I had Spotify for 5 years, but switched back to Apple for sound quality and clarity. Plus, Spotify interface started looking cluttered and Apple has a more clean aesthetic (if that makes sense). I do miss my playlists on Spotify,however, I didn’t like how it took up all of the space on my phone. Spotify was the largest app on my phone 😅

I’ve tried all the music apps we’ve got access to in the UK, thanks to their free offers, but have now got a yearly subscription to Apple Music. I’m deep in the Apple ecosystem, and most of the music I like isn’t recent. If I want to discover newer music, I listen to my kids’ playlists when they’re cooking or driving (they’re in their 20s). It may not be perfect, but ‘it just works” (for me). Thanks for the content, as always!

You touched on my main issue with Apple Music, the autoplay sucks and isn’t tailored to what I’m currently listening to. It’s especially annoying as a rap fan because if I play any rap song it’ll just recommend any other popular rap song without taking into account the style, mood, or production. I was on Spotify for a while but recently switched to Tidal because Spotify’s app has gotten too cluttered with a bunch of content and recommendations I don’t care about. Would love to see you do a comparison of spotify vs tidal

Big one for me. Just because i Like rap doesnt mean i want to listen to Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. I never search, or listen to their music. Apple Music recommendations is too mainstream for me and feel more like promo recommendations vs personal. Spotify nails it for me.

One of the things I like about smart TVs is the user interface. It's easy to navigate and customize, and it has a lot of cool features. One of my favorites is the night mode feature on Spotify. It basically turns the TV screen into a dark background, and only shows the music information on the bottom corner. This way, I can listen to my favorite tunes without being disturbed by bright lights. It's perfect for when I want to relax or fall asleep with some music on.

I'm a big fan of Spotify's folder setup, so I can have specific playlists under specific folders (and fitting for certain moods, workflows, and all that). Apple music doesn't have that, as far as I'm aware, but then I haven't delved into that in a while.

Great comparison video. I been stuck between these 2 for the past several months myself. I been using Sprout premium for years now, but I'm new to the Apple ecosystem & trying to give it a fair shot, so I've been using Apple Music as well. So far for me personally, I like Spotify more, but I sometimes think it's bcuz I'm just used to it. Regardless, I'm paying for 2 streaming services when I definitely only need one... lol

I was using Tidal for a bit, then downloaded Spotify and between the two, Spotify stole my heart off of the strength of their radio. I'd listen to CHIKA's album while I'm cleaning and once the album ends, the next song is from a curated radio station based on that artist. Also, I feel you with the music videos. I haven't watched a music video since Kill Bill came out and I can't tell you how long it had been before that! Thank you for another informative and entertaining video!

Coming from somebody who works on a cruise ship Spotify is amazing it’s easy to use. Apple Music doesn’t work on the ship it doesn’t play the song, or the song will play but then cut off or the app wouldn’t open at all.

I am happy that someone finally did a video dedicated to this. This has been a passionate topic of mine. I appreciate both for their features. However, I still feel Spotify is a better curator with their playlists and I like that they recently added audiobook. ( buhbye Audible!) also small features like crossfade that Spotify has had forever, Apple JUST released in this last software. I have just since resigned that I will have both. sn. I still watch music videos but the older 90s ones. lol You playing in my face homey! 😂😂 Great video as always.

I’ve used both platforms extensively, but in the end, I’m sticking with Apple Music. Mainly due to easily upload original music / tracks to apple music. I know you can upload original tracks on Spotify, but I’ve always had issues with it. Also, Spotify you can only play on one device at a time, where with Apple Music I can play three different songs, on three different devices at the same time. (I do this on the regular bases at work). … and I’m kind of stuck in the apple ecosystem. I use the Apple one plan with the cloud storage, and the fitness service which I use at least 3x a week. Apple Music is bundled with it, so… 🤷🏾‍♂️ I do miss Spotify’s music discovery though…

Your Discoverability point 🙌🏾 I will say I was shocked u didn’t talk about “Discovery Weekly” from Apple music. That has improved Apple Music but still doesn’t compete with how much Spotify has to offer when it comes to discoverability and it’s AI.

