I built a weather balloon kit and decided to send a brand new iPhone 7 while its recording into space without any case/protection.
There ended up being a massive jet stream from launch site so the iPhone traveled approx. 3 hours away and it took us another 3 hours to hike onto unknown mountains to retrieve this thing.
If anyone has any idea why the iPhone randomly shut off and stopped recording in space before it even reached burst altitude (100,000 ft.), comment below! It was a 128GB model so it should have captured the entire crash landing.

I think is because it landed on dirt and it was on a balloon, and they don't suddenly run out of helium instantly unless you pop it. It deflated slowly.

agree it's way too cold up there and the iPhone will shut off due to either extreme cold or extreme heat. That was an awesome video you should do it again but keep the iPhone warm somehow. also try to keep it from rotating so much.

I believe the coldness of high altitude's made it shut off. It happens to my phone when I'm skiing. Later when I make it into the lodge to find my phone is now off and find it will take a while for it to turn back on because its still too cold and even when I can get it on its still too cold to respond to tutch.

(Late Comment) I have 3 reasons why it stopped recording in space and had shut off. 1. It is too cold in the atmosphere so when getting to space it has already stopped recording. 2. The iPhone had hit something perfectly enough that powered it off. 3. If it got to an astronaut, they powered it off. My 1st reason is why it shut off and stopped recording. My 2nd and 3rd reasons are why it shut off.
