The problem with studying history is that we only get the lives of people considered important enough to be documented- so we often know a lot about the history of the elite and upper class people in literate societies, but we don't get many documents about the lives of farmers and peasants and slaves. Archaeology is really important in that regard because while we might not have documents like tablets and books about their lives, archaeologists can reconstruct the lives of the lower class through artifacts.
