I´m loving how they´re sewing the personal/history expansion bits with characters motivations. One can almost see the gears changing in Joel´s head while Ellie is reading the letter, even before it mentions Tess... and when it does they´re sure to show that the punch really landed. That could only be achieved if we understand the weight of the words written there. Such a powerful moment. If last week we had the worse kiss in TV history ever, yesterday we might´ve had one of the most beautiful ever.

@@Sawyer1982OAC That is what some people don't seem to connect if they consider this a "filler" episode, while actually it might be one of the most important ones yet... considering this journey is less about them traveling, but more about the characters Joel and Ellie, and their character development/progression... And this has been a major milestone, planting that seet in Joels head what he has to do... Without that story of Bill and Frank played out in front of our eyes like it did, that letter and it's impact wouldn't have the same gravity. It hasn't just been beautifully told, it has been necessary! Also, those missing Bill and Ellie meeting each other and the entertainment it certainly would have provided, and going after a car battery and such, and to go to the school, getting more infected action and all that... THAT would have been a "filler" episode, it might have been a fun ride, but it would have been meaningless to the overall story/plot. So, while I have been surprised about the turn they took with this... It has absolutely been a pleasent surprise to me and I applause them for doing that.

To those don't get the overarching message: Bill and Frank was an example of 'best-case-scenario-as-good-as-it-will-probably-get' in this apocalyptic universe. You survive. You maybe find the love of your life. You die on your own terms. Shit, we're lucky if we get these feels in our current lives. This is why we're all so emotional. We might not get this ourselves.
@electricmang0

Beautifully put! On top of that too, put the whole story of Bill and Frank's love in context with Joel being read Bill's letter talking about hating the world but then finding someone worth saving and protecting. The letter said "to keep Tess safe"... but he essentially failed in that, on top of losing his daughter 2 decades ago. Now he has Ellie, and he needs to keep her safe. Over all those years, Joel knew Bill would do anything to keep Frank safe, and he did; and that letter was something he definitely needed to hear/read so that he could properly be there to keep Ellie safe moving forward.

This is one of the most beautiful and emotionally powerful episodes of tv I’ve ever seen. The whole episode looked and felt like a movie that I guarantee would be on every critic’s shortlist for best picture at the Oscars. Neil Druckman said in the BTS video after the episode that he and Craig Mazin had this philosophy on the show was “when should we deviate and when should we come back, if it’s kinda the same or worse then they stay (completely faithful to the game), if it’s better we deviate”. I’m SO DAMN HAPPY THEY DEVIATED! I cried like once every 15 minutes this episode. And I’m so happy that it ended with them dying together instead of Bill just forever living alone like in the game. Tragically today Annie Wershing who played Tess in the game passed away at 45 due to cancer. So when they showed the flashback with Tess and Joel I cried. Rest In Peace Annie Wershing.❤❤

I played and beat the game. I do not like episode 3. It was so forced. They made an hour and a half episode about 2 men in a relationship, because they knew morons would eat it up due to the whole gay aspect. No I do not hate gay people, but I don't want to be tricked into watching 'Brokeback Mountain' when I sat down to see a post apocalyptic zombie movie. They killed off Bill and Frank which shows their unimportant to the main story and that this episode was simply Agenda driven. Very great game. I liked episode 1 and 2 but will stop watching if I see anymore crap like this going foward. They should've made this a separate movie. No, because the straight audience won't watch, so shove it down our throats, while the agenda hides itself in a zombie show. This is wrong. If this was a straight couple, then everyone would hate it because they would realize that episode 3 hardly progresses the story. Even if it was a straight couple it would still be bad. Yall just think it's adorable because it's gay. Smh

Although Bill and Frank do not interact with Joel and Ellie in the episode, they brought them together through symbolism and points in common in their relationship, in that way this doesn't feel like filler and we don't miss the main characters, that's a very hard thing to do, tell something that in a sense has nothing to do with the main story and still contributes to this. I don't know if they changed a lot from what's in the game, because i don't know all the details, but this was very good

Straight-up one of my first thoughts after finishing that episode was "man reactors are going to have it ROUGH". Well done ep, lots of changes but ultimately completes the same goal: Originally Bill is framed as an example for Joel of what he can become, an uncaring jaded loner losing his mind, showing what could happen he continues to be an emotional brick wall. In the show however, he is the opposite & shows what can be accomplished IF Joel is able to let people in. Same purpose, different jigsaw pieces.

In 2003 episode 1, Joel, Sarah and Tommy didn't eat pancakes for breakfast, they refused the neighbors' cookies, and most importantly, Joel forgot to buy a cake for his birthday. It saved their lives except for Sarah.

@Late to the Party, 17:21 Craig Mazin didn't exactly say what was wrong with Frank but he did say that he's suffering from either MS or ALS ='( Frank was so alive, ready to do anything, everything. His disease took the wind out of his sails and he can't live like that. His disease makes me think of the Bill's home before Frank. Bill can live with the bear essentials, he doesn't care about having more than he needs, and this explains his first with Frank three years after living together--we already saw Frank noticing the dust on furniture ding lunch. Bill doesn't need to just survive; he wants to live. And in his mind, living with MS or ALS isn't living. I hated what Frank did to Bill, but I get it. I probably couldn't live like that either, not in their world anyway. His condition, likely would have put both him and Bill at risk at some point, and surely he didn't want his condition to be the death of Bill. I was initially surprised that Bill honored his wishes, but all made since when dinner was over--way better than the game's story. If Bill didn't kill himself too, he still could have been the guy we had in the game, and that's what I thought was going to happen, but then he gulped his wine too, and it was clear what he had done. Anyway, another great story. Three stories in and they keep getting better. Nothing else coming out this year is going to beat this writing. Give them their Emmys now.

