@@briannawilliams7370 I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way!! They totally screwed up the fiddle of the sole! There's a reason that lemonwood pegs are used. You can't just replace them with brass tacks! Hell, I was a bit pissed at Trenton and Heath for using brass, but at least they used one row of lemonwood pegs. I hope by now, that these well intentioned cobblers understand that they screwed this up, and are doing better work on Tecovas! If not, they need to binge Trenton and Heath videos!! Hope you're safe and healthy!!🤗

I have some questions for you. I've been told by others that lemon wood pegs are best as they shrink and expand at the same rate as the leather so they hold longer and wont back out like metallic fasteners, what are your thoughts? How did you clean the boot before applying the re-colorant? Will a wax based product cause excess wear on the vamp of the boot?
@snellvilleshoerepair
@snellvilleshoerepair 4 жыл бұрын
carl in my opinion brass nails hold the best. They actually enter the sole, and footbed, and clinch the inside on the footbed. While pegs are just stuck in the sole and footbed. I see more pegs that fall out of soles and I ever do clinching nails. Liquid saddle soap was used to clean the leather. And no a wax product will do nothing but help them be protected and last longer.

I also have a question, and I can't seem to find any forums or answers online. Can you darken or dye just the embroidered stitching on a boot? I have some boots that have brown stitching that I want to make black. But without effecting the brown leather. Is this possible?

A great job to be sure. Curious as to the brass nails instead of lemon wood pegs for a leather sole job; however, very well done and looks great! Saphir makes some awesome products. I still use Lincoln wax for my base coats and then pate deluxe for the finish coat on a spit shine. I wish Tecovas made a square toe (steel toe) for work with a vibram sole instead of leather for ~200 and they’d sell very well. Love leather shoes/boots but leather soles always seemed a draw back IMHO because of how fast they wear and not water proof.
@snellvilleshoerepair

Wood pegs can be done but they are more oriented when making boots not repairing them. The JR leather we used is waterproof and they wear extremely well.
@nsatoday
@nsatoday 5 жыл бұрын
Awesome to know. What’s your guess as to how long that sole will last assuming it’s worn everyday for work? I know there isn’t a definitive number, just looking for ball park. Also, was that Saphir greasy leather or just colorant?
@snellvilleshoerepair
@snellvilleshoerepair 5 жыл бұрын
nsatoday it is nearly impossible to tell how long a sole will last from one customer to another. Everyone wears footwear out different. I’ve seen cases where the soles last years. It is claimed that they last atleast twice as long as generic leather. Only thing I can say for sure is it will last longer! The recolorant is the Juvacuir for smooth leather.

I have a question. Don't laugh, hear me out. lol I have a pair of Dockers smooth leather dress shoes (close to 20 years old) that still look great but the heel is worn out. I admit they were in the $90 range but they are comfortable with little creasing. They have rubber soles and the heel is cast as part of the sole. The problem is the heel has internal voids in it and they are now exposed. (I found acorns lodged in them..haha). Is it totally impossible to remove the heel (sand it off?) and nail a replacement heel back on? Is it possible to remove the rubber sole & heel and attach a replacement sole? It may not be possible, which I would understand, but my local cobbler absolutely refuses to even talk about a repair. He say's "Nope" end of conversation. If he could/would say something to the effect that a)pulling the sole off would destroy the shoe or b)there's no glue strong enough to hold the sole on or c)stitching isn't possible because of...……. would help me move on and buy a new pair. Could you give your take on it? Thanks for videoing and posting your good work.

@@snellvilleshoerepair I hear you. I didn't see anything wrong with the wood in those Boots. But if that's the case then why are most quality boots still using them and highend resole places use them ? Something doesn't add up Brother.

@snellvilleshoerepair 3 жыл бұрын
CHRISTOPHER LILES it’s just a matter of preference. There’s also more than meets the eye. On a new construction it works well. When resoling a boot and not replacing the footbed the wood pegs have less material to hold to cause there was already the previous rows of pegs, so more holes, less hold fast. I perfer and trust the brass nails. There’s nothing wrong with either. I do both everyday. Just from my experience. I’m plenty willing to use lemon wood pegs if that’s what the customer wants.

CHRISTOPHER LILES yes sir! I’ll have to make a video where I only wood peg. On my most recent Lucchese video I did one row of pegs and one row of brass nails. Good restoration. Maybe the owner will actually take care of them this time around, lol! Would have been nice if you had used lemonwood pegs instead of brass nails, however. The wood would expand/contract at the same rate as the leather when wet.
@snellvilleshoerepair
@snellvilleshoerepair 5 жыл бұрын
rweb82 haha yeah! Wooden pegs are used more towards the making of boots while nails are used in the repair and recraft of them. However a lot of manufacturers use wooden pegs, brass nails, and sometimes both in boot creation. We can certainly do the lemon wood pegs, I have them, it just is a lot more costly for the customer. The nails hold a lot better overtime aswell.
@rickwebermusic
@rickwebermusic 5 жыл бұрын
@@snellvilleshoerepair Gotcha. Thanks for the reply/explanation! I believe my pair of Tecovas has a few brass nails in conjunction with the lemonwood pegs- 4 per boot > 2 on each side of the shank. Just out of curiosity, what makes lemonwood pegs better during the making of the boot as opposed to brass nails?
@snellvilleshoerepair
@snellvilleshoerepair 5 жыл бұрын
rweb82 a believe all of mine are wood pegged! They have changed a few things in the past couple years to provide a better boot. Ex. A plastic/ metal shank because the previous plastic only shank had the tendency to break. Wooden pegging is more of a classic historical way of making footwear. One way is not better than another. They both provide the same outcome. And I believe they hold equally aswell(if you use brass nails, not steel)Although some argue that the pegs make the boot more rigid and will swell and contract in moisture while the leather does, some say nails will loosen, rust and fall out over time but it is also possible that the wooden pegs do too. The wooden pegs are more work and time consuming so they are not always done in a repair aspect. Like anything else, everyone has their own opinion!
@snellvilleshoerepair
@snellvilleshoerepair 5 жыл бұрын
rweb82 if you’re wondering how wooden pegs are more work you have to individually drill each hole, glue each hole and peg, then hammer the peg in. VS. nailing a brass clinching nail in a single movement. Time is money!

Show the before and after with a split screen at the end of the video. Also, add an audio comment": "the benefit of this process is a new boot with a better fit than new because it has been shaped by the man who owns it."It's better than new boots because it's cheaper than a new boot and fits better. Pretty good video. Good luck.

Great job on the restoration. I was surprised with the color of those boots when they went in. Seems like poor tanning by the manufacturer

Please consider explaining a bit more about the products you use. Wax, what kind? Why? The liquid you use to care for the over all boot leather is what? Why France? What makes the difference? Please add a bit more to your explanation. You are rather short.

It’s called Saphir. They make tons of Shoe/boot care products. Wax, cream, conditioners. That’s a whole nother video in itself. There’s tons of videos about them on KZfaq for your viewing.
