This is such an important topic and I especially agree with you on the importance of exposure. I am Hispanic and teach in a place were 99% of the population is also Hispanic. My boyfriend, on the other hand, teaches in a city wherein there is more racial diversity. It is amazing just how much exposure to different races and ethnicities can shape our teaching.

I am in awe of your core values! I am truly inspired by your tenacity to build meaningful relationships with your students. Thank you for sharing this video. I teach at a multi cultural school other than my own and this is a reminder for me to get to know my students a little better.

Love love love this! I grew up in a very conservative southern small town. However, I went to a high school where the majority of my peers were Hispanic. I wish more teachers/community members here would learn the lessons in this video and that we should celebrate and include everyone. Thank you for the work that you do!

It's amazing that your topic is so relevant today. I'm happy I came across your channel. I agree exposure is needed by all teachers no matter what your ethnic background. As teachers, we also need to educate ourselves on and about our students and have empathy and not look down on them or anyone when we are in a position of power.

Seriously, Megan, this is incredibly well said. I can't agree more that there is no excuse for exposing oneself to other cultures, especially as we are living in the age of information and technology! While I am a white woman living and working in a predominantly white area, we do have a fair amount of cultural diversity and I come from a culturally mixed family, and I think I take that for granted. I need to be more present and intentional about cultural differences between my students and me, even though those differences may not always be right on the surface - kids (and adults for that matter) are still carrying their history and experience with them and I need to keep that in the front of my mind. Thank you for helping me think and grow!

I just love everything you said here, Megan. I was very blessed to grow up as the "privileged minority" in a third world country, and it has truly shaped and formed how I relate to people from other cultures, and being so aware of my own privilege and how I use it. My husband and I are currently in Malaysia for a week (business for him, holiday for me), and one of my very most favourite things is spending time with old, old friends who were Uni students in Melbourne 30 years ago. I have learned so much about Malaysian culture from them, just from asking humble questions, with a heart to understand. And our friends willingly answer all my curiosities! It is the very best thing about international travel! One question I have had nagging at me is the "why" of muslim women wearing full hijab coverings - there are so many in our hotel. So thanks for the suggestion to seek out those answers....I'm about to go on a KZfaq journey to understand the practice and the motivation behind those practices. ❤️

Thank you for starting this conversation. This summer, I have been researching and reflecting on how to approach teaching white students about privilege without making them defensive. In the past, I have run into the attitude from kids and parents that texts written by diverse authors are only for their own groups. For example, LGBTQIA+ novels are only for LGBTQIA+ students and cisgender/heterosexual students shouldn't have to be "forced" to read those books (a parent complaint I have had to deal with frequently). So that is the major issue I am working on right now: how to engage a predominantly white student population in reading texts that are not about them.

Hi there, love all of your videos! I'm due to start my credentialing program in August. I'm having a hard time choosing between special education and single subject science. I'm doing a career change, I already have my Master's in mental health counseling and wanted to know from your previous video you mentioned the pay scale and the increase for having a master's. Does the Master's have to be in education in order to get the increase? And my other question is what will give me the greater chance of being employable out of special education and single subject Science? My husband is in the military and we will be leaving California in 3 years and I want to ensure I have a good chance of always being able to secure a job
