Very interesting Steve has given us something to think about, look forward to an update. Our solar panel is wired through a separate solar regulator. It’s what we inherited with the van, so previous owners must have had issues with the regulator as well. Cheers

I've got the Victron SmartSolar 100/30 wired directly to the batteries. Works very well, has a lithium profile if needed and let's you see what's happening via your phone. Also if you're spending some money please get a battery monitoring system. I've got the Victron BMV 712. Amps in and out is the only accurate way to see how your batteries are performing. This BMS also lets you see the information on your phone.

Hi…just watched your great video, it’s of interest to me because I need to disable the split charge system prior to fitting a lithium battery and a DC 2 DC charger. Have you moved along that path at all?
@TheHappyTravellers
@TheHappyTravellers 5 ай бұрын
Yes, that’s exactly what I did. I simply removed the built in charge controller and rerouted the solar panel wires to a new Victron mppt controller. I used a sterling DC-DC charger. I’d probably go with the new Victron dc charges if doing it today.

Ahh ok you are talking about the solar side, I have also changed my controller for a Votronic Due 250 controller, this one has the added benefit of feeding 1amp to the vehicle battery (hence the name Duo) I was actually talking about the split charge system that charges the hab battery from the alternator….im fitting a lithium battery and the split charge system (on some vehicles) “can” over stress the alternator and kill it. Just some food for thought. Ray

@rayleeson6135 oh yes sorry. The Sterling 30amp DC-DC charger seemed fine. This was on 3ltr Fiat Ducato (AutoTrail Comanche) There is the option of fitting an updated alternator if the standard one is under strain 👍😀😎

Hi Steve Very interesting Vlog tonight, i totally agree....the AT control panel is old technology and needs to be updated. The new control until you meantion is around £70. Which is not expensive ( who is the supplier)... what if I could do the same install, we could monitor & share the data and compare exact same motorhome, same layout, same year vans. I was very nterested in one of your subscribers who mentioned battery control and a monitor app for smart phone....with the combined install it should do the trick. Jason

The charge controller I’m looking at is by Victron 75/15 MPPT but I’m still working on the final details of the setup 👍😀😎

Charge controller MPPT straight from solar panel to batteries more efficient. for what your using, I would say you need 400 watts of solar, battery setup OK. Lithium batteries be careful they dont like the cold, most who use them are in doors like canal boats or van conversions, you put them in outside locker in the cold they die pretty quick.

When / if we go lithium, I think I’d put them inside 👍😀😎 As for the MPPT I’ll be going for a couple of 200 watt panels and going straight to the batteries. The Sargent unit can only deal with a max. 10 amp output from a solar controller. Our current battery set can take 30 amps 🤷‍♂️☹️🤔

Ha Steve that's really interesting, we have just had a new 100w solar panel fitted to our Swifty caravan roof. And a new 110AH battery with charge controller,i don't think the charge controller is a MPPT,is the MPPT controller more efficient than just a box standard one,and why is it better thanks.

There are PWM (pulse width modulation) and MPPT (maximum power point tracking) charge controllers. The MPPT type is more effective at delivering the solar power generated by the solar panel by up to 30% roughly. That’s why they are better and the preferred type these days.

If you are seriously thinking you will later move to Lithium (LIFEPO4) batteries then you need to make sure that everything you buy from now on supports them. This isn't as simple as the manufacturer telling you it does, you really need to choose a battery now and then look at the charging profiles. For example, the Sterling Lithium batteries want a charge voltage of 14.6 and a max of 14.8. SuperB batteries say they want a maximum of 14.4 volts and Victron, just to be awkward, would like 14.5. So, if you buy a MPPT for your existing batteries then make sure it has setting for the batteries you will choose. I also think you mentioned battery to battery charging in this video, in which case the information above is even more important. The batteries you have now (Yuasa) expect to be charged at 5A over 20 hours to get maximum service and capacity out of them, which with three batteries means you should only charge at 15A (yes I know nobody takes any notice of this!). If you charge them much faster they will deteriorate and you will notice they don't seem to hold as much charge. Lithium batteries can be charged at a much higher rate, typically over two hours from empty to full also known as 0.5C, many thousands of times without any problems. Victron seem to be the make everyone knows, but are very expensive and I would point out that they don't have an integrated BMS. If you buy a lithium battery with an integrated BMS then this means it will shut down itself when you try to misuse it, typically by running it below 0% or overcharging it. I don't mean not to buy something like a Victron BMS712 as these are essential with whatever system you buy, I just mean built in electronics that stop you killing a battery worth £1000+ .

Excellent points. I do have Victron LiFeP04 in mind and am specimen Victron components that are programmable for different battery types. I’m probably going Victron all the way and am now a Victron KZfaq junkie 😆😆😆 Thanks for the comment, much appreciated 👍😀😎

I would recommend looking at Sterling and particularly looking at their videos where they test their batteries.

Yes, I’ve seen that battery test. It sort of was the final push for me to decide to go Lithium at some date soon. Not a real life test but does show a massive difference in the batteries especially Lithium 👍😀😎 The people parked next to us at Bonterra have a Sterling Lithium set up installed by VanBitz - unfortunately their 200Amh of Lithium is not doing well. Something wrong with the setup or one of the batteries is duff we think. They’ll get it looked at when back in the UK.

The charge power is also routed through the Sargent Unit circuit board which then limits the amps allowed to charge the batteries. It's all very 1980's tech :(
