This is my old Technics RSM275. One of the better 2 head cassette decks of all time. Also one of the more challenging units to service, due to the way it is assembled. It now has a new cam control belt, has needed one for probably 20 years and finially I got around to changing it.

From the second you lifted the top i liked it. No corner cutting, i do like the seperate processing pcbs. And the numbered plugs for servicing. It shows that they wanted it to be repairable :-D It's a real shame that most companys don't give a dam!. I imagine it was very expensive.

I bought the RS-M228X brand new back in the day. It also had DBX and the same style meters which I loved. Glad to see another one saved. Excellent deck!

This video was an early Christmas present for me :) I have an RS-M253X that has the same mechanism and the same issue with the cam belt. I have it on the shelf for a few years, waiting to service it and was not really keen to take it apart before I had a chance to see the details of dismantling it properly. Many thanks for taking the time to make this video and I do hope this deck continues to provide flawless service to you. Merry Christmas to you too!

Hi. That's a fine job. I have done it on RS-M280. I think this mech is referred to as M250 (when it first appeared). Don't quote me though because I can't find that info at the moment. Anyway the belt in question called "changing belt" is the same in the RS-M280. Technics number QDB0287. I don't know if I found the cross for it in the PRB catalog, but the notes I took say to use SBS5.6 or SCQ5.6. The latter is the PRB belt. the wall size of the square belt is .051". The sbs5.6 is essentially the same. The fast wind idler tire is another story. The Nak BX tire is close but but quite right. My notes say an IT-57 would work but that is no longer made. I think got a tire from Dean Sanborn that works. It's similar to the IT-54 which is said to work on the Nak BX. It works but it is not ideal in this Technics. Then I got a tire from another web site that claims to be for the Technics RS-M255x, RS-M275x, RS-M280 and RS-M273. I just have not get around to installing it! Is it any wonder why?

Hi. Thank you very much for this video. That will help me for replacing belt to my deck. I replaced the small one but it is too tight (and the deck is eating some tapes, i think because of the belt, however some other tapes play normally). The other belt is much difficult. Can you give the size of the two belts ?? A friend of mine offers to give two belt, and he don't know the exact size.

sure is a difference in what's inside, some decks you open up and they're nearly empty inside and others like this one are packed full of components

I had one of these but mine was duel capstan and flat belt that drove both captains! I was working on the thing and trying to clean belts and I caused the belts to come off the flywheel and tried to fix it but something messed up and didn't work after so I threw it away! Should have not and tried to fix it but I didn't have the patience!

Hello. Thank you very much for this video. I have the same deck since two years. It works very well until yesterday. When i put a cassette, it plays for several minutes before stopping. I noticed that take up reel doesn't run for some seconds and then it runs fast to maintain the cassette playing, doing this many times before stopping. What do you think is the problem, and can i fix it myself ? . I never serviced a deck by myself and there is no person here qualified to do this, as this one is very complicated.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
This deck uses a separate motor to turn the take-up spool for a playback and record only. Uses direct drive motor for capstone has a real motor that operates the take-up and supply reels for fast forward and rewind and it also operates the cam to raise and lower the head and a third motor is just for turning the pickup School on play and record. Could be that motor is failing or slipping because I believe it does have a belt and of course the rubber tire or it engages the pickup spool.

@@12voltvids i opened the deck, found the two belts in very bad shape. Suddenly, it stops playing and the head is blocked. I must turn off the deck and turn it on again to make the head down and eject the cassette. FF is still ok, Rew is ok but not until the end, it stops before end of the tape.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
@@salusamu if you put on too tighter belt for the control belt which is the one that raises and lowers the head it can bog down the real motor. That can cause it to stop prematurely when rewinding or fast forwarding because of the extra load from having too tight a belt spinning that idling pulley. Even though that pulley isn't doing anything other than freewheeling until one of the mechanical operations is called to raise or lower the head if the belt is too tight it will still put excess tension on the bearings which will slow the motor down and cause it to stall when fast forwarding your rewinding especially near the end of the tape or more torque is required

There seems to be an ~10kHz signal sitting on the audio of the last few vids: this, the minidisk and turntable vid. Not sure what's causing it but sounds to be some form of interference. Sounds like tinnitus.

I have an Akai GX-M50 and it has a bias knob but i have no idea how to use it. Do i increase bias or decrease bias when recording? So i leave it at zero :-(
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 3 жыл бұрын
Lower bias increases treble response and higher bias favors the base. You need to record white or pink noise and experiment to see what setting gives the most natural playback of the pink or white noise. Each brand of tape has a slightly different setting, so once you find it you just reset to that setting when you load that brand of tape.

Sounds like you're playing back a recording that hasn't been recorded with Dolby. Make sure you have Dolby on not only on playback, but also when you're actually recording the tape.

It's annoying that higher end brands are no better than lower end brands (ie: Lloyd's) when it comes to belt replacement. I know, a Lloyd's unit from the 90's is hardly worth the time to work on, but being the unit I had when growing up as a teenager, I couldn't help myself.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 3 жыл бұрын
Well considering this unit is 36 years old and this is the only belt that has been replaced i would say that is pretty good. Notice that i didn't change the play take up belt. It was fine. This one just got a bit slippery and if it didn't have a crack, it would have been to be a good candidate to boil to restore some elasticity.
