I wouldn’t call them a “starter watch”. What they are, are watches that are as accurate as it gets, and are more durable than anything else on the market. They may not have the cool factor of a high end automatic, but inasmuch as telling time, and being bombproof (metaphorically speaking) they are the cream of the crop. But they do have their own Kryptonite: bug spray with DEET.

In the Air Force, I flew with my father's Hamilton A-11 watch my entire career and had it rebuilt several times over the years, but I will say the last few years I was flying bombers most of the aircrews were wearing G-Shocks and I will admit it is a damn good watch, I would say almost a perfect watch, it is tough and reliable. Right now I wear a Casio Duro because I gave my A-11 to my son when he graduated from Air Force pilot training.

I love Hamilton’s. My first suit watch was a Hamilton which was a gift from my brother. It was the Hamilton Jazzmaster, he also got me a gshock so I could wear the rugged Gshock when I was going biking, hiking or camping and I could wear the Hamilton on dates, or interviews. Hamiltons and G-shocks are two Must-haves for any young man just starting out.

I’m quite new in the watch collecting scene, and I wasn’t really a G-Shock guy, but took the plunge on an affordable entry-level black CasiOak a few months ago. I’ve had 4 G’s in my adulthood: not once has the battery lasted 10 years 😂 but I have literally grown into the habit of only wearing G-Shocks when I travel, and using their back light as an actual mini flashlight to navigate hotel rooms in the middle of the night. My first watch was a GShock Gw6900 I'd bought for lifeguarding in college . Got me into watches and the entire game. I'm wearing my Casioak right now with a modded bezel and it still serves as my everyday beater among my various budget automatics. It is a true testament to the quality available for such an accessible price and still with such provenance in the field.

Casio is such an amazing brand. I'm planning on getting a Casio Duro and modifying it (replacing the glass with sapphire glass and replacing the band with a stainless steel bracelet). Essentially, I would theoretically be able to get a watch that runs on Japanese quartz, that just so happens to be of 200m water resistance and a watch that is supposed to be relatively durable thanks to the sapphire glass. All for the low price of roughly 80 USD.
@matts4450

@@Enthusiast230 love my Duro. Looks great on a Nato strap. Hadn't thought about modding it. A sapphire crystal sounds intriguing. I'm going for the Casioak to mod. I love the full metal, but whoa, the cost. Modding makes more sense and I can make it exactly what I want.

@@TheTrueHasenfeffer I've done a good amount of research on the various websites that do sell Casio Duros. I managed to find one that is selling a black Casio Duro, with a stainless steel bracelet for roughly 30 USD. This includes shipping by the way. The sapphire crystal costs 19 USD with free shipping. Theoretically I should be able to get a Casio Duro with sapphire and a stainless steel strap for 49.33 USD 😂. What I'm worried about is that it's a scam because it sounds too good to be true. However everything lines up. From the specs of the watch to the reviews.

Why G-Shock? 1. Because they allow you to assemble a collection on a budget. 2. They are respected all over the world 3. They are tough as nails 4. They keep incredibly accurate time 5. They come in an infinite number of styles, sizes, and colors to meet any occasion. 6. They are fun! 7. There are many G-Shocks groups where members can sell/trade 8. They are easy to service 9. They are widely available 10. Because good value never goes out of style.

Teddy, I can vouch for the toughness of G-Shock watches. I had the original in the early-mid 1980s when I was in the US Navy; I can't remember if it was the DW5000, but it was that shape. I was NOT easy on that watch! I used it for manual labor, working with air tools, handling missiles, standing watch, snorkeling, surfing, etc. It was dropped in paint, cleaned off with solvent, etc. NOTHING could kill that watch; whatever punishment I dished out to it, it came back for more! I've been a fan of the brand ever since. I now have a G7900, a GA1000, and a GA140; my next acquisition will be the GA100. I CAN'T WAIT to get it! As I write this, I have my GA1000 on; it's one of my favorites in my collection... :)

Owned many from the very first to my current fav the GBX-100 - slim, good looks, colour options and the most readable digital display from Casio to date. Great basic fuctions plus highly useful step counter and tide info. Other Favs are the dual analog/digital display models like the casioak. Its great to see Casio going deeper into this concept with some great new designs. I've owned others like the Frog/mudman etc but their just too bulky and thick to wear wth jackets etc, which is why I prefer my Tissot Touch - more legible, as light and so much slimmer.

