My high school biology students loved it--and most importantly it helped them remember the factors that speed up chemical reactions. I used it after teaching the concepts, and stopped it while it played to ask the students which dating method corresponded to each method (like shrinking hallways and higher concentration of reactants).

Thank you all for the comments and for pointing out the miscommunication of one of the concepts. In my mind, I was thinking "shrink the size of the container in a reaction of gases" and "use less solvent in an aqueous reaction" and in both situations, increasing the concentration as a result. I did not communicate that well in the script, nor to the animator. Teachers, please use my error as a discussion point in your classes to help prevent misconceptions. Thanks. -Aaron

Nevermind the chemistry part, the human interaction half of the analogy is really creepy. The moral of THAT story seems to be: a) schools should have much poorer conditions b) said conditions are likely to directly provoke anxiousness and conflicts c) teachers should pimp-out and date-match students d) the best way to score a date is to repeatedly crash into each other, increasing the force with which you do it with each try
@LeafyGreenDA
@LeafyGreenDA 9 жыл бұрын
Worse-case scenario, too, is dropping your load and having the creepiest/worst human try to assist you in gathering your belongings - possibly stealing something if you have quality loot - and then maybe even end up breathing down your neck for the next several years of highschool (or whatever educational facility... I'm not sure what target audience this was trying to appeal to...) Between the creepy as hell analogy, and the creepy animation, I'm not so sure if I like this video lol

SuckMyCockKZfaq Don't forget that it is counter productive, wouldn't social interactions decrease? If we look at population densities in cities. The more people there are in a finite area people tend to ignore everyone they don't know for connivence. If two people would collide in such an environment the the interaction would quickly and awkwardly gather the stuff apologies (if even that) and get the fuck out there.

+Ulquiorra Schiffer OMG, REALLY? You do realize that, for a metaphor to be effective, it has to make sense? The purpose of this video is to use allegory to make it easier for viewers to understand and remember the process, but if what they are offering as a comparative isn't really logical, how can said viewers be expected to associate all of this together at a later point in time, when they actually try to remember?
@Lashoun

This video is great, but I think that "matchmakers" needs to be replaced with "more corners" in the analogy. It makes more sense that way, because it increases the chance that two students will unwillingly collide; as long hallways give them the ability to see farther in front of them and anticipate collisions.

I take issue with point #1, decreasing the volume of the container will not increase the rate of reaction unless there is a corresponding increase in pressure. It's the increase in pressure that causes the higher rate of collision. This is especially true for liquids, compared to gases, because many liquids are incompressible and do not reduce in volume when pressurized.

matiasobera how that will turn out: they bump into each other and go there separate ways and not think about going to the dance together since they are the same gender. THE END

That's nuclear fusion, pal. Things'd need to get very hot and heavy for that sort of thing to go down.

This is great. I showed this to my class today. Is there any way to include same-sex couples into the analogy? Most textbooks cite "chemical nature of the reactants" as another factor affecting reaction rate. How about including this idea to bring in same-sex couples to be more inclusive. For instance, as the kids walk around the corner to collide, some pair up male-female, or male-male or female-female depending on the "gender preferences of the kids" analogous to the "chemical nature of the reactants". Thanks, great video|!

That's actually a great idea; but some chemicals have a "pickier" chemical nature than others. Do we make them racist, perhaps? XD

Not many interesting analogies for increasing rate of reaction. But there are going to be some ignorant people getting concussions because they tried to do this.

Great vid! - but should it not be conformation instead of configuration at around 4:19?Since the molecular configuration of a molecule is the permanent geometry that results from the spatial arrangement of its bonds and can't be change besides by breaking bonds.