That made sense. His proximity traps had them held back so that he could distance kill those who escaped. The fence in front of him was the last line of defense, the raiders didn’t make it to the main fence, that’s how Bill and Frank survived. Add to that, they had resources from Joel and Tess that helped them fortify. Joel told Bill that his current defenses wouldn’t last without the resources they had to offer.

My biggest criticisms are that they laid the romance on a little too thick and fundamentally changed Bill’s character. It felt somewhat out of place for The Last Of Us especially considering Joel and Tess, two main characters who were together for ten years, got zero relationship development and never showed an ounce of affection. Still I would have kept the episode the way it was with one major change: Frank doesn’t tell Bill he’s going to take himself out. They spend one more good day together but it’s just a normal day. Maybe he still requests the special dinner and Bill suspects something deep down but shrugs it off and doesn’t say anything. Then Frank does it while Bill is asleep. Bill is devastated but continues on becoming much more cynical and grouchy. He’s a survivor. He survives. Then Joel and Ellie come to town and it proceeds similar to the game with Bill leading them through the school to get the battery. I think this would have achieved the same effect of the episode while also preserving the story and character from the game (fan service).

@@DoctorSess right but i agree with the writers, there's is no need for Joel Ellie and Bill to meet cuz it doesn't add to the story anymore. Bill's character has already done his job, in fact, a way better job than he did in the game. the three of them fighting the zombies to get some car parts is more fun in the game than in a show. (*game's ending spoiler*) this love and relationship kind of build a foundation for Joel's decision to save Ellie at the end.

God I loved this episode so much. I had never played the game but understood that the flashbacks were added materiel. This was so unexpected and so amazing. The acting was incredible (never seen Parks & Rec so this was my introduction to Nick Offerman! Murray Bartlett too for that matter.) The writing, pacing and music were on point all the way through. I never expected to cry while watching a TV adaptation of a horror/action video game. They got me good. Rumor has it there is a longer version of this episode. I would love to see it.

So much happened in this episode that it's too much for me to comment on without at least three paragraphs so I'll just mention three things. One the bedroom scene caught me by surprise cause I wasn't sure how much they were going to go with it. Two the passage of time with Bill and Frank through the years together getting older and not able to do things as easily started the process of sadness towards the end. Three think that Frank might have had either a brain tumor or something that was maybe causing a mobility issue is what I thought when he mentioned an MRI. That real life stuff is what almost got me cause that going through life and getting old with someone is the best thing you can find, but can be sad because you miss the things that you aren't able to enjoy with that person do to getting older. That hurt more than the end of their journey and that window at the end almost got me too. I hope there are Emmy nominations for their performance in this episode. Enjoyed the episode and the reaction. Can't wait for the next one and your response to it. 👍👍✌out.

I've seen people calling it tragic or sad, but I think it was more happy than sad/tragic. They got to pass in old age, after a long life where they were loved, with agency and dignity. This is something neither queer nor disabled, characters are usually granted in media. The apocalypse happened in 2003. That is the societal framework they are coming from. One where gay marriage wasn't legal. One where initial meetings were often conducted through coding because being too open, too out, was dangerous. Especially in a small town. Bill probably had more genuine social interaction after the outbreak than beforehand. Because of small town stigma and pre 2003 socially acceptable homophobia. From this perspective the apocalypse gave them a chance at life they may not have gotten otherwise. Bill likely never would have known love. And Bill and Joel became friends. Even if they didn't want to call it that. Joel had the codes. The show story is exploring how love and relationships can be toxic. And this was a beautiful juxtaposition to that. I know it is different from the game, but I don't think it took anything away from the game. You still got to meet Bill - just Bill ending in a better place than game Bill. [In the game their relationship didn't end well, Bill is still alive but Frank has committed suicide and you find the body]. Joel and Ellie still got resources. And it was changed in a way to enhance the story. And game players get to experience something new. In the context of queer representation in media, including the "kill your gays" trope, I really appreciated this change. And the lack of bodies was really respectful of the story being told - it wasn't a story about their death. It was a story about their life and love.

This episode destroyed me - they made it so much better and so much sweeter than the game, which, in turn, also made it so much *worse* in that it hit soooo hard and was so painful lmfaooo. I was an absolute wreck. So beautiful to see a sort of "opposite" to game Bill... game Bill was almost like a warning to Joel about what kind of person you become when you close yourself off to other people, but show Bill serves as inspiration for Joel, to show him how wonderful life can be when you open yourself up to love. ....aaaand I'm crying again. Thanks you two for another insanely quick reaction!!
@LatetotheParty
@LatetotheParty Жыл бұрын
Love your analysis of game Bill vs show Bill and their affect on Joel! Inspiration is so much more powerful than fear. As much as we love the gameplay during Bill's moments in the game, this showed us a whole new aspect of an apocalypse. The love that flourishes. It will not last forever, but it's ok as long as you cherished the love while you had it.

Like you guys, I cried a lot in this episode because my mom has multiple demyelinating sclerosis and she tried to commit suicide twice, she is fine now and is contained but it was very hard for me but it must be more difficult for people who suffer from these disabling diseases which don't have cure and only they understand what it feels like to gradually lose their mobility and things that they could do before and no longer do, and in some cases gradually lose their cognitive functions when you have Alzheimer's or the beginning of it. Also understand that it is a personal decision, even though it hurts a lot, if the person decides to take their own life feeling that they lived a full life and the disease is taking away their identity. Something that happens in life and you don't hear much, I'm happy that they covered it on premium television.
