Our refugee system is failing. Here's how we can fix it | Alexander Betts

A million refugees arrived in Europe this year, says Alexander Betts, and "our response, frankly, has been pathetic." Betts studies forced migration, the impossible choice for families between the camps, urban poverty and dangerous illegal journeys to safety. In this insightful talk, he offers four ways to change the way we treat refugees, so they can make an immediate contribution to their new homes. "There's nothing inevitable about refugees being a cost," Betts says. "They're human beings with skills, talents, aspirations, with the ability to make contributions - if we let them."

In this riveting talk, Alexander Betts gives pragmatic solutions to the Syrian refugee crisis. Persuasively argued, expertly analyzed and wonderfully presented, his ideas--4 in total--shows how the humanitarian issue to be handled in a humanitarian manner. I personally feel, my country and China together can handle easily 1 million refugees. Let's our politicians think differently to stop this menace.

***** what world r u living in ? The mainstream media is spouting exactly what this video is saying .. let them refugees in .. Its the opponents to refugees who are being demonised as racists by the mainstream media while turning a deaf ear to the validity of their arguments .. .. and frankly saying, I have not heard one racist comment from people who opposes the muslim refugees -- they are not against the skin colour of the refugees but the toxic mindsets and vengeful hate coming in ..

Sasataf ..cont'd And quite frankly, there is simply no way you can convince me that muslims are going to stay docile when it come an opportunity to exert their beliefs on non-muslims ... Every single country in the world where muslims accounts for a significant portion of the population, they demand their Sharia Laws and biased treatments at the expense of non-muslims. Non-muslims can forget about equal rights .. I just don't believe that muslims will not impose their sense of "Sharia" justice on my head when it comes time to vote for issues such as .. .. freedom of speech, women's rights, inheritance laws, freedom of beliefs, fairness of treatment on differential beliefs, abortion, gay marriage, non-bias treatment of religions and non-religions .. .. no way, because I'm not a dodo..

Sasataf Indonesia .. how can you mention Bali like its a wonderful place without referencing the Bali bombing of westerner's tourist spots in 2002 and 2005 .. Both attacks were perpetrated by Islamists .. And more recently, Islamic vigilante groups have actively pressured the government to shut down other religious groups for being different from their own doctrines ... In Brunei recently, after the King implemented the Sharia law, Christians were forbidden from even putting up banners or decorations to celebrate Christmas .. I think you may be a little bit too optimistic about the world we live in and about the intentions of some social groups ..

+Sasataf oh. Let me tell you that his statements is not taken from imagination! When the refugee inflow was at its highest last year, only ~30% of that inflow was people coming from war zones, even less from Syria. This "crisis" have created a larger migration from Afghanistan than it was during the actual wartime there. Most of the "refugees" are actually migrants just benefiting from the situation. Most do not care about an integrated society. And no this is not some made up bs, by now its very, very easy to stumble upon the official reports covering this, by doing some quick searching.

For those comments who just hate on this video, try proposing solutions instead. It takes brave conversations such as these that propose solutions with backed up facts that foster innovation, which helps everyone of all classes. Step aside from the negativity and start to creatively problem-solve. Insults are a sign of idiocracy. Brainstorming solutions are the wave of the future. Get with the program or get lost in the dust.

The problem here is that the citiziens of Europe have already been in contact with immigrants that has been badly integrated and are acting out so the feeling towards them are at an all time low. If the goverment would just have thought out a way to intergrate them naturally instead of just taking in as many as they can (talking about Sweden here) just to keep up an act that they are helping is just a fools game. If the goverment cant think of a way then this will just spin out of control until something really bad happens.

+blabla62871 no it's not and it's not crazier than any other religion. it depends on your interpretation of what stands in a religion's holy book (bible, quran and so on) whether a religion is crazy or not. as in every book you can interpret it in any way you want to and turn around the whole meaning in the way you want to to make it look the way you want to. so if it says you should spread the word you can say it tells me to kill everybody who doesn't believe in it so I'm going to do this in the name of my religion. And believe me if they wanted to spread their religion they would have done this in another way and not by seeking asylum...

+Sasataf Most refugees coming through are not of Syrian ancestry, most syrians actually settled in Turkey, even with deteriorating conditions. Most syrians have become anxious and angry due to other 'economic migrants' pushing thru and getting to their locations in Europe using the Syrian civil war and the world's empathy to get into these countries abusing social programs. Also if you look into how muslim's have integrated in these countries such as Britain and Belgium, they have separated themselves, which in turn causes new generation muslims turn to hatred/radicalization as they don't understand why people dislike, why police won't come to their areas, why are we separated from their new fellow countrymen? I don't know the answer to help them all, I was/am still in favor of establishing safe zones in syria, work with assad and monitor elections to determine whom to be a leader. But this is almost impossible now due to extremists, such as ISIS and Al-Nusra that would rather die then give up their power.
@Sasataf
@Sasataf 8 жыл бұрын
+KIrbyTheFlrst Whether they are Syrian or not isn't the point. There are other regions that suffer from conflict. "Most syrians have become anxious and angry due to other 'economic migrants' pushing thru..." Can you provide proof of that statement? "Also if you look into how muslim's have integrated in these countries... they have separated themselves..." If you look at how ANY ethnicity have integrated into ANY country, where there are large enough numbers, they will often form their own community. That is why you see Chinatowns in many cities. As well as Little Tokyos, or Little Havanas, or Little Indias. They have every right to settle in areas with their own people. "...which in turn causes new generation muslims turn to hatred/radicalization as they don't understand why people dislike..." Proof of that statement? "...this is almost impossible now due to extremists..." So fight the extremists. Don't punish the refugees who don't share the extreme views of extremists.

