Ted Williams did a movie back in the 1970s called "Ted Williams The Science of Hitting." You can watch it on KZfaq. You can hear it from himself what his philosophy of hitting is all about.

Ben Hogan is another who lost some of his prime years to the war. They were friends and discussed swing technique. Hogan had an extra spike in his trail shoe and said he pushed off that foot. He was also one of the very few golfers over time to finish their backswing during their forward movement similar to baseball. Tightening his windup an extra few cogs before unwinding from the ground up. He said to a few friends his secret move was that he would run his right knee at the ball after getting his weight onto his lead leg. But after a major car accident in 1949 he couldn’t load the lead leg as much.

Also watch the path of the knob of the bat those moves you described enabled an inside out swing knob slightly up similar to what Ben Hogan described in his book

I did some calculations years ago and I came up with 660 hrs, same as Mays.

It’s all about the spine. He’s using torque. His back foot releases and allows foward momentum. He lands closed (spinal engine) great watching the mechanics. Looks like my 10 year olds stance. Still working those mechanics though.

Ok Ted Williams in his early days turned to Lefty odoul take a look at Odouls swing his feet moving all over his front shoulder was up not down back back elbow down very level swing great line drive hitter but l think influenced by dead ball era BUT Ted Williams himself said if he were facing a hard thrower who kept the ball up he would raise his hands and sights ok but as l looked at him his overall approach seems to be to make the pitcher come into his zone where he can do the most damage good approach Barry Bonds of modern players had the same approach look at their walk to strike our ratio ok looking at it Babe Ruth Barry Bonds Ted Williams all looked similar but l think Ted Williams had a different approach maybe due to the fact that he hit left and threw right my father played for Lefty Odoul after WWII and said that when he hit infield practice he would put this perfect spin on the ball. Ok l think even in Ted Williams time hitters had to adjust to certain hard throwers look at what Hank Aaron said about that also Aaron hitting home run off Don Larson he was adjusting to a harder thrower you would think with all the relief pitching high heat etc players today would have adjustable swings woul like to hear Miguel Cabrera on that subject

Man, my sons swing is just like this. He’s built exactly the same damn way. But his elbow continues to race inside. Any ideas for fixes?

Joe Morgan also had this problem, so he flapped his back elbow like a bird to remember where his elbow is supposed to be. I think the dancing elbow are a sign of anxiety to hit a ball, so it's just a matter of experience.

I like these videos of old timers swings being analysed, but even as studied as Ted Williams was, he swung based on how his musculature and skeletal makeup allowed him to. It's not realistic to try to apply some of the granular aspects of his swing to....say....a young hitter with a completely different musculature and skeletal design. Example: a young hitter with a Kirby Puckett build isn't going to be able to apply some of the minut granular elements of Ted Williams' swing.
