Apple Home is a great option for controlling your smart devices, especially if you're already invested in the Apple ecosystem.
Like most smart home hubs though, Apple Home suffers from limited device support. With a Raspberry Pi running the awesome Homebridge software you can open up your Apple Home setup to a huge array of extra devices and accessories, way beyond the set of 'officially-supported' devices.

@@tech_craft I'm a Hoobs noob and struggling to get s Sony Bravia TV working. Great Video, have four Pi's always on the lookout for things to make their purchase justified to my wife! Home security cameras are very interesting, especially when using the like of Amazon Blink, and ring doorbell video speeds are just shite. Bridging closed platforms to each other looks great with Hoobs, something it looks like these big tech companies are going to attempt sometime in the future with a dumb specification. For now, I think to be interested in how the video feeds perform, and in event real-time notification would be nice to see. If work with just RTSP feeds, or even open platforms such as Onvif for more useful aspects like motion detection.

Once again thank you for posting this excellent video. I had been tinkering with Homebridge and the Raspberrypi a couple of years ago but at the end gave up as accessing the device with a terminal shell and having to read tons of documentations for making the smallest changes had burnt me out. My Raspberrypi0 WH was laying in a drawer doing nothing until I came across this video and decided to give it another shot last night. Hoobs was the key to success this time, in 30 minutes it was all working again and I stayed up till 3 AM to play with my new toy. Shame on you! :) I have now a perfectly working Apple Home setup with 3 smart sockets and more to come as Amazon is delivering today.. Thank you very much again and keep up doing this great channel!

Great video! Thank you for spending the time explaining one question I have though, how is the response time compared to actual HomeKit devices? Like does it take 5 seconds from the time you click it on to go through home bridge and then finally turn on the light?
@tech_craft
@tech_craft 4 жыл бұрын
For simple devices the response time is the same as native devices for pretty much everything. Lights and power sockets for example I cannot tell apart. My cameras have a small lag when loading, but that lag is also present in the camera native app so I don’t really think that’s an issue of Homebridge.
@bm4122
@bm4122 4 жыл бұрын
Tech Craft thank you for the response, as that was one of the main things stopping me from setting up a home bridge. Right now I only have a few smart devices (compatible with homekit) but I see if I wanted to buy all the switches in my house, I would save a ton of money setting up a home bridge!

If you use “vcodec”: “copy” in the camera setup then stream will be not transcoded and even RPi Zero can pass it to HomeKit without lags and other issues, also set stream resolution to 720p, it’s a standard resolution for HomeKit. Not only HOOBS can be easily installed, check Config-UI-X plugin - you can install Homebridge with UI-X in minutes.
@tech_craft
@tech_craft 4 жыл бұрын
I ended up patching the unifi video plugin to use copy since the unifi cameras supply h264 as standard. For cameras that don’t supply h264 video or don’t use AAC audio then you need to transcode either the video, audio or both. At that point, the stock FFMPEG install isn’t good enough because it doesn’t have hardware accelerated h264 and it doesn’t have AAC.
@paavels
@paavels 4 жыл бұрын
Tech Craft probably wrong ffmpeg buid, you can compile ffmpeg with omx hardware acceleration and aac support. Also newer versions of camera-ffmpeg plugin supports “copy” parameters.

I don't have access to a camera to test any more, but from my notes I had to: 1) Configure with username/password (no pin). This forces a login attempt and should send you a PIN 2) Now add the PIN and restart, this time it should log in and you won't get sent another PIN. You shouldn't get asked again either.

Can I use a Raspberry Pi Zero to install the Homebridge?
@FriendlyNeighborhoodBlindKiid
@FriendlyNeighborhoodBlindKiid 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can although I would not recommend doing it with security cameras because it will make the video super lag he or it may just crash the system. Only do this if you’re automating things like smart switches or plugs.

It’s great that there’s a way to install Homebridge / HOOBS as a direct install on an existing Pi, but the HOOBS “appliance” approach, where it manages the whole Pi, is just so easy and trouble-free, it’s worth dedicating a Pi to it. They’re cheap!

This may be a dumb question as I am trying to decide between the prebuilt HOOBS and the way you have done above. I have a LG 5k monitor which I am sure wont work with the Raspberry PI. I am wondering once you have flashed the SD card, which I am comfortable with, on a raspberry pi, can I just plug the raspberry PI into my network and go to the hoops.local address? I am trying to build it on my own without the need of a monitor if possible? Thanks!!
@tech_craft
@tech_craft 4 жыл бұрын
Both the pre-packaged SD card you can buy from Hoobs and the one you can flash yourself boot up with hoobs.local ready to go so you shouldn't need a monitor. If you're using Windows though, you'll need to install Bonjour for Windows so that your computer can see the .local addresses. support.apple.com/kb/dl999?locale=en_US I have an LG 5K - I can test out the Pi if needed to see if that setup is practical. I'm guessing you'll get at least HD on the monitor which will work even if it's a little fuzzy.

@@tech_craft This is awesome!! Thank you, though I don't believe the 5k LG can take any other input than a thunderbolt 3, as I have the older 5k monitor.

I mean after watching it looks like you’ve bypassed a bunch of potential security protocols to get stuff to work? Question because no ipv6? Call me ignorant because I am, but is there not a concern about IOT in this regard and why Apple is a bit of a pain to integrate?
@tech_craft
@tech_craft 4 жыл бұрын
There was the very recent announcement about all the major players starting to work together on a spec so that device support becomes more universal. That will be interesting to follow. The security issue is a big one, and part of why I prefer - where possible - to control devices locally rather than through the cloud. Apple Home and Homebridge make this a possibility and other than my Nest I've got everything controlled over a local connection with devices on a separate network than my main home network.

Michael Alderete I would have assumed a Windows:Ubuntu dual booted surface pro would have been the best combination of qualities as far as software variety is concerned for coding and also general computing with good portability Although there must be a good reason why highly skilled professionals tend to like Apple products even with their high price tags, they are highly tested and optimized pieces of hardware+OS+software options that seem to work well reliably and with good customer support However I think the best all-round combination of qualities in an OS is Windows+Ubuntu dualbooted on separate drives which can be separately encrypted if needed, best combo of affordability, usability, software variety and compatibility, privacy and security imo