I tried using Apple Music just because I didn't want to use Spotify anymore, and there were way too many issues and missed features on there that I couldn't justify sticking around and had to go back to Spotify. The discoverability of music was one of them. I listened to a playlist a little too long and ruined my Apple algorithm to the point of no return. The new Spotify AI DJ is a game changer too.

3 years ago I left Apple for Spotify due to sync issues with Apple. Fast forward two years later, and the sync problems were fixed in subsequent updates, AND they offered lossless tracks with the standard membership. So I went back to Apple. The reason I did was that Spotify kept putting spoken word recommendations in the app's main screen - I personally want to keep my spoken and music on separate apps. And they never (as of this comment) released a lossless tier. I LOVE the lossless through my big sound bar at home. Does sound a bit better, IMHO. All that said, I'm always on the 'bubble' with streaming services. I figure I'll return to Spotify if / when Apple makes me angry again. It probably will happen. Thanks for the review/comparison! (And Apple does need to improve their auto-play recommendations).

I’ll admit Apple Music is noticeably better if you do a side by side, even without the lossless. But the library and discoverability is more important to me and probably most people. Spotify has just been the underground indie go-to for far longer. If I really wanted sound quality I’d have to ditch the wireless and connect my DAC anyways, that’s a much better jump.

Before watching my choice is Spotify solely for the handoff feature. I have a ton of smart speakers over the house and I like being able to go from my speakers, to my computer, to my phone. Apple Music doesnt have that compatibility, and its one of the biggest things holding it back.

@@joeyn.3567 im not sure why they don’t have it, but I’ve tried Apple Music after using Spotify for so many years just to see and like TMO said you can go from one speaker to another and Apple Music either starts the song over or plays an entirely different song. With Spotify I can play a song upstairs, go downstairs to cook and tell my google to continue playing the song from upstairs no problem. Such a great feature 😃

Agreed, I am still on Apple Music, but I miss handoff too much. Also, I hate the mac app for Apple Music, don’t get why they dont’ update it. However, I believe would make sense Spotify if the price is a tad lower, otherwise the quality of sound is actually better with Apple Music

I have used spotify for at least five years and love it. I recently switched to apple music fully because i get it for free with cellular plan. it would be almost perfect with a better algorithm and if it have a connect feature like spotify. to be able to control playback on any or all of your smart speakers (echos in my case) with any other device logged into your spotify account is dope

Apple Music has collaborative playlists. It was on beta testing in IOS 17.2 Beta but Apple removed it because it wasn’t ready. Coming in early 2024. Maybe 17.3

Apple Music is getting better algorithms next year. But for more songs discovery for now, playlists on experimental stuff are pretty good. Pitchfork also makes playlists. I do feel like Spotify might inhibit discovering completely differently types, like if I like a lot of mainstream pop artists, would it really recommend me experimental songs and artists? Like FKA twigs, Arca, Sudan Archives, Rosalia (not English), so I wonder how the algorithms would work, same for whatever AI Apple will use next year. Would that create an information bubble but for music?

Im using the Apple Music free trial rn after being a Spotify user for 3 years…..I might be switching 🤷‍♀️ I’m not super big on podcasts or audio books, so those features are not super poppy to me. Playlists and things aren’t super big for me either because all Spotify usually does is pick the only songs I listen in each genre and put them into a “personalized playlist” even though I could quite literally just listen to my own playlist. The music video things on Apple Music made me go crazy, I love watching music videos, and it’s so awesome that for many of the artists I listen to, I don’t even have to leave the app. And finally, Apple Music is super easy to use across my entire phone, I’m not a huge tech person so I couldn’t really care about having it on every single one of my devices, I’m cold with it just being on my phone and iPad. Depending on how I feel about the rest of this month, I may become an Apple Music person.

iCloud Music Library is one of the key features of Apple Music that I love. I've got a decent catalog of music that's not available on streaming services. So, being able to have that on my computer, I can upload it to Apple Music and then stream it on Apple Music from any device, which is DOPE.

The thing i like about apple music i have almost 30,000 downloaded songs in one playlist on one device and have almost 10,000 song on my Spotify playlist i know their is a loophole with the like song list but you can only download 10Gs worth and sound quality is better on apple and music is much more louder too.

