Explore the science of parthenogenesis, a form of reproduction which allows animals to develop an embryo without fertilization.
--
In 2021, workers at a Sardinian aquarium were stunned by the birth of a smooth-hound shark. What was shocking was that, for the last decade, the shark’s mother had been living only with other females. So, how was this birth possible? And can other species reproduce this way? Susana Freitas and Darren Parker explore the phenomenon of asexual reproduction known as parthenogenesis.
Lesson by Susana Freitas and Darren Parker, directed by Petya Zlateva, Compote Collective.

I saw a guy on youtube that makes mini biomes in tanks, and he added three female mourning geckos to his rainforest tank. Well, lo and behold, the three female mourning geckos cloned themselves and laid their eggs all around the tank. He didn't expect them to be fertile since there were no males but when he candled a few, the embryos inside were very clear and active, and a few days later they hatched and soon he was up to his neck (figuratively, not literally) in all these female mourning gecko clones. He had to make a whole tank just for all the mourning gecko babies. Edit: if you're interested here is the link to the entire rainforest biome building project: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7p4bNBnsqqtlpc.html and here's one specifically about the gecko cloning: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ldqefJN33Ke1e3U.html

I've always wondered about that, on what happens to genetic diversity of clones or organisms that asexually reproduce, because at a certain point wouldn't the population just accumulate genetic disability that could lead to their population decline
@stellar783
@stellar783 Жыл бұрын
But then why exactly would it? As long as one organism has multiple offspring those with compromising genetic structures would die out while the others would continue on or even thrive. Sure, there's less potential to pick up new genes (which might be needed, especially now in the current rapidly changing environment), but there's also less potential to pick up new *harmful* genes.

Should be noted not all parthenogenesis is the same and the young born are not always identical clones of the mother. In komodo dragons young born through parthenogenesis are always male and have the same amount of genetic differences from the mother as normal male offspring would. This is possibly an evolutionary adaptation based on island life, in which if a female made it to an island on her own or if something happened to the males on her island she is essentially making her own mates for the future.

so how come it doesn't happen in mammals? the only known instance of mammalian parthenogenesis was induced in mice and has never been documented in the wild. could it be because mammals give live birth? does it have anything to do with meiosis? are mammals just too genetically complex to pull it off?
@snakewithapen5489

Probably has something to do with mammals giving live birth, and the offspring being directly connected to the mother by bloodstream. If they're a genetic clone the body might do something weird like reabsorb the fetus or you might get some kind of auto-immune issue? While animals that lay eggs would be protected from that. I think some pathonogentic species rely solely on individuals having positive mutations or even net zero negative ones. Like that sounds incredible rare and unlikely, but that may also be doable given how easily a population can reproduce from this method. But essentially, so long as just one memeber maintains healthy DNA, the population could tolerate a lot of negative mutations that resulted, long term, in mass casualties. I think this is why Bees hand ants have queens. The rely on this unfertilized egg method a lot, but they basically all serve one individual with the "supreme key" of DNA and ensure she alone is safe above others in the hierarchy. Just a cool thought.

I think it’s more a lack of mutations at all. Both negative and positive. Especially the lizard lives in a really stable environment, so there isn’t necessarily a need to evolve.

Please do not patronize single parenting, kids like to have moms and dads! In the craziness of media imposing the woke agenda and parents confusing their own children and abusing them mentally, emotionally and physically, without thinking of their future, I am so grateful for having a beautiful happy healthy family. You can do it too :)

@@ExtremeMadnessXMy bad, apparently I was misinformed about this topic, I was told by my parents and the news (they are very conservative so I'm not sure if this is a politics thing or not) that -most- families weren't nuclear and the parents just didn't love each other, perhaps it was to convince me of something. I simply said what has always been told to me. I didn't mean to be offensive.
