I have not had that problem, even when I have deleted photos and videos from my phone. When people have this problem it's typically because when they "only delete photos from their phones" they do the deleting from within the Google Photos app. That's a HUGE mistake. You should only delete the photos from the phone itself, NOT from the Google Photos app that's on your phone. I don't own an Android phone, but on the iPhone there's an app called "Photos" that comes pre-installed on the phone. Any photos I take on my phone are automatically stored in that app, and they take up space on my phone. After I'm absolutely sure that my photos and videos are COMPLETELY uploaded to Google Photos, then I know it's safe to delete the photos in the PHOTOS APP, but not in the Google Photos app. Here's a summary I found on a Google forum, by a user named Craigus, that I thought was helpful: "To clear a few things up: 1) Yes you can delete photos from the iPhone camera roll and it will remain in Google Photos (As long as it had completed uploading) 2) If you delete a photo from the Google Photos app on your phone it will be removed everywhere (Google Photos cloud, Google Photos app, iPhone camera roll and iCloud) 3) If you delete a photo from the Google Photos cloud (photos.google.com) it will be removed everywhere (Google Photos cloud, Google Photos app, iPhone camera roll and iCloud) 4) The Google Photos app does continue to upload photos to the cloud while the app is in the background and even when the phone is locked."

I actually tried deleting a couple of photos today from my Android phone, and had this same experience, even when following guidelines to delete only from my phone. Seems that this is a problem sometimes for Android and iPhone users.

It might have something to do with the syncing. Two way sync? Taking off from the phone takes off from Google Photo. If possible, disable sync then delete from phone. Test this with a photo you don't mind losing. Regards Sedan

Thanks for your reply. But it still leaves a problem - if I stop the synching, then delete photos from my phone to save space, when I turn the synching on again, Google Photo will delete the photos. Seems to defeat the object of storing in the cloud.

Solved it. I have to access the program from the dotted square google Icon in the upper right hand corner of the browser. If I enter it through drive or go to the URL I have no buttons available. Is that normal?

I've also noticed that recently. It didn't used to be that way. I'm assuming it's something Google will fix, hopefully soon.

Anastasia Giannakis You mean do they disappear on Google Photos? No. They won't. However, if photos in Google Photos get deleted accidentally, you can see them in 'Trash' and restore them from there.

I agree the old Picasa was great. Google Photos has a slightly different purpose.

Picasa was active for over 6 years, during the early years it was constantly improved with extra features. However Google bought it, then some years later killed it. The successor Google Photos does not replace Picasa, although it has features Picasa did not have. At the same time Google Photos does not have features which Picasa had. For Picasa users Google Photos is say two steps forward and 5 steps backward. Consequently I hardly use Google Photois, basically out of necessity, because Google Photos cannot do what Picasa did (so far).

I wish Google would bring back Picasa for us old people, they can have 2 programs. Then in 5 more years when we are all dead they can get rid of Picasa??????

I also miss Picasa (and other great Google Tools that have come and gone, like Google Reader, etc.), but Google Photos isn't meant to be a replacement for Picasa. It's really more of a replacement for Picasa Web Albums, which was the cloud component of Picasa. This is a different thing. For me, the main draw for me to use Google Photos is that I can upload all my photos so they're backed up to the cloud and I can easily share them, etc. If you have a different purpose, use a different tool.
