Today I explore the insides of my Technics SJ-MD100 Minidisc deck and repair a fault it has with the jog dial being extremely jittery to the point of no control. The solutions is simple but I had great fun exploring the system while trying to get access to the jog dial itself.

That MD mechanism is common throughout ALL Technics models. This includes the midi-sized SJ-HD501. As for issues with the jog dial, that is also common on Sony units.

Maddie if the skipping issue comes back, you can de-solder the rotary encoder from the board. Then bend back the metal tabs holding the rear of the encoder in place. The skipping is caused by the original lubricating grease drying out as well as some degree of oxidization. You can clean the encoder with a 4mm Fibreglass propelling pencil and De-Oxit. The encoder does not have any holes like a potentiometer to allow spray cleaning. When re-assembling the encoder ensure the metal tabs are squeezed tightly, holding the rear of the encoder in place. This will ensure the shaft of the encoder is held firmly in position when the knob is re-fitted. You should then find the encoder is precise in operation and no longer skips.

@@MsMadLemon I wonder if anyone makes a drop in replacement optical or magnetic rotary encoder. I've heard they are much more reliable (with ratings in the millions of rotation cycles) than contact based ones (maybe tens of thousands of cycles for a good one).

Watch your Minidisc video ages back and that actually got me into buying my first minidisc and it was this exact model. Like this format that I missed first time round. I too notice some skipping on the job wheel with mine but only notice it when i was trying to name tracks (which can be crazy frustrating process). So will try the deoxit trick. Thank you :) Don't know if you used some stabilisation on the wider shots but noticed weird waving distortion on your clips which made me go dizzy. Maybe just me? Keep it up. Always enjoy your content. :)

Nice to know you got this model, its actually pretty nice deck and has put up with a lot of abuse and still going strong :o) Everytime people see it they talk about how bad their Sony was, I am surprised as I thought the Sony ones would be the best, I guess not! One thing I recommend, if you're going to try Dioxit, try the one specifically for faders. I 'm going to get myself a can of that stuff as this does make potentiometers feel a bit different, i've been told it gets rid of the grease in them which can't be good. Yes, on some of the sections were a bit shaky so i did use stabilization, a shaking camera is a pet peeve of mine and i really cant stand it. But it seems the stabilization didnt work as well for some clips for some reason.

Here from search keys SJ-MD electronics. I expected a little less emptiness and more stuff on the inside but I guess it's fine. But there's a lot one can do in an old machine like this, open up the transport mechanism and clean, grease and lubricate. I'd carefully inspect the spindle in your unit, I noticed your MD spinning quite jittery. If one opens the front panel it's absolutely advisable to clean the display window and the display itself and de-oxidize every single push contact button. They can oxidize and when they do they may trigger something else or not do anything. Comparable SONY units have a soldered CR2032 tabbed battery inside to store setting parameters... that is to be changed by now and worth investigating in the Technics. I'd pick the ATRAC audio from this unit over full quality MP3 through DAC from integrated chips on most PCs and MacBooks. Still a respectable basic value Hi-Fi unit from when things were made more substantially than today.

Maddi, Thanks so much for not giving up on the Minidisc format. I have a few Minidisc players myself, two of which are Sony MDS-JE510 machines that have loading problems that probably can't be fixed.:-( They're known for having loading problems. Your Technics machine may have been well-used, but it seems to have held up really well. I think I will keep my eyes open for a Technics Minidisc player.

This Technics deck is pretty solid, it's been knocked around, stored in attics where its gone stupidly warm, in garages lol and still works. I've heard from a couple of people, now you also, that the Sony Decks arent as sturdy and prone to breaking down? Surprised hearing this actually as I thought they were better than this Technics.
@THOMMGB
@THOMMGB 5 жыл бұрын
@@MsMadLemon Apparently there was a problem in the loading mechanism where a microswitch (or something) didn't engage when it should so the nylon gears broke off against each other. That's what happened to the two Sony MDS-JE510 decks that I own. I think I paid $1.00 each at an antique radio swap meet for them. The owner just wanted to get rid of them. After much fooling around, I was able to get one of them working a little and it sounded great. It was the ejecting of the Minidisc that continues to be a problem. There is a documented repair procedure if the eject mechanism nylon gears aren't too badly mangled. Unfortunately, both of mine are. Live and learn. :-)

I got a MDS-JE510 years ago for practically free with a stuck disc that also couldn't read. I finally fixed it so it could accept and eject discs reliably but never got it to read (the laser looked fine putting it into service mode and measuring the playback and record power levels, I suspect maybe some mechanical issue).

whilst it is a lovely player and no doubt high quality from Technics, it does kind of defeat the while point of the mini disc. Its was meant to be small, convenient and this player is HUGE! Love your videos.
@MsMadLemon
@MsMadLemon 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Yeah it is huge, and judging by the space inside it could obviously be created smaller, however I think the reason for it being was for it to fit in one's hi-fi setup and go with everything. The portable players/recorders were of course meant to be small and they are just millimetres bigger than the disc itself. I guess it wasnt so bad having a large deck like this as an option for those who needed, the larger size made home recording easier for me at least.

there are two reasons 1 the laser head position switch is clogged, you need to drop some alcohol, but it’s difficult to reach, the mechanism doesn’t allow you to reach it 2 the motor of this mechanism is bad, and it does not have time to move left and right try to lightly twitch the laser left and right, if it works, turn on the last thing possible, and when the laser goes to the right, turn off the power. Use your hand to turn the bezel from behind the mechanics until the disc comes out. Then drop some alcohol on the switch below and press it. Good luck.

The bottom laser reads the disc, it also heats the disc up for so the record head located on top which is basically a tiny electromagnet can alter the particles in the disc, which gives them the term magneto-optical

The laser lens has closed loop servo mechanisms with a high enough bandwidth and fast enough response time in order to track within limits vertical disc wobble, as well as some variance in the axial tracking position. I like having physical media with artwork/lyrics I can hold in my hand as I listen. And the idea that every note is encoded into this tiny "fragile" metal coated plastic disc that rotates and bounces laser light off ... it never fails to blow my mind that it works as well as it does despite knowing about the technical aspect of it.
