Cities designed like families can last for generations. Skeptical? Look to master architect Liu Thai Ker, who transformed Singapore into a modern marvel with his unique approach to sustainable urban design. Liu shares creative wisdom and perspective on how marrying a humanist heart, a scientific mind and an artistic eye creates a resilient marriage of form and function. A talk that both humbles and inspires.

What amazing and versatile advice - “I’d say you just have to remember three things: To have a humanist’s heart, a scientist’s head, and an artist’s eyes” - Liu Thai Ker

This is a stepping stone, no more no less, in the short and long term, he challenged the status quo and won. The lessons of history, this is a reflection of his determination and good intentions, his life works will stand the test of time ? The ripple effect will echo and quality of life was the pillar. He is an original human inspiration via his own words and deeds, The city that embodies his inner truths. I admire the resolve of his spirit. Singapore has bragging rights for life. Epic ! True stories are the best. Thank you - Liu Thai Ker. You are a unique human being. I thank you for your insights and sharing your wisdom. I will remember your words.

It bugs my mind to think that if one nation could do it, why can the rest learn from it and do it too??!!! I mean, housing for everyone? Sustainable? Accommodates for the future?? This man should be hired to desing every city!!

With the over-politicizing of any and all ideas (new and old), good luck trying to propose this to North Americans lol. They also seem to base their decisions on opinions instead of facts.

Hiring him for sound advice may not much of a problem. But the social-political will and all sort of embedded bureaucracies really are.

11:43 "We mustn't turn a city into a theme park." That resonated with me so much, since I've seen my city change SO much in the last 10 years to accomodate more and more tourism, while the people that actually live here have their life disrupted.

What I would want in my town is warm places to participate in choirs and various small-time music concerts. Everywhere is freezing that caters for this sort of activiity apart from one place. 🥶

I love the end and the talk :) but i don’t understand why we should create a city for the « average » person divided per age group : because everyone is different so you may be a young adult and have the same interests as someone who is 80 and/or someone who is 20 but if you live in an area wich is made for the caricatural 20yo you won’t develop those unique interests or ideas , I think it’s very important to be amongst a variety of people of different age groups that’s how innovative people thrive and evolve … what do you think ?? :)

Very skeptical, just ask the people who live there and they will tell you a different story. For those who are too lazy, it is starting to feel overcrowded so either the design failed or the Government failed to adhere to the design rules.

HDB flats have indeed shrunk over the years. And what you see in new estates is a lot of ultra high rises, as compared to older neighbourhoods like Toa Payoh and AMK where flats are not as high (more long horizontally), there's shops on the ground floor of flats and there's more street space. In newer neighborhoods like Sengkang you see the flats are super tall vertically but not long, so they don't have the floor space for mixed uses like having a coffeeshop under your block. I might be biased because I stay in AMK but I feel like the newer neighborhoods have no soul. I also have a friend who stays at Dawson which people keep praising as a next gen of HDB but I really hate. Too many people!
