Stephen well if you go south of Africa you'll probably find some. They like to cluster in one area and dominate, pretty much like ethnic minorities in your very own western counties...except they don't harshly take over your area and force you out of your home's and run the government like what you did south Africa....so.

part of the reason we have stone walls is because the ground can be very stony, the stones were dug up to make the land easier to farm and it made sense to use the stones as building material

Stone walls are also found in parts of Croatia called the Karst region, or anywhere there is a limestone bedrock affected by glacial action resulting in a large number of stones. These make tillage difficult and are moved to to make walls partly for shelter but also to make hand tilling on a small subsistence scale easier to do.

I fail to see the equation [not made by Cheadle or O'Brien by the way] but by the commentators here that having a small ethnic population = a racist place. The low ethnicity in Ireland is down to historic migration not racism. The majority of black people who came to the UK came on invitation in the 1950s due to the UK having near full employment. Northern Ireland didn't have full employment so few, if indeed any of the migrants settled there. As a result, those who followed in the 1960s didn't go there either because there was no black community in place. In the 70s-90s the reasons for not settling in Northern Ireland were obvious. Some have come her in the 21st century but Northern Ireland, while by and large a very nice place to live, remains the most economically slowest of the UK's 12 regions. Add to that a relatively summerless climate [compared to England, Wales and south east Scotland] and there is little to attract ethnic minorities here against other more attractive places in the UK where a population of their ethnicity already exists. Even the Eastern European population is now heading into a recently steep decline. In Eire the economy was on the ropes in the 50s and 60s and the main problem it had was retaining the natives from emigrating to Britain, USA, Canada and Australia. Again it's only really since the 90s and the celtic tiger that Eire has held appeal for people from outside Ireland to live. Today Eire's overwhelmingly largest foreign population remains British [born in Britain and moving to Ireland as opposed to being Irish with British national identity]

Isn't it unusual that an ethnically caucasian country would have a mostly caucasian population? I've never been to China, but it would seem odd to me to see more Chinese people there than black people. I expect India to be mostly black as well. Because if a country isn't at least 50% non-natives that's unusual and probably racist.

Well, Ireland really, only, ever communicated with the United Kingdom up until the 60's, because they used to own us... With not a lot of modernization and the Catholic Church ruling us until the 80's we were an extremely secluded society. And so, not many people, of any race, besides Whites lived in Ireland. Even now, we're a pebble compared to other EU countries; if people wanted to migrate to other countries they certainly wouldn't choose here. In my secondary/high school there was only 20 black people.

Of course, values wise I tend to agree more with city people but I am definitely more of a down to earth, slow and steady wins the race kind of person. 738polarbear Where are you getting these facts? If any English 'town' has more Italians then it is London and only London, simply because of it's size, but Glasgow is renowned for it's Italian boroughs and heritage. The Ice-Cream wars happened in Glasgow, not Bristol, Glasgow has a 'Little Italy', Hull doesn't. Tom Conti, Paulo Nutini, Daniella Nardini, Armando Iannuci, Sharleen Spiteri, Peter Capaldi, Nicola Benedetti, Ronni Ancona, Dario Franchitti, Lou Macari, Dominic Matteo, Ricky Sbragia, Lena Zavaroni. Need I continue? Penguins in Antarctica know Glasgow's connection with Italy.

"Not many Blacks...". Mamma Mia, how things can change in an astonishing brief period! About 20% of the Irish population now comprises people born outside Ireland. People with African ancestry/born on the African continent now feature in every aspect of Irish life, the arts, music, sports, TV, even a few becoming fluent in the Irish language and their children attending Gaelscoileanna (i.e.., schools where all.most of the teaching is in Irish).

Gy Bx uhm.. fun fact: YES. Just a few hundred years ago.. During the days of the Empire.. White people were EVERYWHERE! In teeming thousands! Nigeria, India, China, Mauritius, other African countries, you name it! But now that they have sucked these countries dry, they are happy to be back in their homelands, poshly pleased, sipping tea and complaining about all these ‘bloody immigrants’ without any sense of irony.

Spot on. I am actually from Ireland and Don is completely right there are very little black people here at all. Every one I know who is black I've met at university in England. But what I mean is usually black celebrities (eg: Jamie Foxx/ 50cent) are a lot more expressive and outgoing people. It has nothing to do with "being polite", I just mean they have a lot more pizzazz in their personality.

Don't really understand the American reasoning behing this criticism of Ireland (You see it frequently on reddit and places like that). It's meant to make out like we're backwards and not diverse or something. The truth is that the majority of black people in America are there because their ancestors were slaves. That's hardly something to boast about. I'm very glad that Ireland doesn't have the import of African slaves as a part of its history.

For a lot of white people, it's a new experience to be the minority when they travel to another country that isn't white so yeah, it's not uncommon for white people to talk about that afterward.

@@cephalonrolli5678 Naw, I think he was expressing what I just did, but he did it with fewer words. It's a thing. I am a "minority" where I am (Asian Canadian), but moving the deep south meant a whole other level of minority. You can expect the demographics ahead of time, but you really FEEL it when you're there and remember it afterwards. It's not about not knowing what it's going to be like. It's not even a bad thing. It's just how you feel about the experience.
