This is the techno rumble tutorial to end all techno rumble tutorials. It condenses the principles that you find in all other rumble tutorials online into 3 logical levels: the basic, the intermediate, and the mastery level.
- The basic level: making a rumble in parrallel by smearing, low-passing and ducking the kick.
- The intermediate level: adding saturation, EQ and limiting on the rumble and the group.
- The mastery level: creating a sound sculpture by adding texture, percussion and atmosphere.
Here is the poster mentioned in the video:

I tried to recreate 1990s hardtrance reverb-sub-kick, and got stuck on a 'basic" level, lol. I didn't even know that this thing is called "techno-rumble" Until the Skies have sent me this video )) Now I'm on "intermediate" level, which for the sound of 1990s means "like a boss" )) Thanks a lot, very useful!

Like him, I've watched pretty much every single YT video on this subject and this is far and away the only one I needed. As someone who used to work on electronic music way back in 2000 as a highschool student, with zero music theory, or background in music - its amazing seeing how you're supposed to actually engineer these sounds. I used to kinda "fake" what I heard and tried to recreate it in Reason and such. Usually layering multiple drum kicks, and delay and reverb.

@OscarUnderdog
@OscarUnderdog 3 жыл бұрын
The answer to this is partially getting a good monitoring system (subwoofer & sonarworks), partially using reference tracks (see the video on RMS and Peak volume), and then focusing on getting the mids to sound banging without relying on the sub frequencies.

I’ve been trying something similar with all hardware (in fact, almost all analogue): the trick is that the reverb tail from percussion is pretty much just filtered noise, especially if you’ve sidechained out all of the early reflections. So, some white noise through a band pass filter can give you a pretty good rumble without even needing reverb, and you can shape it in all sorts of creative ways.

Now I am really curious how techniques like this translate to music outside of Techno. Textures created from obliterating a duplicate channel that maybe isn't using a kick as source material or not using a 4x4 beat. Makes me really want to learn more about how the music is made from artists like Roly Porter and Emptyset.
