@@SuperLuisLA for example when countering many opponents, while being alone. You will be grip fighting with one, whilst for the others your sides are exposed for attack and your hands at the same time are busy with fighting that one guy. Surely any self-defense at its mastery teaches how not to sleep in any situation and move faster and smarter than your peers, however.

For good level competitors, I think you would be more successful using combination techniques instead of using a single major technique. Using combinations would help keep your opponent off-balanced mentally and physically, and you should see an opening to use “O Soto Gari!” (Combinations are a series of techniques with the last technique being successful!) Ask Coach Cliff about these combinations! Two deception attacks: De-Ashi-Harai, O-Kuri-Ashi-Harai One Major Attack: O-Soto Gari Oh! There are many more combinations then just my suggestion; I was successful using these combinations, locally, nationally, and internationally, etc. Good Luck!

9:12 It's so true, if the guy is bent over at the start of a judo match, that's the cue to start doing some combinations and do a fully committed forward throw. After 2-3 times they are almost certainly going to get hit with a shido. Three shido's is an automatic DQ, so now the opponent starts feeling pressure to start doing attacks of their own, avoid further stalling, avoid stepping out, etc. They also need to start limiting their use of sacrifice throws like drop seoi nage, tomoe nage, etc (which are great attacks, but it becomes risky after getting 1 or 2 shidos because they could be perceived as false attacks) and illegal grips (it's common to use illegal grips in judo but you do get a shido if the referee sees it). And if they're bent over because they're tired, it's time to blast them off their feet. Outside of a judo match, it can be hard to throw a guy who is taking a defensive posture, but once the attacker reaches a certain level of skill and power, the only guys who can defend well from there are guys with a some experience defending throws. And chances are, if they've spent the time to learn how to defend throws, they've also learned enough offense to want to engage you, not just defend. And if not, you can always start working snap downs, the universal way to punish low posture. If it's the gi, your options are even better -- you can go for dominating power grips over the shoulder, going for Georgian grips, etc. Even strong wrestlers might struggle with those grips if they're new to the gi.

Judo guy who loves no gi here. You can sometimes cheese people by pushing (in a more cupping manner as to not essentially be hitting them) on the face or throat/neck for osoto in no gi and it works if you catch them off guard

As a fellow judoka, that far away hopping into the osoto gari, that’s a great way to have a wrestler snag a single leg. Or even give the opponent time to osoto gaeshi (osoto gari counter) I’d go tai otoshi or ashi guruma.

That drive with right hand on the collar grab or lapel is so important. You drive kind of at an angle, but that drive is what makes the unbalance happen, and when you pop you literally are hitting him with all your power pulling on the collar at an angle to establish the unbalance. You just need to be extremely explosive. And then you use that collar grab to drive the opponents head into the ground with all your weight smacking on top. After that the submission is really easy to establish. Great video! Great instruction sensei.

Love it. I feel like judo is underrated cause in mma floor is used but in a fight outside a judo throw onto concrete could kill a man. I wonder if judo is still underused in ufc tho and we will see it grow?? Plus unlike wrestling where you can get kneed to face when shooting in judo seems safe or decent alternative?? Great to see people bringing fight to floor w judo not jumping lol guard

Here is a way I teach outside reap to wrestlers. It is the same as a single leg just your leg and chest are doing what your hands and head do on a single and your penetration step needs to go out at a 45 deg instead of straight in to make room for the leg reaping. The standard reap is serves the same as a ear to chest single, hop hop is the same as turning the corner and the counter reap where you back turn 90deg is just like running the pipe. I hope this helps.

when someone is punching, the leg on the side of the punch has the weight on it. This means the lead leg most of the time because of jabbing. Inexperienced boxers will be front foot heavy the whole time ! So osato gari is highly appropiate on the street.

I've been taught a defence against the osoto gari is to turn the leg they're trying to sweep to the outside(point your knee out to the right if they go for your right leg) and put your weight on that leg. If you're not off balance from your head being tipped back in the setup it works pretty well and you can throw them from there but havn't tried it against any actual judokas.

My sensei always taught me to unbalance the opponent to the point where his left leg (if I'm attacking the right) lifts off the ground and all the weight is on the right leg. This way, when I sweep the leg, he will fly. But it's harder, especially in no gi.

Cool guy even the judo coach makes more sense ON YOUR CHANNEL I like his drive with that osoto ... But if they lean forward why not sag turn throw or last chance winding makikomi? There's a lot of space you could also get a line on a shot or arm drag, or since they are so far back like a high c to a double under slash claw whatever ... Or outside turn throw. I don't know much but that's how I think. But sometimes even though they are leaning their balance is even worse at times so you can osoto gari. A lot of people tai otoshi when they lean, I'm not sure if I would do that but that's what good people do. I would tai o but not there good people do though.

Osoto gari in a street fight would not be a good idea as if it is done properly the opponent's back of head is the first thing that will crash into concrete. Better to walk away than to kill someone. But, if it is war... this would be one of the best to use.
