The K5 Plus was touted to be an excellent 3D printer for high temp filaments like ABS. After a review from Makers Muse, Makerpi informed me they had made some improvements and wanted me to do a review. Does the machine live up to both promises? Find out in this unbiased review.
UPDATE: The all metal hot end is not all metal. Instead it has a PTFE liner: imgur.com/a/4bMEID3

I don't understand why they'd want it reviewed at all. Maybe 5 years ago, but better companies have gone under trying to hold that price for such a printer.

After this review, they shouldn't get any new chances, in my opinion; even on new printer models they release later! Normally I wouldn't say this, but when they say they fixed all the issues, when most are clearly not fixed at all, then it should be over and out, PERMANENTLY! No more reviews! They can't expect reviewers, users and/or the community to be their R&D as well as the testers, especially for the massive price they are asking for this printer! It has too many flaws, especially the lid, which seems to be an extremely late afterthought? Seems they put more work and development into the packaging of the printer, than into the printer itself...

Doesn't look like any of the ABS parts split. So, enclosure is doing its job at least. You may have already done this but as I've learnt recently, its beneficial to put down nice thick layer lines on the first layer for ABS. 200% line width for first layer at 15-20mm/s has solved a lot of my bed adhesion issues on my printers when using ABS. Usually laying down on hairspray or a few coats of 50/50 PVA and water. Depending on the brand. Bed temps of 80-110. Usually 100+. Have some Sunlu thats printing nicely on a 90 degree bed. ABS doesn't like a lot of surfaces. Usually needs gluestick, ABS slurry, hairspray or a PVA coat.

I bought a Prusa because every single youtuber and also comment says go prusa if you want a good machine. Well in my opinion it is not really the case. This machine costs me a whooping 750€ plus the MMU2 and i have to tinker on it again and again and again. I still like the machine but would never recommend it over an Ender 3 with a better board. I think the CR-6 SE can be THE new king instead of the Prusa MK3s
@elmariachi5133
@elmariachi5133 4 жыл бұрын
I am not conviced of the Prusa, too. It's always so hyped, but features an completely outdated, flimsy mechanical design. And I think that ABS is a very important material, as it enables printing of actually usefull things instead of just fragile toys. SO the K5 plus is an very interesting printer. In comparison to other (kind of) affordable ABS printers (like flashfogre or up! mini2), it features the usage of arbitrary filament and any slicer of your choice.

My Ender 3 with enclosure prints ABS perfectly. No layer separation or anything. I just have custom ABS G-Code that lets the hot bed run for a few minutes longer once it hits 100c so it warms up the chamber.

I solved that issue of how to completely & quickly remove all protective film from perspex panels 8yrs ago. Find a toddler age 2-3. Sit them on the floor; place the covered perspex panels near them then sternly tell the toddler not to touch. Now leave the room and when you return in 10mins you'll have a pile of brown sticky film and some completely clean panels.

The silk pla is sometimes a little picky when printed with an all metal hotend. Even on my Prusa it does weird squeaky noises on retractions and it sometimes clogs the nozzle. Maybe printed too hot or insufficient hot end cooling. I dont know. Great review!

Good review very complete. You know what be nice is a more concise conclusion like a score sheet. Some 1-5 scores for various features and then the scores can be compared to all other printers. A price score, user interface, print quality, materials, so on. then at the end we get one conclusion a 75 out 105 score. something like that. Keep it up. Best matt.

@Bajicoy
@Bajicoy 4 жыл бұрын
The thing is that printers go out of date and keeping track of scores after every new release is a nightmare. There was once a time part cooling fans were unheard of and having a single fan cool both the heat sink and the part would have been a 5 but now it is a 1. Then there are subjective aesthetics or ergonomics, for the same reason pc hardware or cars don't work well with points, neither do 3D printers

I currently have my Taz 5 running off of a 1500w APC UPS for the first time printing the Millenium Falcon. A 15 hr print is a good test I thought. Currently drawing @ 165-170 watts with 210c nozzle, and 60c bed. Just curious if you've visited this idea. HAVE GREAT DAY and STAY HEALTHY!!

Thank you for your excellent videos. In my opinion 3d printer manufacture should focus more on the build quality and testing their machines than locking up firmware and forking old versions of slicers. Everyone would benefit from preconfigured and regularly updated profiles for vanilla cura or slic3r and proper instructions for importing them.