I mean discoverability is cool and all but I want my music to be crisp I gotta hear every beat and every breath the artist takes! but on the other side I do wish apple betters their algorithm for music recommendation cause unless I know exactly what I wanna listen to, letting the auto play run is a nightmare, I find myself constantly skipping songs

I love Apple’s discovery services called “Similar artists” playlists. I've discovered more that I like vs Spotify which just seemed random. There's Metallica after listening to Taylor Swift. Plus Apple’s superior sound quality and audio device additional feature integration. Apple Music wins hands down.

Great video. So If apple music doesn't do such a great job recommending more underground stuff, does it at least have the social component of Spotify, in that you can see user made playlists and FOLLOW said users and browse their playlists? For those of us that like to dig, this is one of the main reasons I stay with Spotify. I can not only browse a user's lists but see who they follow and who follows them and dig through THOSE crates as well. This is where the majority of my music discovery comes from. Thanks for any help.

Been an Apple Music user for years. What I miss from Spotify is better discovery/recommendations and honestly a better user interface. Not sure why Apple Music has both the Listen Now and Browse tabs and why Search has to be its own tab and not just accessible at the top from anywhere. On Apple TV, the Music app is nearly unusable and on top of that, AirPlaying to speakers is super confusing. Too deep into the ecosystem to switch now, but I wish Apple would do a deep redesign of the app.

Spotify has better curation, more devices use it like PlayStation, windows, etc. i also like the ui more and I have used Spotify since 2015 so they have all my playlists and listening history. As for audio quality I use Bose headphones and have a Bose audio system in my car and Spotify sounds fantastic on both of those

There's one thing Apple did I cannot understand. Apple Music, which is an app created by Apple mainly for Apple devices, supports lossless format audio, but neither an iPhone nor Airpods support lossless codecs. This means if you want to use the full potential of Apple Music sound quality you have to use an Android phone and some non-apple earbuds.

I had a 3 month free trial for both Apple Music and Spotify. I like that Spotify has music, podcasts and audiobooks included in the one price. Also with Spotify if I’m listening to an audiobook or song I can just press continue through Alexa (echo) on my iPhone and it continues playing exactly where I left off. However with Apple Music. I could play my playlist on my iPhone but whenever I was listening to Apple Music on Alexa (echo) it would just play random music not my playlist even though I asked to play my playlist. Also if I’m listening to Apple Music on my iPhone then want to continue play via Alexa it doesn’t play the song I was just listening too Again it plays any song.

Apple Music user. Aesthetics & sound quality are huge for me. I get what you mean about auto play though. One thing I loved about Tidal was the playlists it curated for me. It was about as good as Pandora!

I put years into Spotify before Apple Music was created. It may have more features but I’m with Spotify.

I’ve been stuck wanting to switch over to Spotify for at least a year now but I keep going straight back to Apple Music. I really want Spotify to be better but I just can’t get into it.

Why wasn’t the desktop applications looked at? If you compare the two desktop versions across Mac and PC there isn’t a decent Apple Music PC application.

I spend half of my year in one country and the other half on the other. As Spotify has a region restriction (I should choose my base and then I have limited time on the other region) Apple Music is no brainer for me.

On Family Plan. You state that Apple Music doesn’t cap you out. Which would lead one to think it’s unlimited but the image you post state up to six. Which yes it’s higher but Apple does cap you off.

Let's touch on the bugs. Spotify is buggy as heck. Turn airplane mode on. If you didn't download songs, it will tell you that you can't play a playlist. BUT if you click the green play button, it will play perfectly (because they cached the songs from before). The desktop app is a shitty electron app, that has a nasty memory leak, sometimes using more than 2GB of RAM. Yeah, no.

love Apple Music for lossless, hires lossless, spatial audio surround sound. don’t cripple your music quality with compressed spotify

Love Spotify been using it for many years. Now my kids are the judges of this generation all three prefer Spotify and dumped Apple Music, Spotify has better features and yes BABY Underground Artist to be discovered. My 3 kids are attending University all have iPhones except myself and my wife. My son is in a Frat and all of them are on Spotify! Been using Spotify due to my kids choice so we have been using it for about 8 years. So we pay for the Family Premium Plan and never went back to apple music.

I have to agree with you 100%. Spotify plays what I like but never heard before. Both are good and have their strengths but in the car or walking with the air pods in my ears… it’s Spotify.

I still mess with some Apple music though. It works for me, but if I get bored with it I’ll use free Spotify lol
