80’s Classic!!! This is the music I grew up listening to. I love everything about the 80’s and Tears for Fears was very present during my childhood years. Besides being a great band, their sound and their style is very unique. This song has such an amazing and powerful groove that I always wanted to play. I had a lot of fun making this cover and I was quite pleased the way it turned out. Enjoy it!!!

Your obviously a very good drummer, but it's the offbeat hi hat groove that makes the drumming in this song so good (and difficult) don't know why you didn't do it.

Love how you compensated for the missing shaker. Not too many bands have a dedicated shaker guy. I'm an older drummer with arthritis, so I struggle to play it like Leandro. I play light ghost notes on the snare to compensate. The guys in my band think my version sounds exactly like the original. Their hearing must be bad.

It sounds more like a shuffle when the hi hat is played on the off. I liked the feel when you mixed up the hi-hat fills because the 2 & 4 was so solid! You could build a house on that 2, 4 Nice work

This song has a polyrhythmic hi hat pattern. That's one of the main things that makes the groove so unique. The hats follow the shaker loop that's going on and makes the song swing totally differently than a regular 12/8 shuffle. Aside from that, your playing and pocket is spot on. You're a great drummer.

Nice variation, but what is missing is Manny's unique and ground breaking syncopated every-other 16th note hat rhythm, a fanaistic grove that has never been duplicated.

+wthwind I'm afraid you're wrong too. Let's break it down: 1. The song is in triplet 4/4, which is the same as saying 6/8. 2. The original drummer played 4 hits per bar of 6/8, but they were still evenly spaced. Let's assume we don't know how dotted note ratios work, so let's do the math instead: 4 notes fit evenly in 6/8, but 6 isn't divisible by 4. 6/8 can also be written as 12/16, where 12 IS divisible by 4, which gives us 3. This means that every note has to last 3/16th of a measure, which is exactly a dotted 1/8th note is. Dotted notes are basically 50% longer than the note's base form, so a dotted 1/8th is 1.5/8 which is 3/16. In some places, but always on a snare hit, the hi-hat will get two dotted 1/16th notes rather than a single dotted 1/8th. TLDR; It's not syncopated notes or defined pauses in the original composition. It's mostly just dotted 1/8th notes.

I'm afraid you're wrong as well and your break down is super confusing for me. You definitely don't need any dotted notes. Let's "break it down again": It would be more appropriate to call the drum pattern a 2 over 3 polyrhythm. It would also be more appropriate to call the time signature of the song 12/8, which gives us the correct breakdown you were looking for. Not sure why you'd call it 12/16 as that would be nearly impossible to count at this tempo and isn't really correct anyway. The song is almost always transcribed in 12/8. What's happening in the beat can best be broken down this way: 12/8 signature Closed hi hat hit: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 Wash hi hat with foot: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 Kick: 1, 4, 7, 10 Snare: 4, 10 If you wanted to have it in 4/4 you'd break it down like this: Closed hi hat hit: syncopated triplet notes, i.e. you are hitting every other, only landing directly on 1 and 3 Wash hi hat with foot: opposite of the closed hi hat Kick: 1, 2, 3, 4 Snare: 2, 4 Washing the hi hat pedal in between each closed hi hat hit is nigh on impossible to do cleanly, particularly for such a long period of time in such mind-numbing repetition, which is why they used a drum machine for it. Or rather, they created this on a drum machine and then mimic it live with a real drummer. In the official video for it, the drummer can be seen hitting only the 1, 3, 5, etc... There are obviously some flares in most transition measures, usually a quarter note open hi-hat on 11 or the little pattern I transcribed at the end in the link below.
