Here's a NEVER before seen Dunk Off of Michael Jordan and some campers and coaches from UAB in 1989. Pretty dope stuff and a rare 360 for MJ and obviously the dope Free Throw Line Dunks!
Big thanks to Scott Perry for this dope footage!

I love that he always dribbles into his free throw line dunks. Way more impressive than a lot of the guys since that just carry the ball at a full sprint. Mike is at dribbling speed, which really makes the athleticism required that much higher. Combine that with the subtle grace and technique that he displays, and it really was an artform for him. Nobody's dunks look as amazing in slow motion.

Well said. Just an incredible physique too. He had the leanest, most defined yet elastic body I ever saw. Like I tell people, that man was created by God to be what he became. God does this so we will honor him, yet too often we miss that. God put his stamp on MJ by the graceful movements. Sure, hard work can make one jump higher. But to make it look that artistic? Nah, that is a Divine gift.

It was free so the arena was packed. Counting standees it was close to 10K in an 8500 seat UAB arena. Along with Jordan was Derrick McKey (tallest guy) who played at Alabama followed by a long NBA career (most notably with Seattle)...white guy is Jim Farmer, who also played at Alabama and bounced around NBA and overseas...third guy I am not sure, but I think it is a former UAB player. I was there that night. If I remember correctly he was doing a promotional tour and was at 'Just For Feet'. The other players were top high school players from Alabama. He also did a 3 point contest in which he nailed most of them using his left hand.

For athleticism, lots of athletic players today, almost every dunker could do it from the ft line so not so sure about if MJ could dominate that much today. Shooting wise? Everyone could shoot nowadays. System? Most teams today has good system unlike in the 80s. So remove your nostalgia goggles man reality is basketball like everything else doesn't evolve backwards.

I have been watching Jordan my entire life and I think the 5:19 mark at this video puts all to bed that his vertical leap was increased with his legend. I even started to believe until I saw this video. I always wondered how high he could get with full rest not like in a game or contest just showing off kind of. This isn’t a low angle this was recorded from above in a nosebleed seat so that puts to bed the fans that keep claiming low angle. Also when he finishes these dunks his head is still near the rim which makes it impossible that he wouldn’t be over the rim because on a free throw line dunk you will be at apex around the dotted line not at the finish. He clearly jumped over 48 inches here with the run up.
@SuperDukes18
@SuperDukes18 3 жыл бұрын
that's a 1-foot take off with a run-up. Vertical leap is measured with a standing 2-foot jump. Different biomechanics. Not saying I disagree or agree with whatever the claims are, just that this doesn't support any such claims in any way. Just very athletic and impressive.
@mumf30
@mumf30 3 жыл бұрын
Respect for your comment as well. NBA has changed the rules a bit. Some Teams allow a 15 foot approach during the Vertical Jump Test so your allowed to use 1-Foot. I agree his standing Vertical would be much less than running with 1-foot. I believe NFL is still using the two-foot standing Vertical Test you mentioned. It really should be changed in my opinion for all sports. Most of these sports your allowed to run so why not test your Max Vertical while running. All athletes whether 1 foot or 2 foot jumpers will get higher Max Verticals when running because it is derived from momentum. Still respect the comment. However my claim never limited MJ to a standing Vertical. My comment said with the “Run Up”

High angle from behind the object (basket in this case) is the same as low nagle from the other side if you dont belive me, take 2 objects and manipulate them in front of your phone camera...so no, his head isn't at the rim, but still a good jump;)
