Tearing down a somewhat awful Chinese USB charger. This failed on several grounds. First and foremost the thing keeps cutting out. Second it's not easy to read the tiny text and third the plug is not compliant with current electrical codes. The wiring is also non-compliant.

I believe I can see what the problem is from your closeup video, there appears to be a dry joint on one of the mains inputs on the PCB, the one that has the fuse connected to it.

In hindsight, if I’d checked the solder joints rather than like looking for other failures it’d have helped. Having said that, the way I cut the case open meant it could not be used safely.

No, one connector is not supposed to be wider than the other one. There is no chance, a metal part of the device would become hot no matter which direction its plugged in

Definitely a dry joint on the hot side causing the issue. I'd go over all those solder bath joints.

Already at the dump now. Probably best because the case had to be cut open. I’m not a fan of duct taping mains powered devices and it’s safer as it belonged to my mistress who is a bit clumsy; I would not like her to have a shocking experience.

That blue capacitor between the mains and low voltage sides does not look to be a safety capacitor (should be Class Y1), so this thing has already failed on safety grounds. This looks like the thing that DiodeGoneWild should do a complete teardown of, to see if it is safe or not. Chances are that transformer would also be a bit suspicious.

I didn't like the look of the transformer which is one reason why I dumped it in the trash.

Send this to DiodeGoneWild and he will do autopsy for transformer and we see is this just dodgy or super dodgy (with skull) charger. It looks like this have right Y capacitor and separation distance on pcb looks enough. So it's tranformer build guality if this is dangerouss Usually those switching chips run more hot than transformer so they do overtemp protection. So if transformer is ok then this is just under delivering but not lethal. Edit: this looks better what DGW has done autopsies. He usually get stuff from viewers or ebay/ali

Already at the dump, I think. I would have sent it to Big Clive - he pulls stuff apart and orders dodgy, dangerous products from eBay, Aliexpress and Temu for the fun of it.

Chinese USB power supply is a crap, what a shocker. Also 5amps PSU with such small transformer is not posible in this universe. Please, send this amazing piece of chinese technology to Diode Gone Wild for his 10000 dangerous usb chargers video!

Already tossed the thing in the trash. If Diode Gone Wild was nearby then I've a few other bits of junk that have not made it into the trash yet.

Do NOT use those to charge your tablets or phones.... unless if course you want them to get damaged. These are fine for charging things like batteries or flashlights but nothing with sensitive electronics. I use these only for powering usb lights and that's it.
@britishtechguru
@britishtechguru 2 ай бұрын
They're fine for most phones. Any phone that doesn't have over-voltage and reverse polarity protection is a poor design and probably worse than even a Chinese burner phone. Anybody that spends more than the minimum on a phone is in a way different income bracket than most KZfaq viewers, given that they only last as long as the charging socket which isn't more than about a year.