Great video. Wanted to add that the Casioak GA-2100 is a great watch to mod. You can put the internals into a full metal body, from black, to steel, to rose gold (colour),. Chang the hour marker ring (maybe adding one with lume, or just more fun colours). Or, if you are comfortable doing so, changing the dial, and hands. The dials out there work with the ga-2100, ga-2110, and ga-m2100. They will fit the ga-b2100, with the tough solar, and Bluetooth, but as of now, have yet to see any with the correct markings on the dial. The ga-2100 has M, T, W ..S on the left for week days. The ga-b2100 does not use that area for the days. One last thing, some people find the white text on the black digital display hard to read. There are some models with black text on white, and if your eyes are not great, maybe worth looking at images of both, to see if you need one of those.

I would like to thank my father for introducing me to G-Shocks. As a kid that time I wasn't all that excited by it because it looked so big for my small wrist. Fast forward through the years it lasted more than my other watches the durability and its ruggedness it survived my kid years and early adulthood. I still keep and use my first G-Shock and people are intrigued it looks old and been through a lot but it still works as good as the day it was bought. Over a decade of use and still very tough Casio makes them very well.

Got into collecting a couple years ago and bought my first ever mechanical watch (had a couple no name $15 watches when I was a teenager), a Seiko Recraft SNKN37. Loved it! ...then it got scratched while wearing it at work(I do roadside assistance change flat tires/replace batteries etc)🤦 Bought a G-shock the next day! Greatest work watch ever! The hourly chime helps keep the time in my head. The alarm reminds me when to sign on/off. The auto light helps since I work at night. Just turn my wrist to check the time and it lights up without me having to push a button. Solar powered, so I never need batteries. Just set it in the window when I get off work. I don't keep my phone on me when helping customers so when doing paperwork, I have the date readily available without having to grab my phone. All these tiny little advantages really add up day after day.

Had the basic $40 square for years. Used it to time starts in sailboat racing and also as a general beater watch. Eventually the strap started to crack so I decided to upgrade. After snooping around the net I built a MR-G clone for ~$300 - solar, multiband 6, titanium case and bracelet. Now I can't hardly get it off my wrist. So light and comfortable. Classic chunky G-shock look in the dull luster of titanium. I very much like it.

One thing I love about my GA-B2100 is that the Bluetooth connection with my iPhone using the Casio app updates the current time zone when I travel internationally. As soon as my phone connects to the local cell network, I connect my watch, and the hands spin, and the date changes to match my location. More fun than a GMT!

My grail watch is actually the G-Shock GWG2000 Mudmaster. It is so advanced that the hands actually move out of the way when you want to access certain functions to make it easier to read said functions. How many other watches can do this? I had a analogue looking Festina years ago that could do that. It had a small dial with a small hand at the 6 o clock position that indicated which mode you were in, had 2 Alarms, a countdown, stopwatch, second timezone, a setting for calibrating the hands and the last function i can't remember. and the hands moved the shortest way to the next function (so not always clockwise but both ways). It also was very durable. But getting watchstraps for it every 2 years and no indication for when the battery died was what made me go look for something else. And what sealed it's "death" was that there were no replacement seals available anymore. (when the watch was 9 years old) A big advantage with G-shocks (or digital watches in general) is that you notice when the battery gets low. (My Festina just stopped wihtout warning. It ran precise until it stopped every 3 years and i hated that) I bought a G-Shock as replacement in 2007 and still have it (it still runs on it's first "10 years" battery!) But it gets very few wrist time as i switched to a mechanical watch. (a mechanical watch also never stops out of nowhere, and i like the thought that my handmovements are enough to power the watch and it needs no battery) But the G-shock still gets used as alarm clock each day.

@philm94 Жыл бұрын
I love my GWG2000 but do look at the 9400 rangeman as well if you just want the functions. For around half the price it does it all, and it's easier to use as you don't need to fiddle with the screw down crown to adjust settings. That said the GWG2000 is a beauty to look at and spends a lot of time on my wrist.