Mason Wong We can't just judge a huge group of people based on a minority that commit crimes. Just because a few idiots molest women in Germany, doesn't mean the women and children, skilled men that could be an asset in the UK don't deserve help. (and let's face it, our NHS is pretty much run by foreigners because we don't produce enough doctors of our own) These are people that could potentially save yours or your family's lives later on down the line. We can't just leave them to drown in the ocean, and there's no use in being patriotic ("this is our country not theirs") because the UK is fucked either way... Our own government is riddled with corruption... Tax dodgers and pedophile rings that think only about themselves and their wealth, we don't mean anything to them so we should look out for one another, especially those from countries that our own governments are turning into inhabitable wastelands.

I'll be honest, there are huge problems with his suggestions, such as financing problems and cultural clashes. Yet, the use of refugees in employment if done right should be great, but again, it has to be done right, so that the job places of citizens aren't compromised. Therefore, the Ugandan example is practically likely to work only in low income countries, where people seek drastic increases in business activity, thus seek employment. Might not work for HICS, which will employ refugees for being "cheaper labour", harming citizens taking up a smaller proportion of workforce compared to refugees. .

In Egypt, after the past years events in Syria, the number of syrian people has been really increasing. I'm not sure if they're refugees or normal travellers who decided to settle here but syrian restaurants are everywhere now. They have more types of cheese than we Egyptians have, they introduced new dishes, and new scrumptious desserts as well. Syrian restaurants and grocery stores really excel here! They opened shops in other fields as well such as carpentry and others but they're most famous for food, at least for me. I have heard some heartbreaking stories about people who lost everything after having had a blooming business and had to restart from zero in Egypt. Trying to imagine all of the Syrian people, I met, not being able to work is petrifying.

I think, giving some kind of help to people in tough situation is not good for the host countries. It is a work, that if something bad happens to you, whereever you are, you still have some hope for getting better and not to be sure you will and up like a trash next to the road. That there is a way out of the deepest problems, even if they would wash you away, there are people in better situations and they do something for you. And next time, you will be the one, who does something for someone else. But if something happens to you, you don‘t have to be that afraid of not existing anymore...

I can't believe some of the comments on this video. I understand that this talk may have crossed into the zone of political issues but that doesn't mean that we disregard the reality of the situation. Let's not blame the victims for not fighting back or resisting. But let's try to see them for the people that they are. Because they are just people who ended up in a terrible situation with hard choices. I don't think that it is a political issue to try and present them with better options. I think that its a humanitarian issue or just a humanity issue.

he doesn't seem to get that the refugees are tens of millions of people. If it was so easy to go to Europe, then everyone would do it. Also, it is really expensive taking care of refugees in Europe or any other place for that matter. Solving the ISIS problem and improving the living for refugees is clearly the way to go.

I just want to ask, where are all these money going to come form? I understand that refugees should be helped, but with what he is proposing, they probably won't want to go back to Syria. Giving them this, they would just become something like "legal" immigrants - they won't be a European citizen, but they will have all the perks, but without the need to pay taxes, or some of them even work - they would just get everything from some plan like this. What will be the point of them going back?!
@finfan7
@finfan7 8 жыл бұрын
Interesting ideas. Hard to see what the knock on effects will be if they are applied but only the fourth really is about one of the real issues. The first three are about combating symptoms of the general exclusion of refugees, holding them at arms length. Refugees are excluded because they are outsiders and human tribes are always leery of outsiders. If you want refugees to be accepted you have to turn them into immigrants and then get the locals to stop being so belligerent and accept them as they naturalise. Hard to fight something that deeply ingrained though, especially on the society level.

+banquo I believe that is the least of problems. The biggest problem is what is beneath those dislikes, that people do not listen to what he has to say with an open mind but instead immediately comment/dislike/like/click off based on their mere presumptions. The comment section is full of very short comments sparse on any form of intellectual consideration of the actual contents of this video. That is the saddest thing.

Those are relatively reasonable ideas this man has. Two things to point out however. First, everything he proposes is based on the assumption that all refugees without exception are hardworking peaceful people who just want to contribute and integrate - definitely not true. Second, he builds his arguments partially on the need for solidarity on the part of Europeans but says nothing of the rich states in the region who have taken very few refugees. If Europeans have a duty to show solidarity to these poor souls, then surely this duty should be even stronger for nations who actually share a language and culture with these people. In summary, this is the problem with this whole debate between the pro and anti refugee camps - oversimplification. For the anti, every refugee is a criminal; for the pro, every refugee is a peaceful hardworking innocent woman with children. The truth is much much more complicated and these fairytale solutions that Alexander is proposing are simply not realistic.

Simply put: Asylum seekers should apply for the possible safe country from their homeland, not as late as after randomly travelling across the Europe and finally arriving to a random country. Every country knows their limits how many asylum seekers can they take, but because of this current system some areas get heavily overcrowded, and it creates discord between the countries since someone will be getting a bigger share out of their will. So yeah, get a bunch of byrocrats in Syria, and provide a safe way of transferring people. I know little about economics so saying nothing about that part.
