Team GB's quartet of Edward Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Steven Burke and Peter Kennaugh set a new world record of 3:51.659 in the Velodrome for the men's cycling team pursuit event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3 August 2012).
Cycling is among the rare sports that have always featured on the Olympic programme. Road cycling, however, was not on the programme of the Paris 1900, St Louis 1904 or London 1908 Games, while track cycling wasn't in the programme of the Stockholm 1912 Games.
The first road event in Olympic history took place in 1896 on the marathon route at the first Games of the modern era in Athens. The race started in Athens, headed towards Marathon, then returned to Athens, at the Phaliron velodrome.
Olympic cycling was added to the women's programme in Los Angeles in 1984, with an individual road event.

+Star Sloth Five things that help I think: 1. Lack of brakes. No random, unforeseen changes in speed (i.e. from braking in a panic). 2. Single speed. No dead period when changing gears 3. Fixed drivetrain. No coasting to slow down abruptly, must always pedal. 4. It's team pursuit, so should never overlap with competitors. 5. The nice, even surface of the velodrome.
@greg55666
@greg55666 8 жыл бұрын
+Star Sloth That's not nearly as hard as it might look like it would be. The relative speed is what matters. The gears on these bikes are so massive, if one of them suddenly stomped on the pedals he would only accelerate slowly. Keeping the same pace as the bike in front of you is not something you even have to think about. (Think about the peloton in racing, where 200 cyclists are going the same speed bunched together way closer than this without crashing (usually :) ).

For anyone who's wondering why the first cyclist goes to the back of the line, there's drafting/slipstreaming that makes it easier to pedal for the back of the line. So the first cyclist spends the most power, and they're taking turns on the first one

+neva l The lead riders have it the hardest, they are "pulling" the rest of their team due to them taking the full force of wind resistance. Everyone in the back has less resistance, sometimes up to ~40%, from riding in the forward rider's wake. They swap off leaders to give them a rest and the next person in line "pulls" the rest.

+jayesh soni That part is just training. Im sure you can jog behind someone slower than you. With enough training they do it with bikes. Plus, that is why when they get tired they just swerve off. That way they decrease the chance of someone running into them when they go slower.

okay first time I've ever seen this sport and here is what I have gathered, to start you need 4 people they switch leader because of energy; wind resistance etc. 3 people are only required to cross the finish line. they drop the 4th (slowest) rider if necessary.

I'm American and have never seen this before. Though I'm certainly not a rider, I know enough about cycling to know that wind resistance is definitely a thing, even inside a building. The only thing I was 'confused' about was the goal of the race. I had to come to the comment section (or I could have googled it) to figure out it was first team to have 3 riders hit 4km. Going purely by the title ("pursuit" in particular) with no knowledge of the sport, I was thinking partway through that the winning condition was having one team's lead racer lap the other team's lead racer. In other words, I thought it was a vs. match, when it was actually a time trial. Still interesting.

+Campbell Gildersleeve for lots of reasons no, you would need a track specific bike
@Polioooo0
@Polioooo0 8 жыл бұрын
+Campbell Gildersleeve It depends on the type of fixed gear bike you have. Does it have track geometry? Especially the raised bottom bracket? Most velodromes do not allow brakes due to safety reasons. Also you normally should not need shorter cranks on the velodrome, velodrome rules are different for each velodrome. Some velodromes may have steeper banks than others. There are people who ride custom 190mm cranks that do just fine on the velodrome tracks. Best bet is to call your local velodrome and ask as much questions needed. Even better if you still don't know if your bike is track legal, take your bike there and ask the staff. Happy riding

Can someone explain the sport I'm confused on what the point is !?
@nitfitnit
@nitfitnit 8 жыл бұрын
It's basically a team time trial. Each team starts with 4 riders on opposite sides of the track. The time is measured until the 3rd rider finishes. Winner is the team that covers the distance (4000m) in the least amount of time, or if one team catches up to the other at any point in the race then they win.

@nitfitnit

The guy in front has to work much harder than the rest to break the wind, the others draft off of him, so they take turns at the front to spread the work. In some cases the strongest rider on the team takes longer turns at the front.

the one in front uses more energy than those behind him, that's why they all switch positions.

Its one of the oldest cycling sports. The first bike races were held on tracks. Also, the outfit is intentionally tight, to cut down on wind resistance.

It's called a dead pull, basically the guy who drops off is meant to ride at full speed just before the finish as only the first 3 to cross the line are required.
@TomTheSaintsGuy
@TomTheSaintsGuy 7 жыл бұрын
The time of each team is taken when the 3rd rider's back wheel crosses the finish, which is why the riders bunch up at the end. Because only 3 riders are needed to finish, but 4 are needed to start, usually the rider that is the most exhausted is the one which peels off. Also, the rider at the front has more work to do because he's facing the most air resistance as his teammates draft behind him (which is why they take turns in front).

Only three riders need to cross the finish line and the time is taken from the last rider of that three to cross the line. GB managed to go on with four riders for longer meaning the work was shared between more people making the gap between them and Australia even bigger
