We just picked up our Team Associated RC10CC (Classic Clear) kit from
@norcalhobbies.
We plan to build and run this buggy. We are kicking off the build with a proper unboxing video of the kit. We are also fortunate enough to have some vintage RC10 kits in our collection including a 2013 RC10 Classic and a ~1984 RC10 (Edinger) kit that we compare this new kit to.
Though the video is long, we had to trim it down quite a bit of content on the vintage kits. If you would like to see more on those kits, let us know in the comments.

Hello - first time on your channel - and what a treat! Takes me back to Dec 1984, when I received as a sponsored driver one of the first RC10s in Australia. It all looked very similar to you '86 version. I was fortunate enough to have Mike Reedy assisting when I came 2nd in '86 Australian titles. There were fun times when the Stealth came out at the '89 worlds here in Oz - rivals trying to take photos etc. Not sold on the whole 'clear' idea - it looks horrendously fragile to me. Cheers from a long retired ex-Factory Team racer. (Still have all the t-Shirts though...)

It's supposed to be fragile. AE uses clear plastic prototype parts for stress testing. I've seen the clear prototype B5M. I don't think people understand this about the kit. That's why they say it's not supposed to be ran.

funny I have a '88 ish Cadillac and don't recall any sharp or nasty edges on the gold chassis. It seems to be a high quality stamping and burr free. Guess they really don't make em like they used to. My original still runs and is awesome in every way from when I bought it in '88. Love it. AE could make a fortune with these things if they'd just build em proper and with the original appearance. Missing a lot of sales I think and no parts? thats just stupid. The original nylon is tuff as nails and I don't believe I've ever managed to break a nylon piece on this kit. It's all original and I used to race it in modified dirt ovals back in the early 90's. It was raced and driven hard and manage to survive it all. I recently rebuilt it with new electronics but the running gear is all late 80's original. Amazing kit that will never be repeated. cheers.

When Associated originally listed the kit on their site it was listed at $319, same price as AMain. But, when they started fulfilling orders, they increased the price to $399, while the hobby stores that managed to get an allotment sold them for the original $319 price (save for the few who listed them on eBay).

Very cool stuff, Brice. Seems imperfections are pretty much all over the place with this kit, but let's face it, the coolness factor offsets all of them, lol! Catch ya on the next one!

Cool first peek into the kit! I hope the scraped body problem is not going to be a common one, I plan on leaving mine clear and scratches all over is not cool! Fingers crossed my order gets filled first I guess, then I can worry about the scratches! LOL!

Thanks for posting, that's a great comparison. After seeing that I am now even more hopeful that Team Associated do another re-release of the RC10 as per the 2013 model that you have (and they make it here to Australia).

Great video, its nice to it along side the other kits. I was all excited for this kit, was due in the UK just before xmas, its now been pushed back 5 weeks and thats taken away a lot of the excitment, i guess the plastic flaws cant be helped ? But the body damage aint good. I can see them having to replace a few of these. I was going to leave the body clear and the imperfections like you say will be visable.

Cool. Mine shipped today from A-main and should be here Monday. Also ordered one from Tower. Not shipped yet, I learned the hard way, if you want a re-release then, pre-order. Truly sad that the companies are putting these out in limited numbers. They dont make more when they go up. The re-sellers do.

I had 2 of these kits arrive directly from Associated. Both kits had the original clear seals cut and a chrome factory seal was placed over it. I contacted Associated and their response by email is that they randomly open boxes to check the contents and packaging and reseal them. I find this a bit odd

If you pre-ordered, that price should be honored. Build video in the works. It’s my first time building an RC10 from a NIB kit. I’m having a blast with the build.

Interestingly mine arrived in Japan today and it’s not packed like yours was so the chassis couldn’t scratch the shell.

Did you take photos of how it was packaged? I am curious if they have changed ow they pack the kit? To be honest they have been packing the kit like this for the last 40 years. I think what is different is 1. the edges on the chassis are sharper. 2. If you pack the kit with parts bags inside the body, it helps space the body from the chassis. I have about half a dozen NIB AE kits and this is the only one that has a severely scratched body.

I have one of these. I'll take a sprue in to work and test it on the Instron against a piece from an old car that is made from the original plastic material... stay tuned. I don't think this stuff is anywhere near as resilient as the original nylon, but it looks cool.

For the price of the kit, they should replace it. I like long antenna tubes for that classic look

Very good point on the antenna tube. I was sort of thinking that in the back of my head as I was going through the video. I do cut my antenna tubes and tend to use them up because the get mangled in crashes.

When first announced around Halloween they were going for $319 on preordered. They saw the demand and decided to raise prices by about 25 percent a month later. This is highway robbery. No ball bearings. And they get $400 for this shelf queen?

AE sells at a higher price because they want you to buy from your LHS .

That kind of makes sense, but at the same time, AE could have just had it listed on their site for MSRP. The problem is that the hobby shops are also raising their prices to 399.99, which is where this argument falls apart. I am curious if the hobby shops costs went up proportionally to the increase in retail…

The fact these don't have any parts support is the main reason I decided NOT to buy this kit. Sure I wasn't planning on running it very hard, but I did want to buy a few additional replacement parts to keep with it. Buying 2 kits just to use one for parts is not the direction I wanted to go, so instead of selling a few extra parts, they lost an entire sale. Regardless, these will sell out, so it's not like my purchase actually mattered anyway.

I kind of feel like they have done a couple of things with this release that have off-put people. I also think that it's a different customer base than their dominant racing customers. I picked up my kit from the hobby shop that had multiple race tracks and was full of racers. Not a single comment on the kit as I walked out. The vintage market is probably just not that big, so there is not a lot of buying power.

@@jack-o-trades Imagine if they re-released the vintage kit, but with full parts support again. Suddenly vintage racing and such would happen way more commonly. If they wanted to, they could boost their own market into existence. They don't seem to want to do that though. If you could get parts for the older kits readily, then people would be more likely to buy them knowing they wouldn't JUST sit on a shelf. Not everyone justifies something they can't even really use.

Theres a bunch of clear prototype AE cars and parts. It's for factory testing and generally the public never gets to see them. I think this kit is actually really cool. It's never supposed to be driven.

@@UnrivaledPiercer I don’t believe that would happen. They tried in 2013 and kits were slow movers. The hobby has shifted to carpet racing.

Everyone ralks about how great tamiya instructions and packaging is. Associated only contains the parts you need for that step. Tamiya needs to learn from Associated packaging

Yeah I was thinking clear anodize but actually the manual says that it’s silver anodize which is kind of cool. Raw aluminum would never do. With stuff that me and my team design we would never leave raw aluminum it should always be plated.

It looks like Horizon does not own AE. They do own Proline though which might be why we don’t see Proline tires in the 2023 kit vs the 2013 kit. I wonder if AE ran into production issues that drove their costs up and forced them to raise the price by more than 25%. Or if their sales went through the roof enticing them to meet the demand by raising prices.
