Nipun Mehta is the founder of ServiceSpace (formerly Charity Focus), an incubator of projects that works at the intersection of volunteerism, technology and gift-economy. What started as an experiment with four friends in the Silicon Valley has now grown to an global ecosystem of over 350,000 members that has delivered millions of dollars in service for free. Nipun has received many awards, including the Jefferson Award for Public Service, the President's Volunteer Service Award and Wavy Gravy's Humanitarian award. He is routinely invited to share his message of "giftivism" to wide ranging audiences, from inner city youth in Memphis to academics in London to international dignitaries at the United Nations. He serves on the advisory boards of the Seva Foundation, the Dalai Lama Foundation, and Greater Good Science Center.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This was an extraordinary sharing which can come as a tangible for our psychological, physical, social, financial and ecological problems. It is hard to feel depressed if you feel like you belong meaningfully in a larger context.

Awesome, awesome talk. I'm a believer in eliminating the extremes of wealth and poverty. As a part of that belief, i believe that the wealthy should renounce voluntarilly part of their wealth. However, i had never seen a practical way for it to happen. This talk solves it brilliantly. Thanks and blessings upon you and your endeavours.

Love this so much - the BONDS between us have value - this is true in community and in ecology, the web of life. It is what really do lose when we have 'transaction' culture, rather than interaction culture. This is a beautiful talk.

Thank you very much for articulating and formulating concepts I have had an intuitive sense of since I was young... and have had difficulties finding ways to apply (in other than my individual way or within pre-existing spaces of limited scope). I feel inspired and empowered to continue following my aspiration toward living my life on a full generosity basis, not yet knowing how that will look or how it will work out. Hey, I already have plenty of experience with the dominant alternative, eh? Time to try another experiment.

Stupendous Speech ! It has Power to change your mind, the whole perspective towards Life. Generocity is Transactional, It gives you a 'high'. The feel good factor (that you have contributed to someone's happiness) is so great that money can not buy. Thumbs up Nupur :)

Thank you for reaffirming that we are all good, but sometimes we just don't see it in ourselves. There is enough for everyone's needs but not enough for everyone's greed. Goes along with "When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will live in peace." - Jimi Hendrix

Isn't that what China accuses the Dali Lama of? They think he is "acting" kind for his own selfish gains, but anyone who studies him seriously knows he is the real deal. I also know Nipun Mehta is the real deal.

Apart from a few 'feel good' stories, I didn't find much here. People may spend an afternoon or a few days, weeks etc volunteering in something they find rewarding, but I wouldn't want my life to depend on other people's generosity. Sure, someone might make me a free meal if I'm hungry, but I doubt they would go and spend 8 years learning to be a surgeon so they can operate on me after a car crash. PS = I wonder if the lecturers at Berkeley would consider working as unpaid volunteers. No sale :(

Thumbs up if you couldn't understand a single thing this Swarther* said, due to his low volumr & thick, exotic accent. *"Swarther" is a nonce word I created to easily refer to the individual & his respective swarthiness as one, collective, definitive whole. You're welcome for it, Commoners.

A few lectures isn't enough to base a whole degree on. And besides, it's fun to speak in public. Most people would be happy to give a free lecture, but I doubt they'd be prepared to to 3 months of admin work / sorting mail for the university with no pay. Why would they? They need to eat, commute, pay rent, save for retirement. This whole idea that making a living is somehow malicious just doesn't fly.

I think altruism is an adequate word to describe that spirit of generosity in humanity. The problem I have in listening to this harbinger of change speech is, it is not inclusive enough for me. I am all too aware of the division that exist in Indian society called the cast system. It divides people based on their social and economic backgrounds particularly the ones with darker complexions. Would it not be more equitable for those with excessive amounts of land to give land to those who had none at all rather than those who already had land regardless of the small amount they may already possess. The idealist pursuit the speaker is endorsing requires a change in human behaviour and spirit. There is always hope though as elusive it may be.
