A net-zero future is possible, but first we need to flip a mental switch to truly understand that we can stop the climate crisis if we try, says Nobel laureate Al Gore. In this inspiring and essential talk, Gore shares examples of extreme climate events (think: fires, floods and atmospheric tsunamis), identifies the man-made systems holding us back from progress and invites us all to join the movement for climate justice: "the biggest emergent social movement in all of history," as he puts it. An unmissable tour de force on the current state of the crisis -- and the transformations that will make it possible to find a way out of it.
Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at countdown.ted.com/sign-up

Al Gore has been the single most destructive person for climate science in human history.... his dumb and completely idiotic presentations have probabally encouraged more climates skeptics they are correct than any other single person on this planet.... the main reason is he has no actual clue at all of what he is talking about and simply rabbits "fact" after "fact" if real actual scientists had his platform... we would have stopped burning carbon ages ago... instead we had this doofus

In ancient Japanese traditional merchant's culture, they said " three direction good"; good for seller, buyer and environment. They haven't harm the environment and kill small retailers, ecosystem. We need to re-consider the importance of "three direction good", not only for one, or share stake holders but also for invisible multi-stake holders.

So what about the people that currently have to buy a new vehicle that uses a combustion engine because they can’t afford the expensive electric vehicles at this point in time? It seems like those people are screwed due to rising gas prices and already financing a vehicle.

@OntoBunny
@OntoBunny 2 жыл бұрын
That's a legitimate concern. However replacing all ice vehicles with electric won't solve the problem (though it would help). A real solution is to reduce waste by creating robust public transportation, and rebuild our infrastructure to encourage pedestrians and cyclists wherever possible. Make it so that owning a car can be optional in stead of a requirement. There's a lot more information about this on the KZfaq channel called 'Not Just Bikes'
@robertwilliamson3276
@robertwilliamson3276 2 жыл бұрын
@@OntoBunny I agree but I don’t think most would approve of more public transportation with the virus ongoing( and probably won’t end ). It’s also difficult for those that work miles away from work. I work 12 miles away from my job and can get there in 15 minutes driving. An electric bike would take me 30-45 minutes. On top of that you have to consider the elements when using a bike.

@TokenSelf
@TokenSelf 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertwilliamson3276 It's perfectly reasonable to have a used car (or used EV if you can get a hold of one) for when the weather doesn't allow riding an electric bike/scooter and for longer trips. Extending the life of existing cars is a solid way to lessen your environmental impact, even if you still have to periodically buy gas. Do try to use public transit and bike if it's reasonably safe though.

Nuclear is viable for a period of time. It’s too polemic to say it isn’t. Nuclear isn’t a permanent solution, nor is it a solution for unstable or dangerous nations (due to the ability to produce weapons), but it’s a *very good* solution for the next 75-100 years where we can finally move to a fully sustainable energy generation capability. Said another way: it’s the absolute best choice we have for now and we should just do it and also plan for its retirement. However, that makes for a complex statement and it’s difficult to get people to buy into planned obsolescence-except in this case, the future of the planet depends upon us having enough time to move to 100% green energy that has no negative byproducts. We just don’t have the storage capability to handle power loads at night time, for now. It’s just going to take time to get the battery and energy storage market up to speed, more time than we have. Right now, we have dips in energy generation at night and when the wind isn’t strong. We have to spin up gas turbines to make up the deficit due to that unreliability-because we have no real way to store excess electricity and thus nothing to pull from when there’s a deficit. We have to use nuclear to make consistent power until the time comes that we can store the green energy for access during low production times.

Funny, I haven't seen any young people chanting "We want multi-stakeholder capitalism!" To be clear, Gore does a good surveying our current ecological situation. But in failing to mention how indigenuous nations have enriched ecosystems for thousands of years, it's clear he doesn't understand the fundamental shift in world view that is called for. It's definitely not more capitalism-- in fact it's the polar opposite of the "nature-vs-human" worldview that he's putting forth here.

In fact, nuclear energy is the BEST alternative for a system to generate enough electricity with less climate impact. Energy production cost is NOT the only factor to consider. Because nothing is clean. There’s no scientific evidence to suggest that fossil fuels are damaging to the environment. But you should already know that. Your beliefs are certainly the result of years of work and research. Or do you believe everything you read...

Hi Mike, in case you sincerely asked the question - most folks i know who resist the change only resist it happening quickly. The economic shock of sudden change could lead to crazy amounts of starvation and war. Especially int he developing world. I'm no expert but that's the primary concern as I understand it. Not against the science of climate change - but the estimated rapidity of the change, the drastic nature thereof and the breakneck pace of the recommended changes that could have significant impact on human thriving or suffering.

The way to deal with climate change is to focus on the source: over population. We have the resources to support about 10 billion people, but the changes in the environment cannot be stopped or reversed without reducing the population and the damage it causes.

He wrote once about my country: "We learned, for example, that in some areas in Poland, children are regularly taken underground into deep mines to gain some respite from the buildup of gases and pollution of all sorts in the air. One can almost imagine their teachers emerging tentatively from the mine, carrying canaries to warn the children when it’s no longer safe for them to stay above the ground." - I was growing up exactly in the region he mentioned and I've never heard a bigger fake news. I can't check the rest of his 'knowledge', but for me it's truly difficult to believe in what he says.

Even making glasses for solar pannels,monitors on phones etc. need temperatures over 1000 degrees, how can you achieve that,how can you mine for materials? With Electrial drills powered by solar panels? You can drive for 2km with car with just few drops(150ml) of fuel,there is nothing that can replace fossil fuels completely in that efficiency.
