Legendary architect Renzo Piano -- the mind behind such indelible buildings as The Shard in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the new Whitney Museum of Art in New York City -- takes us on a stunning tour through his life's work. With the aid of gorgeous imagery, Piano makes an eloquent case for architecture as the answer to our dreams, aspirations and desire for beauty. "Universal beauty is one of the few things that can change the world," he says. "This beauty will save the world. One person at a time, but it will do it."

What's interesting is how calm and sensible he is and yet creates daring and beautiful buildings. Opposite of most architects.

@danielefabbro822 Жыл бұрын
When you reach that age you starts to be more calm and see more details than others. Your work is made better due better experience and dedication. Like to see an elder Japanese when he take care his bonsai. It's the same thing. Elders are wise. It's a matter of facts. 😤

Best part: "Real beauty is when invisible join visible coming on surface. And this doesn't apply only to art or nature. This applies to science, human curiosities, solidarity - that's reason why you may say "This is a beautiful person", "that's a beautiful mind". This is a beauty that can change ppl in better ppl by switching a special light in their eyes. And making building for this beauty makes cities better places to live. And better cities makes better citizens. This universal beauty is one of the few things that can change the world. Believe me, this beauty will save the world. One person at the time, but it will do it. " (c) Renzo Piano

@@TimSlee1 Architecture and buildings are not only about big gray concrete blocks. In fact if you do a little research you might surprise yourself that not all construction involve concrete blocks. And speaking of beauty, don't you think the idea varies from person to person?

@@TimSlee1 I really don't understand what gives you the idea that Architecture is 'TRASH' or anything like that. Then I must say you haven't seen much of Architecture that'll produce the sense of beauty in you. Just like I said it's not all about concrete blocks. Maybe do some research next time

I think it's amazing how someone can talk so passionately about architecture; something perceived as generally boring in my age category. However, it is the passion that hits you exactly right. I love how TED talks enrich my way of thinking by means of such videos. Some videos are about business, economics and other hard things, while some (like these) are very soft and just trigger the mind to become something better than it was the day before. Thanks TED And above all, also thanks Renzo. Your passion/story is inspiring

@TimSlee1

There is no wisdom here! True wisdom is understanding that beauty can only be achieved through a certain set of rules of symmetries and proportions. Wisdom is understanding that beauty comes from nature. Wisdom is understanding that the Sacre Coer cathedral is objectively more beautiful than any ugly concrete abomination or social high rise complex. Wisdom is understanding that one must apply a certain set of skills to achieve beauty, to be a good artist. Wisdom is understanding that not everyone can be a great artist. There's some fucking wisdom!

Tim Slee then we should just stick to the classical architectural treaties forever and ever. If it is so simple, why don't you do that yourself and become the best architect of your era? Someone who knew how to wisely marry timeless aesthetic principles with the reality of his time into buildings was Louis Kahn. Maybe his architecture you would like.
@user-ly1fk9kk9d
@user-ly1fk9kk9d 4 жыл бұрын
@@emiliorumbead8926 Modernism is the first architectural style that is so controversial, that just can't be embraced by a big part of the population. We didn't have to deal with this problem in classicism, renaissance, neo-classicism. Most of the population can see an old classic building as beautiful(this is why historical cities invest so much in old-towns), but a modern building divide the opinions in 2. One of the most important role of an architect is to find the objective beauty and use it so that the vast majority will be satisfied, modernism as a style just fails in finding this objective beauty(except very rare exceptions that most of the time ignore the base definitions of modernism, using details and equalising at least a bit the form with function). And modern/avant-garde buildings wouldn't be a problem if they were separated in their part of the city, but this doesn't always happend(the best example being the centre Pompidou) "more good is the enemy of good" this is very important.