Thanks Teddy for the video. I own several Casios, including the AE-1200 (World Time) and D8C-32 (Data Bank/Calculator), but my first G-Shock was the classic DW series. Forgot the model number, but it was yellow and black, all digital with a bumper guard. Being young and unappreciative, I lost it somewhere. That was over 30 years ago. Early this year I got the MTG B1000 and love it in every way. And this Christmas I'm getting the all-metal Casioak (GM-B2100BD). My next purchase would be one of the full metal GMW-B5000 series. Well said Teddy. It was also refreshing to hear you recommend some budget watches too. Everyone can afford some level of G-Shock. I have owned digital G-Shock's almost my entire life (i was born in 1980, so since 1985-ish) and they've always been incredibly tough, especially if they could handle me as a wild and energetic kid that was constantly on the move 😂 However, as I got older I have always loved analog watches just because I can get a better sense of time with them. So my square digital G-Shock's were always delegated to be my work watches. A DW-5600E and a GW-M5610 with a Bull Bar make the absolute perfect work watch since I'm in the painting/construction business. But I NEVER used them outside of work because they weren't an analog watch!!! Fast forward to a couple of months ago when I decided i was going to try the new CasiOak. So I bought a GA-B2100-1A1 (Blacked Out) & GA-B2100-3A (Green), which are both Tough Solar/Bluetooth. Absolutely amazing watches. I love the analog part to tell the time, and the digital parts for everything else (date, day of week, dual time, stopwatch, timer, alarms, etc). It's literally the best of both worlds for me. But after owning and loving those for a few weeks, i wanted to step up to a G-Steel model, since I prefer metal watches and bracelets. After a TON of research, i decided on the GST-B300E-5A G-Steel. It has everything i wanted in an analog/digital G-Shock. Even the lugs are a standard size 20mm, so I can swap straps and bracelets EASILY and quickly. And on top of that, the lug holes are actually SS too, to prevent the holes from getting really worn. It's literally my perfect EDC watch and I'm honestly thinking about buying another one for the future just in case something ever happens to mine ✌️👍⌚⌚⌚ My ONLY complaint with the G-Shock's, and I can understand this because of their low cost, but I wish they ALL had SS lug holes to prevent the resin from getting so damaged if you change your straps a lot like i do. I simply CANNOT wear the resin straps, even for a second, because they're so irritating, so EVERY G-Shock i own, is modded with lug adapters and different straps. Except the GST-B G-Steel of course. If anyone is on the fence about getting a G-Shock, i totally agree with Teddy about getting the GA-2100 CasiOak Casi-Oak watches. They're very thin too. And something Teddy didn't mention, but G-Shock also makes the series of GMA-S2100 CasiOak's too, which are just a smaller case size, and will easily fit smaller wrists. So don't be scared off by their size. Now only if they'd release the ALL metal GM-2100 in the GMA-S size, which I hope they do in the future!!! I have a 7 1/4" - 7 1/2" wrist size, and even the much bigger GST-B300E-5A fits my wrist perfectly! It's pretty hard to beat an indestructible watch that's solar powered and automatically connects to Bluetooth, or with MultiBand 6, the Atomic clock in Denver, everyday. You can wear them for work (even in a high-end suit) and then out to play after work, seamlessly. I don't know of many other watches with that kind of pedigree. In fact, I'm thinking about selling my big Seiko and Citizen diver's watches (as well as a bunch of other titanium watches), and going big, like a MT-G or MR-G. I simply don't need anything else honestly.

I call G-Shocks the “Bro” watch, and for a good reason 🤜🏾💙🤛🏻 When I was in the Army, almost everyone in my units wore G-Shocks. I even got one, because, heck, when in Rome! Now I’m into watches and can see the quality and how they’re always getting better….PLUS…they allow you to customize like how Nike allows you to customize colors and even putting your own spin on names on the face of the watch. Good job being forward thinking, Casio 🏆

Eu sou completamente fã do G-shock. Recomendo demais!

I got into wearing watches working in warehouses, needing them to tell time at a glance. Nothing beats Casio as a warehouse watch with their accuracy, durability and easiness to read. The love I grew from wearing Casio wristwatches at work is what got me into collecting wristwatches. There’s nothing like the feel of wearing a good watch and knowing how much you enjoy that watch, its looks and your sentimental love and memories tied to these time pieces.

