I decided to do the Khan Academy Math program from the very bottom for the heck of it. Started with early math. Stuff is time consuming to work through. Right now, I am almost done with early math and onto the kindergarten stuff. lol Thing is, even though I can get the answer without using the videos, I find my speed at reading the word problem and solving it quickly improves. Starting from the bottom is certainly a good warmup, but I am curious how much better my math skills will become being I stopped at Calculus.

Unfortunately, if you're in a public school, you're teacher's hands are bound to uphold the status quo. Private school teachers might be able to do something about it. Really, it is the administrators who need to watch it.

This is very correct. The teacher's cannot change the system. It's the people who administer this system; it's the district boards. I'm quite sure 80% of teacher's acknowledge the fundamental issue in the system. Private school is sadly the only option that can change this issue because they are the ADMINISTRATORS of the system. Coming from a background of terrible math skills (ave. low 70s and I worked VERY hard for that) to accessing a private school teacher who tutored on the side changed my entire life. He filled all the gaps of knowledge that I had in mathematics. I saw an improvement of low 70s to high 80s in the matter of a semester. I entered my undergraduate degree in physics and I have the highest GPA in my year. All of this happened due to someone understanding the flaws in the educational system and helping students that have been affected by this system. The educational system fails to allow all students to tap into their potential and thus dwarfs the intellectual capital of society.

This is very true. I'm a maths teacher but I have a limited time to get through all of the content, I can't ask the exam board to move the exam because students are struggling with fractions or ratios. We need to move to online testing that can take place at any time. That way whenever a student is ready they can take the assessment and they can take as long as they need to get there.

Berlin Lincoln My personal ideal would be some kind of open learning center, where everyone can select from a variety of courses, regardless of age and income, fitting his/her personal interest or enabling to find new places of interest. Simple grades in the current environment are horrible, because they are just "quality of product" stamps designed for employers to better select their workforce. For children they serve better to DE-motivate than motivate. Surely you need quality standards, but they should be independent of age. You see I have no clear idea of what to do, I'm no educational scientist or smth. I just see the current form schools tend to have as dehumanizing and creativity killing.

Well... i don't think anyone can learn anything it depends what they're naturally good at and we're all born better at some things than others we get some things MUCH better and it's because of a number of factors from upbringing, to genetic factors, to how we percieve things someone who is genetically 1 footed, slower and clumsy they can't be an athlete they'd be really bad at it and for other types of jobs it depends what we're all individually inept to, id love to believe we could learn ANYTHING but truth is if the parents don't even try to build on skills with them too and just leave it to the education system like they do now then it still hugely changes what we're good at but of course no... parents shouldn't have the right to choose what we should do either but even their influence, what they're good at themselves, the upbringing they make us live it's all variables in the equation. I'm good with computers and technology because my dads always taught me about these things i was at 5 i was playing the Snes and using TVs, at 6 using computers playing kids learning games, at 7 RPG games and already kind of experience internet through Dial Up even if it never worked lol and i learned how to use Windows, i'm good at singing and with some aspects of music because my dad is good with music too (although hugely neglected), he used to play the guiltar and sing and a few people on my dads they can play the guiltar and sing too so that came from genes i'm just a natural singer, i'm not athletic or good at sports but i think i move better for Martial Arts i have the right personality for it too and again my dad used to do Judo when i was younger so again genes :P so it shows that we can't at all do ANYTHING it's not at all a negative mind set it's just fact for SO many reasons.

The public school environment is not for everyone. Clearly there are more people who fail in that environment yet who are more than capable of mastering the material.

Sarah Harvey That is, in my opinion, up to the teaching style. If you ask the students memorizable questions and only teach them enough to memorize and don't go in depth at all and don't test critical application, then that's what you'll get.

it's just the fear of failure tht stops us thinking like tht but really these Khan academy and stuff really helps us going over tht fear and lets us know how beautiful those things are which are taught to use . this can revolutionize human learning

gotta be a lot sooner than college, go with grade school. by college many people already fell through their cracks, disregarded majors they could have been successful in, or chose not to continue their education because learning new/challenging things weren't for them.

I am currently a public school teacher who is part of group attempting to put this type of program into place. Trust me when I say that lots of people believe that it is the right direction for education, but the implementation of such a program is difficult because it is difficult to track results. There are lots of books on how it can be done, and there are lots of schools already doing it. Lots of obstacles, but in the end, I believe that it is what is best for the students in my classroom.

It makes me happy, if teachers watch this and then go away and change something in their way of educating the next generation. My mother is a teacher, I think I should really show her the vid...

Most of the people whom I praised for being 'smart' or a 'genius' always turn it down and explained that they are just recalling the concepts that they have learnt. These individuals find more content over projects and collaborative work where they get the opportunity to create!

'Hard work' is misleading, I used to get ~50% in school, and now in collage I get 90%-100% on average, why? because I'm doing things that I enjoy. is it sometimes a bit of work? sure, but 'hard work' makes it sound arduous, which it definitely does not have to be.

I have always been an amazing math student, awards for being best in my class almost every year, and during class, I always thought that the student that kept asking questions on the simplest ideas or said "I'm lost" after a teacher explained a two-step, single variable equation in high school was holding me back, that I could be much farther ahead if I wasn't stuck with students in my class like this, and I was thinking "Alright the system needs to change, just set higher expectations, the students that can't keep up will likely not succeed anyway, so just help the good ones" Yes I know this was rude, but my little brain back then thought this. Watching this video I realized, well, what if everyone DID have their own pace of learning be matched at school. The good students will be ahead and the students that are struggling will get the help they need
