A modern spin on a classic, the SP-10R is a seriously high-performance turntable, and we have a brand new one! This is the turntable and power supply-only version of the award winning SL-1000R. Jeff goes through the unboxing process for this turntable and installs it into a rare SH-10B7 obsidian plinth, along with an even more rare EPA-100mkii Boron tonearm.
Based on the design of the first direct drive turntable, the Technics SP-10R is one of the best performing tables you can get for the money.

Stunning turntable. Love how Technics made possible to have Vintage and modern blend in into such a lovely instrument. Perhaps it would be possible to find a clear rubber mat or somewhat translucent to have us eye feast on that beautiful brass platter. Finally, the tone arm is very impressive. It did cost almost as much as the plinth itself.

That sure is a beautiful turntable. I currently have an Sl 1200 m3d with an Ortofon Bronze on it.

The Ortofon Cadenza bronze is a great cartridge, and likely the one we will end up using here.

The 1000R is a better more cohesive looking package to me. And, you can add two arm boards. A new version matte obsidian plinth with matte power supply case would be interesting.

I have an SL1000R. I must confess, the black plinth looks fabulous! And you are right, you should get the best cartridge for it you can. That Quintet Blue barely makes the grade. I equipped mine with a Cadenza Black (I also have a Quintet Black). Also, its pays to get an Ortofon step-up transformer like the ST-70. No Ortofon moving coil cartridge is complete without one. With it, it sounds better than with any other MC preamp you can buy. They are peas in a pod.👍 The hinges, however, I could do without. The new platter doesn't have one for a reason, the dust cover weighs more than 2 lbs.

Don't understand why the power supply is now in a silver case versus an obsidian color match. Otherwise, a very handsome update.

It may be able to, but we're not totally certain it would.

No, it would not. The effective length is too long. Maybe with some custom work, it could be made to fit, but the dust cover would be unusable.

technics sp10mkII is still top player and when compared one to one does better than the sl1000r but it ia atill an subjective opinion. I rate things by what can they do (SOUND) not by looks.

The SP10 is a fantastic table...for its era, and still is. However, the new version is orders of magnitude improved in all parameters, Particularly, in isolation. The noise floor and freedom form resonance are basicly beyond the limits of measurement. These platters were always built to be, in essence, laboratory grade equipment. Like other lab grade equipment, the state of the art has changed a bit in 40 years. For example, the control boxes of the SP10 and the SP10 might look identical on the outside..... On the inside, they completely different animals. One is like a 1980's Texas instrument calculator with its myriad of IC chips and transistors, the new looks like a proper 21st century computer.

@@Tacet137 have you tried them both side by side? I would think the same: the newer, the better... There's also a VPI hw-40, also a direct drive unit with similar price. wondering which one is better...