I'm totally on the train for these watches. I finally bought my first one back in March, a GM-2100C with the canvas strap and I love it dearly. Keeps great time, looks really cool and I know that in 20 years it'll still be kicking. I have plans to buy a G-Steel, the B600, because of the smaller size and the bracelet. I cannot wait to see that one in my collection!

Just got a GAE-2100RC (Casioak Rubiks Cube) from my son for christmas... they told me they were sold out and difficult to find but somehow he found some collector in Japan who was willing to part with it.. I grew up in the 70's / 80's and was a Rubik's cube nerd so I'm so happy with it. I have 10 casio's (mostly retro) and this is my second G-shock.. and from now on my favourite! I started to get into automatic/mechanical watches and bought two great seiko's, (cuz i'm not a gazzillionaire), but now with this awesome Rubiks Cube G-shock I think what will be on my wrist most of the time! .. Hi Teddy a great video again about Casio G-Shock watches. I really like Casio watches in general tbh and I have a few in my collection of watches of quite a few different brands. I wasn't keen on G-Shock watches at first because of the size of some models because I have a small size wrist. That was until I came across the 5610 models. I saw the negative display version first in a sale on Amazon UK and ordered it and obtained it for around £79.99. I really have enjoyed wearing the watch because of it being solar powered and also Multiband 6. Since that purchase I later purchased the positive display model and again it's a really good watch and of course very rugged and accurate which is ideal when I am doing military activities with the cadet forces I am an instructor with. Thanks again for this interesting and informative video. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I'm currently wearing a Casioak with the light grey hands and numerical markers. Really good watch. The color makes it really easy to read in all light conditions. I think it's a Japanese exclusive color but Amazon has it. It doesn't have solar but that's fine. I have some other watches that are nicer but those are reserved for when I'm going out and want to be more presentable. If I'm around the house or at work then a Gshock is my go to because I don't have to worry about it. I have the Casioak, and two LCD digital models with solar. Ones a 5600 variant and one had an aesthetic that just screamed 90s to me so I had to get it.

A great video Teddy as usual. Although I love mechanical watches like you I do not discount owning a watch that is quartz powered. I love the G-Shock brand to the point where I now split my collection to mechanical or analogue and Casio watches. Beware buyers of that 1st G-shock there will be more that you want as these super robust machines can be addictive. Brilliant watches that are very well made. Square, analogue, Bluetooth, solar, metal or resin I have time for them and they do get wrist time more than you might think

Again another great video ! I have owned a G-Shock since 1988, I have never been let down by one, i have never been "snobbed" wearing one, i believe i would laugh out loud if i was :) I have put my G-Shocks through military way of life ( very hard living ) construction ( almost abusive way of life ) and when members of the watch community assigns the title to Casio as GOD tier, i could not agree more. Yes i also feel watch collectors would be amiss if they don't have at least one G-Shock. My G-Shocks are my daily drivers, admittedly they do not "patina" like an old Rolex or Omega, but they do show hard wear pretty well. I have an older 6900 that has some excellent scars, it's seen more action than most.

Love G-Shocks. As much as I admire the craftsmanship of mechanical watches, if I could only own one watch, it'd be my GWM-5610 - square, light, 200 m WR, atomic timekeeping and Tough Solar - what's not to love? Everything you need in a watch for $100, more or less. Excellent video as always, Teddy. Happy Holidays!

I've bought couple of GShocks over the years, the one has the most wrist time is my CasiOak GAB2100. It checked all the boxes for what I need like it's thin for a GShock, tough solar, bluetooth & a bright LED. Having a multiband 6 is cool & all, but from where I live, it's next to impossible to find a signal. So bluetooth will do for me. As for LED, most Ana-Digi GShock light under $200 are as anemic. Could barely see the time in the dark. GAB2100 on the other hand has one of the brightest LED.

I've got 3 G-Shocks in my collection (a vintage DW-003, a GW-M5610-1ER and my all-time favorite, the GM-2100-1AER). For me, G-Shock represents the sweet spot between people who couldn't care less about horology but just want a versatile, everyday timepiece, and full-on watch enthusiasts. I started collecting watches in 2021, but even back when I was a kid and never heard of Rolex or Omega, I admired G-Shocks for their in-your-face designs and knew every model by heart. You're absolutely right: There really is a G-Shock for everyone!
