Yeah, I thought if this vid demonstrated anything, it showed crystal clear the difference between a man and a woman manually handling a bike. Though I'm 5'9 I would NEVER risk an away from bike stance to move it, any error in balance, and I simply would not be able to support or hold the weight with my arms. Even backing up I make sure I'm close. Frustrating for women to see how easy it is for men!

So lesson learned yesterday actually-- I thought that with my bike on the kick stan the tank is angled and you can't get as much gas in. So I a filled it up slowly and got it to the top but this time, I kept the bike upright (by sitting on it) and filled it all the way. It was PERFECT UNTIL. I had to get off the bike to pay the bill. I put the bike on the kick stand and let it angle over and watched all the gas pour all out the tank. So... don't overfill the tank!!!

Octane is basically a knock rating. If you put low octane fuel in a higher compression motor, your motor will knock sooner, and you will get less power out of it. Knock is bad, less power is bad - use the correct fuel.
@ibanez270b

one question, theoretically you can put the higher octane number then normal one... It should be ok, the spark plug will do the job in the right moment, right? the only reason not to do this is the price?

I've been filing up my tank just to the tip. I did realize I could fill it up a little more but I'm lazy, and the extra amount didn't even look like a half gallon. I guess if I'm going on a long trip, I might make this effort to get a little bit more range, but most of the time, I don't care enough to the extra mile (pun intended). I mostly use my bike for commuting, so for me, getting another few miles of range makes little difference.

I didn't hear you comment about keeping the fueling nozzle bonded. You need to make sure the metal tube is in contact with the side of the tank opening. If you leave a gap, the moving fuel builds static which can be enough to ignite the gas fumes.

I've been really digging the videos with Nikki. Tons of useful and helpful info for beginner riders. I don't have a ton of experience riding yet so I've definitely been picking up some good stuff from the vids. That being said, I gotta be honest in saying the more of these videos I watch, the more it sort of feels like watching an over-bearing parent at times. And I only say this because I went through a similar deal with someone who was helping me when I first started riding. The constant non-stop flow of info/critique can get very overwhelming for a new rider and doesnt instill confidence at all. Like in one of the first rides Nikki took on the main road, shes not even comfortable with the controls or basic feel of riding yet and shes getting almost smothered with non-stop lane-positioning instructions, this that, and all kinds of other things. I think it would really help to just let her feel it out a bit and get comfortable with the basics first, before getting into all the advanced nuances of riding. I only say that because I went through the same thing when I started riding and it almost messed me up more than it helped, and I've seen the same thing happen with a few other people. I admire the desire to teach her everything there is to know about riding (especially doing things safely and properly) but sometimes you gotta pump the brakes a little and let her feel it out a bit for herself. The only reason I say that on this video is because I honestly wasn't expecting to see a 14-minute video on filling the tank and moving the bike out of the way - which included twice taking the pump from her as if she's not capable of figuring it out, and then letting her know that you don't want to get gas in your eyes, and you want to put the kickstand down before letting go of the bike. Not trying to give you a hard time or anything because I really dig the videos and helpful advice, but having gone through a similar situation I felt compelled to share my experience and what helped the most - which is, just CHILL a little my brother. That's all - just take it down a notch. I'm telling ya it can make the WORLD of difference for an inexperienced rider and building confidence (which I've now learned how crucial that confidence is). She's a big girl, she knows not to get gas in her eyes, or put down the kickstand before letting go of the bike ;) And keep up the good work - y'all are great.

I was going to point out how he is micro-managing her. That's probably what's causing any issues she's having, if she's actually having any. If he would just back off and let her figure things out, she'd be fine. Bikes aren't that complicated. Kids figure them out with a little practice. I bet she can too.

I’d just use clutch friction, or if i didn’t wanna start it, waddle it over or walk it from the other side of I just had to. 🤷‍♂️

Had a "first" at a pump the other day that I must share: Started filling up, similar to how Dan's showing in this video, then when I thought I should probably let off the handle to check the fuel level, the handle was locked in place by the little metal keeper (which I did not engage intentionally)!! At this point it was too late, the fuel began spilling out since I was full. I pulled the handle out of the bike and aimed it at the ground, pouring gas everywhere, until I could hit the shut off at the pump. Only then did I realize that the little metal keeper that locks the handle was missing the release spring. I informed the attendant and they paid for my fuel. I had to let the bike sit and dry for about 15 min. Once I couldn't see any visible liquid anywhere I headed to the nearest car wash:( Moral of the story: I always double check that the spring is in place and won't accidentally engage. Also, I'm fortunate that I hadn't been riding long enough for it to catch on fire. This is why you never fuel up while on the bike!!

