When it comes to the reliability of high performance or high output engines there is a lot of misunderstanding in the industry surrounding the technology being applied to engine bearings. Ron Sledge from King Engine Bearings talks to Andre in order to give us some insight into your options.
Discussed are the differences in construction plus the pros and cons of bi-metal vs tri-metal bearing shell constructions along with some of the requirements and implications of running tighter clearances, including the all-important tradeoff between embeddability and peak bearing loads.
Also covered are how modern bearing shells can offer improved load handling, additional lubrication holes and a reduced chance of lowered oil pressure care of Kings SmartLug™ technology, where the locating lug is positioned on the back of the shell instead of the inside surface helping remove the chance of oil leakage.

It is a shame the channel is not growing quicker. That said, it is not uncommon for very heavily tech oriented channels for a single topic (Automotive/Motorsport) to grow slowly. The Key is to try and make the Video's in the early days as budget friendly as possible and stick to it. The Numbers will come but will take time. I Have been in this industry for many years, I have a VERY broad knowledge but there have been things you have talked about or show that have made many light bulbs go off in my head. I Think a lot of "professionals" this this is a learning channel for "newbies". It really is not, it is a channel for everyone in this field. Keep it up guys!!

Craig Cundiff is the 2.4 the same as the 2.2 ecotec. I had timing chain guide fastener problems. The stupid tiny bolt that holds the right side guide in snapped off in the head. I took the access plug out and machined a piece that uses the plug to hold the top part of the right chain guide

The interviewer really does ask some good questions. like I never thought of why bearing material would be so important if there is that theoretical film of oil there that keeps the crankshaft from ever actually touching the bearing. that is a very good question.

@FFH best practice is to buy a couple sets and mix and match just like OEM. You may want to order a thinner set an just use one or two bearings from that set to get all clearances within spec.

I have always been curious how pressure effects rpms one a stock clearness. Honda's k24,k20,b18c,h22; will adding 15-30psi of oil pressure on stock clearness help bearing life at 10,000rpms? Stock crank/better rods/pistons/etc...
@invertedv12powerhouse77
@invertedv12powerhouse77 6 жыл бұрын
I have a question. He mentionned the subaru ej and fa engines tend to fail on the piston 2/3 con rods because they share the same oil "input" to lubricate. Does this somewhat explain the rod knock certain models (mostly the ej25s) commonly have? I have a ej251 that is still alive as my daily but its knocking terribly (when cold) and runs a bit uneven will a small knock when warm. Im probably going to give her a proper rebuild this summer when I get a backup car for summers (since in canada we have longer winters). I know there might be some other problems, but im thinking bearings and crankshaft runout/out of round will be some of the things ill be looking for the most. Im wondering if my engine doesnt get proper lubrification when cold
@blindabinda1234
@blindabinda1234 6 жыл бұрын
Inverted V12 Powerhouse maybe your oil pump is a bit worn out or the oil pickup screen might have some stuff on it making it take longer to prime everything. If you think the bearings are worn a bit try putting some thicker oil in it.it will act as a seal and give better oil pressure.

Check the bearing clearances are at least the minimum spec', carefully inspect the connecting rod and crank bores and cap mating surfaces for irregularities and make sure they are clean, clean, clean* as part of the bearing cooling is transfer from the bearing to their housings. If you have the tools, check the bores for correct 'crush' - if you don't have the tools, you can get a close approximation by fitting one bolt and mildly torquing it down to endure that side of the cap is seated and then measuring the gap on the other side - that will give the approximate circumferencial difference and if you divide by 3.14 it will give the approximate difference between the bearing shell's outside diameter and the bore's inside diameter which should match the crush you can estimate from the shell and bore tolerances. You should also check the clearance(s) between the sided of the crankshaft and the rods and block/cap. Use the correct viscosity oil for the application is a big part of it, as also noted in the video**. Personally, I run a fine file or stone along the edges of the bores and the shells to remove any flash from manufacturing - around

How much hp can a stock ej25 hold with a set of bi metal king bearing i would say .50 on the mains an .25 on rods stock rods shooting for 450whp how reliable is that set up
@KillSwitchNY
@KillSwitchNY 2 жыл бұрын
Just here to attest to King bearings. I have used many sets of their main and rod bearings in the bi-metal version for medium hp builds. Have done many LS, small block Ford and gen 1 small block Chevy. They have been on point with their thicknesses every time and they are always a great price. I use Clevite as well on some race engines but I have had to end up buying multiple sets to make 1 properly sized set.

Hey Andre next time you get a chance to talk with king bearings reps ask them why they no longer offer 6 bolt 4g63/4g64 main bearings in the USA it is one of the most popular engines built and raced still to this day and yet i can't order a set anywhere unless they are .25mm oversize.

Concerning 'embedability' I'd love to know more about that. In theory if dirt goes through and then gets embedded in the bearing it will hold it against the crank and score it or wear it away, this can't be a good thing and i've seen it. I would guess that soft bearing metal is used for when those times that it takes a swipe at the crank, but the downside is metal gets embedded in it, open to discussion on that though.

i wonder if there is any advantage to mirror polish main and rod bearings...?
@blindabinda1234
@blindabinda1234 6 жыл бұрын
PANTYEATR1 bearings are made to wear away and be the sacrificial piece. If bearings were polished the crank would end up ruined. And being polished there wouldn't be any "pores" to hold oil and keep a film on it. During a power stroke the oil would get squished out from in between the bearing and crank

Odd. Every time we go away from the "race" clearances and run "too tight" - as per most who should be knowing this, we talk lower end of factory tolerances - we see the oil temps drop.. not increase. ? This mostly on simple 100-160hp/cyl builds...but I know one 250hp/cyl build that runs main clearances you would not believe..
