Thanks for this, it gives me much to learn. I have a beautiful Technics M258R that is clean and mostly functional, but needs new belts. It's a bit different from the model in your video though. It looks like a nightmare to take apart. But your video helped me realize the mechanism probably comes out in the front, hopefully like yours, although mine has a big plastic shroud around the whole back, seemingly molded into the main case. Your video helped me decide not to scrap it for parts tonight!

I noticed the speed isn’t constant. These quality decks have a big heavy flywheel on the capstan axis so normally they run perfectly. I think the speedregulator inside of the capstan motor needs some cleaning...😄

What are the belt sizes you used, as the original belts have stretched and service manual only lists part numbers?

Most crucial one is for the head transport and should be 48,5 x 1,5 mm or 49 x 1,5 mm. Don’t use a 1mm belt because that will slip and wear very soon as it has a big job to do! I made the same mistake. Mine now runs perfectly with the 48,5 x 1,5 mm but the wind/rewind operation is slightly slower because of its diameter.

I bought my RS-M255x in Germany in 1982. It still works perfectly today....except for the little light bulb that illuminates behind the cassette tape. That bulb hasn't worked in years but today I decided to have a look at it. Any idea what the replacement bulb is?

3mm white LED with ballast resistor.

@@electronicgadgeteering Thank you! I just tried an LED with a 400 ohm resistor and it works well. The resistor does get very hot! 14.2 volts coming out of the board.

@@Roymac01 Pokušaj sa otpornikom veće snage od 1 W . Veliki je pad napona na njemu pa se stvara temperatura jer si postavio otpornik od 1/4 W.

What type of grease/lubricant do you put on the spindles after you have cleaned them?

I use silicone grease for plastics, and I use a Teflon-based lubricant on the metal parts

Mine has silver buttons instead of blue and the aluminium door insert has a brushed finish instead of mirror gloss bytheway...😮

Hallo zusammen, ich habe vor ein paar Tagen die rs m255x gekauft und habe ein Problem mit der Geschwindigkeit der Kassette; es ist zu hören, dass es beschleunigt wird. Ich möchte es selbst reparieren, weiß aber nicht genau, welchen Knopf ich bewegen soll. In dem Video habe ich einige VR-Potentiometer gesehen ... wird eines davon zur Korrektur der Geschwindigkeit verwendet? Grüße aus Chile

The adjusting trimmer is inside the capstan motor. In the video at 9:43 you can see the back of the capstan motor and there you see a black circle (hole) inside is adjusting trimmer.
