I've seen TTB several times and always love when when Derek decides its time to play an Allman Brothers song, but never heard them play Mountain Jam. What an amazing night for those lucky fans at this show : )

I think what people were seeing is the forced restraint Trey had to give in order to be seamless - first off he has the respect that its not his band - second off he has the respect that its legendary to the fans and the artists who originated the sound - thirdly he had to be just itching to shred his ever loving brains out in full Phish fashion but he couldn't because he's a humble professional - that is what I think everyone (including myself) commenting below is seeing and hearing. Imagine if they played together all the time yumpin' yimminies. In the past I've heard similar comments when Carlos Santana has played with Eric Clapton - two different styles - both great but when Carlos steps onto Eric's stage Carlos follows. Watch the inverse of that when Eric holds back and lets Robbie Robertson shine in the Last Waltz. It's what you do when you have outgrown your competitive jones to steal the spot light and instead serve the music. Well done Trey in a complementing role it had to have been tough not to freak out on the neck on such a juicy jam with such an awesome band and standing next to Derek! (My take)

Paul Burke I think you are spot on, and I felt the same when Trey played at Dead 50... there seemed to be a reverence, that he held back somewhat - which is I think is what makes Mayer such a fit, he just goes at it... imagine Trey letting it all out? Whewww.... and Derek is amazing, balls all the way out, the 2 of these guys together is almost too much but it’s super neat. I’m not a huge TTB fan but they flat out smoke. Really good. 🎸🔥✌🏻

Paul, those comments were excellent. One quick correction re The Last Waltz, Eric held back and let Robbie take the lead because his guitar strap came undone. The speed with which Robertson took the lead (in his own style) is one of the highlights of film. The two have always had immense respect for each other. There’s a lot of that amongst top musicians.

Derek has reached a comparable level to Duane Allman. His phrasing and emotion is coming through big time.

Steve Longobardi, about time the band him and Susan put together, is letting this happen, what I really like is that Derek is not using his slide as much, really showing his talent. Live Long & rock on...

Steve Longobardi you see that smile. Agreed

Personally I think he became his own entity. There's plenty of residual elements, but Derek has propagated out of ABB.

Man put me back in Union County Tennessee on top of them Blue Ridge mountains " Beautiful and Thank you very much. Me and Grandad ..... Two lead guitars going at once , only in the South. And I am Stuck up North. Thank you for taking me back .... I hear a mix of Almond Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd and all came from the old gospel ways with the old Generation pulling out the insterments and playing them gospel hymns. And some blues. I am the last and lucky to have seen and no what I am hearing and we're it comes from. Hay don't forget your#1 fan in Michigan , I am there every year. Thank you. That is a music from the soul. Love you guys and in prayers.

Just listened to this twice in a row...might put it on repeat for the rest of the work day. Two of my favorite guitarists on the same stage...doesn't get much better...only if Warren and Marcus strolled out and added even more layers.

Derek has his own style and different from the great Skydog . He has transcended and imo the best there is. Here is the first time I've ever seen him show emotion and that is a direct reflection on his idol, Duane Allman. Trey is great also and he is the player setting the path that Derek takes. That's why they click like no other duel guitarists.

The band leading skills of Derek Trucks is unmatched! It reminds me of Duke Ellington Back in his hay day, when he would give charts to different players, and tell them play this, during a live show. I would not have wanted to be Trey in this situation. At times he just seemed so lost, and you can't blame him

Bass used to be a huge part of this song, now its all guitars. They're obviously awesome, but Berry and Duane and Dickey and the rest of the brothers had the thing that made this song so good. Now its all glitzy guitars, and no deep end. I miss the bass, thats all I'm saying. But these two are fucking guitar god and its nice to see them jam this song the f out.

I love this! Though I think it's a waste for Derek just to try and recreate the Eat A Peach version of Mountain Jam. He's too great of a player just to be playing a cover of the old ABB. The reason that it's so beautiful when Duane goes into Will the circle be unbroken on that version (and it is the most beautiful thing that's ever been played in my opinion) is the because of the spontaneity of it. Who would think to put a psalm at the end of a thirty minute jazz driven rock jam? Only Duane. And even though it's so unbelievable, the rest of the band picks it up like nothing! Probably because of the times they played that song together in a ring with their families, because of the brotherhood. I'm not saying any version of Mountain Jam that Derek attempts won't be good. I'm just saying he should do it like it was meant to be, a spontaneous jam! He's way to good to be playing other people's solos! He's as good as Duane when he does his own thing!
@TheSammyreynolds4 жыл бұрын
Why can’t people like you get through you thick skulls. He passed Duane a long time ago.
@allanbriggs90075 ай бұрын
I've seen Derek play this in many different ways. He has a couple of versions with Haynes. And this is a short version. At 8 mins it is just a taste. When you get to 33 or 44mins is when you start to see the real "Jam" aspect of the song
