how about you guys adopt the meter before you try to normalize how the world codes their adresses? good talk tho, not much technical detail on how its done, but nice messages.

This is a good reason for why I think we should educate American citizens more widely on programming, so they are able to use big data like this easily and without requiring a go-between who knows how to handle it. Then anyone could use this data to make their own conclusions and create their own evidence to support some argument, empowering them to not just file a complaint, but address public issues themselves as Ben Wellington did.

His conclusion that rush hour is from 8AM to 6PM based on average taxi speed can probably be attributed to when taxi's pick up the most people. Taxi's probably pick up the most people between 8AM and 6PM which means that the average speed will be low since they are stopped quite frequently.

The data is only after someone is picked up. So all data points are for taxis with passengers.

The pdf issue is honestly more complicated and subversive than what this makes it seem like. In these conversations, we need to recognize that corporate model which is at play. By becoming a de-facto standard, Adobe created something which can be monetized, and they do this by locking down the tools which allow for better automation - putting them in more expensive versions of their software. In fact, I would wager that some of the scripts that extract data from pdf files referenced in this talk are technically illegal. Considering that public data is treated in this way, that's clearly constitutes antitrust case of some type. People don't get data from a pdf by a standard, they get it by hacking. Considering that updates can change the encoding algorithms on the fly, then we clearly have a problem of legality in the deployment of the format.

This is what all government installations should be doing from the biggest to smallest item. As we speak, here in the US we don't even keep data on how many people police kill a year. You would think that would be important enough to do.

I wish there was a way to grab data and put it into a spreadsheet automatically, I was tasked with sourcing all coaches contact information for NCAA Division 1 and 2 Men's basketball teams, took me nearly 30 hours to complete it. If I had a way to grab that data automatically I wouldn't have had to spend anywhere near that amount of time. I'm all in favour of making life easier for collecting data!

That's something a computer could do in seconds if you knew which software to use. GoodData is worth taking a look at if this is a frequent problem. They crunch big data and make pretty reports with it. It's pretty awesome. I'm talking millions and millions of entries.

youtube has speed controls, just make it faster yourself. ;) (ok slowing down talkink people usually sound kinda drunk and uncomfortable, also a 0.75 speed option would be good)

***** resolution and speed can be changed with the little gear-button next to the buttons for "watch later", subtitles, theater mode and fullscreen mode. why change playing speed? because there are plenty of slow speakers on the world and my time on earth is limited. (because i will go to space ;) )

sofias. orange Thanks for the replies. But i don't seem to have any option to change speed.. i just have(from left to right) watch later, the gear button for reso, cinema mode, and full screen. Where is the playing speed 'button' or whatever meant to be? Also don't seem to have subtitles. Is it only meant to be for certain videos(like subtitles), or the speed thing is supposed to be on every video?

***** the speed option is inside the "gear button for reso" but it may not work on certain browsers like firefox (it works in chrome)