Should have probably shoved it all the way in the tank to engage the full tank shutoff mechanism instead of taking it out. I am a semi driver and have only seen this fail once on a def handle. On my bikes I usually shove it all the way in until it stops then feather it until full, I don't get splash out on my Yamahas harleys or ninja

@@prankmonkeyxs650 Brad, the shut-off valve can, and does malfunction, as you said. I've driven Fuel Tankers for over 20yrs and have seen it happen several times, including on larger nozzles with a similar setup that we use on our Trucks, to fill commercial tanks. The little venturi on the underside of the pump nozzle can get blocked or damaged through people dropping it. If it does fuel wont flow into it and trigger the safety valve. That's also a good reason why you shouldn't drag the hose to the other side of your Car and stick the nozzle in upside down.

After 4 years, if you can fill up quickly without splashing, you are doing it right.

Maybe it’s just San Diego, but my whole area’s gas stations has huge vapor guard boots over the pump handles, and they have to be locked in or they lock out the pump handle and won’t allow you to pump gas, so you either have to do a half speed fill like you advised and blindly wait for it to click out and you’re done filling, or you have to pull the vapor boot back for the safety lockout and only slightly insert it into the tank.

the one thing I like about my Triumph T120 is that it actually does stop the gas flow like when you're filling your car up to about 3/4 the tank, then I just touch up the top. Any other bike I've ridden has generally been much slower to fill.

GOOOOOOD man ! you take the phone awway before fill in! Phone could be seriously dangerous while filling in your tank because of electric static charge and fuel vapors

I grab the round rubber splash protector or the gun while leaning my hand on the tank. That stabilises the gun a lot. I control flow with my other hand with my index finger actually between the gun and trigger. That gives me great control of the trigger position and prevent me from pulling the trigger all the way to maximum flow

Thanks Dan for telling her not to sit on the bike while filling, and why. As both a Motorcyclist and Fuel Tanker driver, over the 21yrs I've delivered Fuel to Service Stations I've lost count of the number of times I've witnessed Riders stradding their machines while filling. I tried explaining to them it was a hazard and why, but most of the time was told to f**k off. So now I don't bother. If they want to set themselves and the Station on fire, I'll simply grab my Phone out of the Cab of my Truck, walk a safe distance away, ring the Fire Service and enjoy the show. There is a way to keep the Bike level while filling, and not sitting on it. Pull up so the Pump is on your right, deploy the sidestand, dismount, move to the right side of the Bike and, grabbing the Throttle grip with the front Brakes applied, pull it upright. The Bike's weight can be taken by the Rider, and if it leans back to the left it will rest on the stand, while keeping hold of the Brakes stops it rolling. Takes some pratice, especially if you aren't tall, but if 1.7m me can do it most averaged sized Riders can. If getting that extra few hundred millilitres of Petrol is all important, give it a go.

One time I filled up my tank, according to me it wasn't to the top. When I got home (just a couple of blocks away) and kicked stand my bike gasoline started to come out from the tank and from a little hose below the tank. It was actually 2 days ago. So, how can I know when to stop?

these little things do play on your mind as a newbie. I know that for me, I did my first few top ups using a jerry can at home as I was worried about 1) slipping on the concrete in the petrol station forecourt, 2) splashing petrol all over my bike and 3) filling up before I needed to and not having the minimum purchase amount.

I fuel up by keeping the hose off the metal in the tank, so it's slightly hovering, this keeps it from splashing back on my bike, especially with uncontrollable pumps. It's all about finding the right angle with those.

What sometimes helps is putting the nozzle in or near the open tank THEN hitting the fuel button. Half the gas pumps I run into are not used to being tilted at that severe of an angle so ,occasionally, gas that was already in the line will splash out before I even hit the trigger as I'm aiming the pump down towards the hole. But, most pumps have paper towels nearby so it's not a big deal to wipe off.
@Vessekx
@Vessekx 5 жыл бұрын
rubberlover666, and tilt it up when you’re done to get whatever is left in the hose. It’s a negligible difference for a car, but for a motorcycle it can be significant amounts of ‘free’ fuel.

Too help prevent a static charge with that plastic tank, it’s best to keep the nozzle firmly against the side or rim. If you float it around there slightly touching can cause a charge. Then that vapor you saw in the video could ignite. In California the vapor recovery system really creates an issue, I wish there was a separate nozzle at the pump for motorcycle/fuel cans and cars.

I have the same bike and there is a little bar in that big hole that stops you from putting it in too far. Also, we were taught in the MSF course to lean the bike on your upper thigh to walk it. Doing what Dan is suggesting looks too cumbersome to what I'm used to, but I am taller and likely stronger than Nikki.
