What's an average salary for a teacher in Cambodia?
What's they pay like as a teacher in Cambodia?
Hopefully this video helps answer that question for you.
In summary:
With no degree and under 2 years of experience: $400 - $700 per month
With a TESOL/TOEFL/college degree: $700 - $1,100 per month
With a degree and 2+ years of experience: $1,700 - $2,500+ per month
*Remember these are just estimates and if anyone knows otherwise, comment down below*
This information is very difficult to find online because salaries are typically not discussed among foreigners. You can thank me in the comments. ;) Hope it helps you on your international teaching adventure!

Just last year I was going to teach English and received 2 solid offers in Phnom Penh. I have no experience and only hold a hs diploma and a TEFL. School one, I was offered $1200 per month with potential bonuses and this was teaching 6-12 year old age group. I was also offered a job teaching hs age students and that paid $1500 per month, no bonuses, no perks, straight pay. Unfortunately, my Filipina 🌈fiance *hated* the khmer experience and we had to retreat.. 😅💜 Take it easy brother. ✌🏻

Awesome that you got those offers. What schools were they? Super curious since many people didnt know where they might be able to get a job with just a TEFL degree. Bummer that your beautiful Filipina didnt have as good of a time in Cambo. Hopefully you can enjoy some Cambodian adventures through youtube though. Thanks for dropping this comment.

@@ThatGuyInCambodia the one who offered $1500 was the Golden Gate American School and I can't remember the other. Sort of low level, a khmer name. But I certainly will stay watching. I wanted to keep up to date, incase I decide to be apart for a bit to make. Some cash for a year. 👍🏻Thanks bro. ✌🏻

Thanks, that's good to know. Yeah, it's certainly possible to live on less than $500 a month so you could save quite a bit after a year. Let's hope your wife gets a better experience with Cambo next time.

A 1K salary is almost unheard of in Siem Reap, and I never heard of flights and accommodation being part of a package. A lot of schools pay by the hour, so it's down to how many hours you teach. Also, it's rare to get paid for term breaks, national holidays or exam marking, so factor in about a month and a half over the year with no income. I worked at a well-known university in SR for 7 years and a couple of other schools before that and received a single pay rise in that time. I believe it's still the case that $10-11/hour is about standard. You need 3-4 classes per day to be comfortable. You also need a work permit, which is supposed to be arranged by your employer but rarely is.

Thanks for letting us know about the situation in SR. I hadnt heard much about teaching up there. After hearing that, i am certainly grateful for a job in Phnom Penh.

So cool to find you! It was so hard to find those informations. Where are you from. I'll be looking when I get my degree (soon). It's a canadian degree so I don't know if all international school give the same salary more or less or if it depend. In fact, I'm french. I don't know if I can also apply in a french internationnal school or if I need to go with the canadian. Last thing, they have music teachers there?
@ThatGuyInCambodia
@ThatGuyInCambodia Жыл бұрын
Glad you came across the channel. There is actually a french school here so you might be perfect for it. They may want prior years of classroom experience as most of the international schools do, but you could reach out to them. And YES plenty of music teacher positions in Cambodia. Many are filled but opportunities arise. Toss in an app

How much of the language used in Cambodia are you required to know to teach English there?
@ThatGuyInCambodia
@ThatGuyInCambodia 4 жыл бұрын
Great question, almost none at all. Learning the local language definitely helps you teach English grammar better and understand what parts of English local Khmer speakers struggle with the most. However, most schools don't require their teachers to learn it.

Hi, can a nnes get a job as an english teacher in Phnom Penh? However, I don't have a tesol certificate. Is it possible to get a job? My english is not bad. Thanks for the video!
@ThatGuyInCambodia
@ThatGuyInCambodia 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. Yes, a nnes can get a job here but a tesol certificate or some other verification of your level of English or experience teaching English would be good. A nnes might have to take a job at a smaller school and maybe even a smaller school in the province, but those jobs do exists. Teaching online is a great option right now since many schools are closed cause of covid-19. Hope this helps.

@@ThatGuyInCambodia Actually, I don't hold a tesol certificate YET, i'm taking an online course on an platform (coursera), not sure if you've heard about it but the ASU (Arizona State University) delivers the modules through this website. As far as I understand, this certificate is accredited internationally but I'm not sure if that will boost my CV and increase my chances to get a teaching job, needless to say I'm white (not caucasian though), so I don't know if that will increase my chances and I also got a brit/kiwi accent, most of the times natives can't tell that Im not a native speaker . Thanks for your quick response!
@ThatGuyInCambodia
@ThatGuyInCambodia 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, maybe instead of saying its coursera attatching the certificate and indicating whatever institution created the course. If a university backed the course it could make it more reputable. And yeah, if you already have a brit/kiwi accent, attach a video of you speaking. Just keep applying and contacting places. Even for me it took sending my application to many institutions for months before hearing back. Keep it up and let me know where you land.

@ThatGuyInCambodia
@ThatGuyInCambodia Жыл бұрын
It all depends on the job. If you’re paid hourly you might be able to land a $13-20/hr job in which case 20hrs a week would be 260-400 weekly. Honestly easy to live on as a single or couple. All about the job though so go apply and share with me what you land!

@@Whatmowthelawn Tax depends on the country you're from. If you're from the US then you'll still need to file taxes. Nowadays the schools are required to pay taxes and other withdrawals ("retirement", ss, etc.)

@ThatGuyInCambodia

@@dailylife8901 The same monthly salary at those top schools. The problem is that there are probably about 10 positions in Phnom Penh paying that much for a Kindergarten teacher, so you want to be watching the open positions or apply to schools even if they don't post an open position (call and talk with them) and you could get first in line.
