remle ikawura if a system codec got messed up its because you messed it up klite keeps all current codec profiles the same but it does allow you to change them so maybe you hit something by accident and assumed it was klite that did it. o and if you set your default playback to higher than 44.1khz i believe it is will cause many games to crash because their codecs do not support anything higher

Codecs and containers are easily confused, for example .mp4 is usually associated with lossy video, but can also contain lossy AAC files as well as lossless compressed music files in the ALAC format: which is why it's usually changed to m4a.

lossy compression is the process of creating averages in the data. For example a video codec might notice that there's a lot of white behind Linus and as such decide that instead of storing the slight alterations in colour it'll store it in blocks of colour instead. This is why if you watch a DVD you'll notice slightly blocky skies. This has the advantage of being much smaller but the disadvantage of irreparably changing the data. Uncompressed or Losslessly compressed data stores the data without actually changing the output at all. In its simplest form, each pixel has a colour value in each frame and is saved one by one. Lossless compression codecs will compress the file in a similar way to how a Zip file does but that's a lot to explain in a KZfaq comment. Basically lossy compression actually removes data from the stream in a way its creators hope you won't notice. There's a lot of technology working to compress your videos - and its all based on what your human eye can't see, ie. Being as transparent as possible. Hope that helps!

I beta test for them and at this moment I don't recommend them. People will fall into a trap. Well not trap but will be unhappy if they get it now. The apps on Mac and Android have been broke for a while now. Not staying connected. This is public release and BETA release. So shows they haven't a clue how to fix it. I have had to revert to a version before 2.0 on android. It works then but if you get it from the Google store it is broken.

Marcus Smith yeah. As a beta tester it wouldn't bother me. But when the public release is doing it as well its annoying sure. Hopefully they do.

Quickie episode suggestion. Mice sensor types and dpi. I was recently wondering about the dpi mostly. At around 4k dpi that most gamer mice offer these days, 1cm of movement of the mouse gives you like 2000px movement of the cursor on the screen. That makes it impossible to operate so.... why go that high with the dpi? Is this just for the marketing?

I've uploaded large files to KZfaq because they refuse to support lossless codecs. The most recent one was about 18GB and had less than 5 minutes of video. Considering most of the size comes from me having to resize the video so KZfaq actually uses a decent bitrate, a lossless codec would almost completely nullify the difference in filesizes due to information hardly changing.

Hi all. I'm confused about codecs. I want to upload video I've used my phone to record at 4k60fps with the H.264 codec. Phone video is variable frame rate which means I have to convert it to a constant frame rate. My editor gives me good, better, best options which are H.264, DNxHR, and UT Video respectively. DNxHR and UT Video are insanely huge but uncompressed. I'm wondering if there would be any difference in quality though going from H.264 to H.264? Then when it is time what should I export to? If I understand correctly KZfaq is going to use VP9 but does my export codec have any impact on end product on KZfaq? How do I balance this out because a 30 minute video with one of the larger codecs is roughly 500gb which with a 50mbps upload(fastest I can get) it will take almost a day. So short version is, when converting a 4k60fps H.264 video from VFR to CFR does using H.264 cause more loss or do I need a better codec? Whatever codec I used for conversion, what should I use to determine export codec after editing if my intent is 4k60fps uploading to KZfaq that will use VT9?

A few questions for future vids. You mentioned that different codecs are better for different situations. Could you elaborate on that? Also, a very interesting problem I wanted to talk about. A lot of players (VLC included) offer slower playback options, but their options only read their media in 24fps. When using my GoPro at, say, 120fps, this is really frustrating. Is there some way to get a media player to play in slo-mo using the full 120fps data? Everything I've tried (WMP, VLC, HP Video, etc) can't seem to do it. Thanks!

i use klite. It lets me use a more stable player and i have never run into a video i cannot play. I have heard good things about CCCP (combined community codec pack) though.

Nearly every file format is a container. Even a mp3 can store data like the track name, album cover or artist

so basically, with higher and higher video quality coming to a end within the next decade (getting as detailed as the human eye allows) and with videos remaining the same length in duration, as well as 5g around the corner we just have to wait for Moore's law to catch up to where lossless compression no longer becomes an issue, where net speeds can stream 60 gigs worth with ease, and hard drive space reaches into the hundreds of terabytes, is this correct, or will it ALWAYS be a "cat and mouse game" within a lifetimes (foreseeable) future? (now to 50 years from now?)

I used to use K-Lite and always had a backup player in the form of KMPlayer, because K-Lite just doesn't work with everything. Then i switched to KMPlayer entirely since it worked better than K-Lite, but then they "evolved" and i had to get rid of it, and now i use GOM Player, so far so good. I didn't like VLC for a lot of reasons (not playback related)

lol I had to slow down the video speed in order to catch up on all the terms he's throwing at me. Great explanation regardless!

The KMPlayer is a good media player. Contains some codecs that vlc doesnt. At least it did when I used it a few years back

Install GOM Player instead of VLC, upvote this after testing. It's the best media player out there, no doubt about it.

I don't think GOM is catching up the mainstream media players. VLC appears to be the best in terms of reliability and user-experience.

SomeNiceMovies You didn't jump into my segue, of course it was meant to be a bluff. I'm an IT student and as you expect I do lots of programming and I just built a computer about a month ago :) So please, be nice.

I agree, its amazing. I have VLC but its ugly, the settings and the UI of GOM are great.

NeilFX GOM eats VLC any day of the week. So much more settings to set, better codec system, easier to use and more advanced if you want it to be. VLC doesn't even come close. I used VLC for about 4-5 years or something. It had alot of bugs, it's crashing alot and some other problems. Have had very small and very few issues with GOM. And the ones I've had got solved by a simple google search. Whereas when I googled for VLC problems, no one had the sollution. My friends still use VLC. They complain alot. The ones that use GOM complain WAY less and some of them never. Your IT studenting didn't help you on this question, man. Use GOM for another year and then come back to say that it's worse. If you do say it is you'll be lying.

The few drawbacks i have seen with vlc is. No .wav support... wtf is the use for that one anyways? Seems to only be used for 8 bit or 16 bit audio, and last time i had one it was a pain in the ass to convert. Cant play gif files... dunno why. Wmp does both of thesw though and this where i use it.
