:26 you mention 'less hours per week' when the correct term is 'fewer hours per week'. 'Less' is used for aggregates (time, salt, traffic) that cannot be counted whilst 'fewer' is used for things that can be counted (hours/days, grains of salt, cars/vehicles).

Most of your pay salaries are off. But I wont get in to that. As for international schools. Seen and worked for some at 1500, Nha trang. Not worth it. My advice fine do teaching them government ielts. That's 2500 to 3k year round. Most jobs you mentioned aren't. Beyond that I encourage everyone have a second type of job, income outside of teaching. Lots of opportunities. This will help you while local or when you leave. Get a license to marry, someone, real estate license, these days you can get it and still sell houses in home country. Get a counselor certificate help people online on many global websites. Improve your language skills.

As of January 2023, Vietnam is flooded with teachers and wages remain low. Do not be naive and fall for all the sugar-coated talk you hear on sites. The ESL industry here is going downhill. They now prefer many Europeans, or teachers form all corners of the world who are non-native speakers because they work for lower wages than native speakers, and they also use this as an excuse to pay lower wages. You will see 25-35 people applying for one job as of 1/2023. Furthermore, some of these non-native English speakers have worked themselves in to HR and language school managers who will only hire teachers from their non-native English -speaking home country. It is not a fair system at all. They prefer young teachers under age 35, often state you must be good-looking, and often hire women over men regardless of accent, experience, or education.

@@ninja.teacher Receiving offers and getting a job are two different things. I don't know where you get your data. Seriously, i was taking to people from Africa, i think it was Nigeria. She told me she wouldn't care earning 300 USD per month in Vietnam. Her dream is to come with a Visa for long term and do Partime Jobs. The companies that are selling TEFL, TESOL certification are making up the situation to look easy to teach. Even native speakers are scammed by schools. Even people which the list of 80 countries , they are teaching illegally with a tourist visa. 😂 There are a lot of native English speakers backpackers with not TEFL who just cross Cambodia every month. People from Chile don't even need Visa for 3 months.

It used to be that ESL was a reliable industry for people that went abroad, found they liked it, and wanted to stay. Then KZfaqrs started posting videos about how cheap countries were and how much banh mi and beer you could afford on teachers' wages. ESL has since become a vehicle for desperate economic migrants. The supply of teachers swelled and the quality of work and remuneration shrunk. As videos like Ninja Teacher's continue to bring in foreigners interested less in foreign culture than a cheap apartment and job that demands little expertise, it's no wonder the industry is now a race to the bottom, and that locals increasingly dislike the entirety of ESL teachers.
