The DNA of the insides of a domestic dog from its nose to its bum is only 0.2% different from that of a wolf so it is very natural for dogs to pack together and hunt. Dogs will naturally hunt almost anything but one of their most favorite target species is wild pigs. I have been teaching young adults to hunt through the years. Pig hunting teaches team-building skills, endurance, ethics of conservation, and an understanding of balancing biodiversity, in our country NZ where there are no natural predators to control pig numbers where hunters play a vital role in balancing that biodiversity and protecting our native species and flora. Pig hunting is often in a harsh environment that requires a level of fitness and strength. This offers young men a rite of passage to find out about their own prey drive and release that pent-up energy in a healthy way. Today we are taking out Harley, Brodie and Lucus to go hunting in the Golden Down Forestry which is renowned for holding wild pigs that are challenging to catch and often in either thick gorse of blackberry between the pine trees.
