Ironically Minecraft was a MOD of an original concept called infinitemine in which the creator was inspired by Tf2 and a hand full of other popular games at the time unfortunately the creator lost interest in the project and it was essentially abandoned. Then the legend himself Notch picked up where Zach left off and the rest is history. Basically the original Minecraft was envisioned as tf2 with building elements, basically fortnite done right. Just to note Zach went on to create his own indie studio "Zachtronics" where he creates some really good puzzle-based games, I highly recommend them!