This ships with an old Cura clone. Is the firmware a marlin clone? I thought marlin derivatives had to be open source per the license. I would love to be able to add mesh bed leveling to this machine. My bed crowns at least .5mm in the middle such that my usable build area is maybe 80mm by 80mm. Leveling module is useless with this kind of crowning. I do have both hot end modules as stated by the company rep below, a full metal hotend, and a PTFE tube hotend I bought from Amazon.

I own one... don't bother unless you want completely replace the extruder assembly. Titan clone is awful, PTFE lined hotend, Temp readings are out because they put the wrong thermistor in the firmware than the ones they shipped with. Ribbon cable has no protection and rubs over screws, jams on rods and gets folded. 12 volts. It can be made into a good machine and does print ABS successfully but just not consistently with that extruder assembly. Look at Qidi's. I own the X-Max and its a solid machine. Old extruder but at least reliable for ABS. Really thick aluminium beds. They're built to last. Any mods you do are to expand them, not repair from factory QC issues or just poor design flaws. Really awesome support from Qidi as well. Reply via email promptly, send parts if theres a problem under warranty.

I've had my Flashforge Creator Pro for around three years and never use anything other than ABS. I've never had any problems with warping, or any other problems I see some people have with ABS. I recently 3D printed all the parts for an MPCNC machine, which took over 100 hours and meant the machine was running day and night for most of the week. Every single print was faultless.These machines cost around 600 USD and the heated bed is around 230mm x 160mm.

we have 2 models of hotend can be choose,one is all metal,which temp can up to 280 degrees,better for ABS,another one is with teflon tube,that's why also sell TPU nozzles on Amazon,to meet more customers' requirements, because some customers like the one with teflon tube,which is more compatible for different quality of filaments,also many customers like all metal hotend,which can print ABS perfectly,the one you used is not all metal hotend.

Do you think being able to preheat the interior air temp of an ABS printer up to maybe 90 C would be useful?
@Bajicoy
@Bajicoy 4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps but this is risky business, if you or anyone plans on using a heat gun, keep in mind the printer frame is plastic and could melt and the frame needs to have extremely good insulation to keep such a high temperature. 90 is really really high for print chambers and causes its own problems. What this machine desperately needs is better leveling and for its print bed to actually reach 100-110. ABS is just really difficult to print and there are so many more stronger plastics than it.
@UncleRice00
@UncleRice00 4 жыл бұрын
@@Bajicoy I was thinking about an adjustable temp with an upper limit of 90C. Yes, the printer would need to be made of higher temps stuff, but this is all part of a custom printer I have in mind.

Another GREAT informative video Michael!! ....but you're far too polite. In this day and age any newly released 3D Printer, in my opinion, has no excuse for being poorly engineered, rushed into production or have some "Features" represented wrong or intentionally misleading especially at the price point of this one. People won't mind paying for quality, cutting corners is unacceptable!!

In my experience you would get less bed adhesion problems and warping on ABS parts by using a nice big brim and some glue stick below the part. I hope the part cooling fan was switched off?
@scottjackson2812
@scottjackson2812 4 жыл бұрын
You need to use a slurry of ABS and acetone. It’s the only foolproof method of adhesion for abs. I use natural abs, which is white and slightly translucent. You don’t need a lot of abs in the acetone. The thinner it is, the flatter and smoother the bottom layer will be.
@Anyone700
@Anyone700 4 жыл бұрын
They have one of those fake buildtac surfaces, the acetone tends to eat right through it. Also, I would expect more from a $750 printer than to need this. The heated bed should just hit the right temps.

Nothing against Angus at makers Muse he's really great when it comes to the slicing software. But I've seen him do some really funky things with hardware. still rubbish printer for the price. I love the idea of an assisted levelling system though. Imagine that but with a permanent Bltouch or other leveler. Can get the bed as close to level as possible but with ease, then the auto levelling can remove any unevenness. what have you tried on ender 5 for the heating chamber? have you thought about a PTC I've seen some saying they get upto 210c. Got a 200w ptc in my photon S massively overkill, heats the chamber up in no time, less than a minute. Not sure what the max temp on that one is, but would be surprised if a high temp ptc didn't get to the ~100c chamber temp needed for abs. Cheap ones seem to be 80c.
