I love this pianist. For me the best interpretation of the chopin studies. The most poetic, where the balance between technical play and interpretation reigns undisturbed.

It's really amazing when we find a pianist that makes "music" with the Chopin Etudes. The way Mr. Lortie sings the melodic line in the left hand of the central part of Etude No. 11 is a perfect example of this. Bravo Mr. Lortie !!

Lortie once played this music at Carnegie Hall after he'd broken his right leg, skiing. Soon afterward, I heard him play the Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto, brilliantly, with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under Robert Spano. The cast on his leg extended above the knee, so his right leg stuck out to the right of the piano, and he pedaled with his left foot! He must have pedaled the Etudes in NYC that way, too. As an encore, he and Spano gave us Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, in the four hand arrangement. That was a long time ago, but I'll never forget that night of magnificent music making. In the Rachmaninoff, I soon forget the multiple difficulties Lortie was dealing with and simply marveled in the Concerto as I rarely have. Then, there was the extraordinary generosity of the encore. Ravel, in general, and the Mother Goose Suite, in particular, are special loves, so I could not have been more appreciative. I'd loved Lortie's playing long before that night, but witnessing that concert sealed him as one of my favorite artists. Thank you, Mr. Lortie, for years of pleasure--and one unforgettable night in Atlanta.

I am on of the lucky person who heard Louis Lortie play all the Etudes live in concert, on Radio (SRC) in Montreal, was at the beginning of his wonderful career. It was amazing, very few pianists were doing that back then, was in 1988 I think. Love his maturity, to me it's one of the best version, after all those years, he should record them again, just so we can see the differences in his interpretation.

What really annoys me here is the camera cuts off the feet on the pedals. Pedalling is an intrinsic skill and I like to study it as much as the hands on the keyboard - I feel like half the performance is missing in the camera work. But I'm super excited to be going to Leeds on Monday to see Louis playing these - and see the pedalling live for myself.

Italian piano has a different base renascence than Steinway, but the Steinway high pitch end appears to be slightly brighter than the Italian. Of cause the Falizio offers much longer warranty time which tells the why.

Its interesting to note the technical decline between his version in "95 and now. Maybe they are better structured but also they are much slower and there are more slips. Not saying its bad, just I constate the stamina from younger days is gone, even with a piece which has a central place in his repertoire.

The only other time I saw this feat of playing boths sets of etudes in concert was way back when Alexander Slobodyanik did all of them on the 2nd half of a recital at Cal Tech in Pasadena. He played a Haydn Sonata and the Liszt Sonata on the 1st half. Any pianist who tries this and pulls it off is either the greatest pianist alive or he has a death wish.
