Change your Brain, Change your Life. Revelations based on studying 63,000 brain images across 90 countries over 20 years. How Brain imaging can change paradigms and our understanding of healthy life, no matter where we live.
Physician, psychiatrist, and teacher, Daniel Amen, MD, is one of the world's foremost experts on applying brain imaging science to clinical psychiatric practice. He is widely regarded as a gifted teacher, taking complex brain science concepts to make them easily accessible to other professionals and the general public.
Daniel is the author of 42 professional articles and 28 books, including four New York Times bestsellers. He is the producer and star of five highly popular shows about the brain, which have raised more than 34 million dollars for public television.
Daniel is the medical director of Amen Clinics, Inc., that has the world's largest database of functional brain scans totaling more than 64,000. The clinics have seen patients from 90 countries.
About TEDx.
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos -- or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos -- sparks deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis

Absolutely fantastic talk. Factual, motivating and direct. This was really moving to me because I am someone with a TBI and actually damaged some of the grey matter in my right hemisphere. Alot of the things he says can improve your brain I do, sleep well, am sober, but there are somethings that are not the same and never will be. At one point I couldnt tie my own shoes let alone put my shirt on, now Im working a Part time job nearby. Gotta dream but man, I can get DOWN.

I have wondered how to enjoy retirement past what I have already done? Volunteer work, travel, writing poetry, helping others, etc. I have had to face numerous mental and physical problems but my anxiety and depression disorders got controlled and I no longer are bothered by them! It’s my other worries that keep me from being able to enjoy my end life like blood clots, kidney disease, falls, mild dementia, and I take too many pills!! I want to get more exercise but I still have nerve damage problems. Any ideas how I can get through all this? How I spend my time is trying to help others and that helps me!! Anything else I could do? Thank you so very much.

Yes I just stumbled across this now myself... And sooo glad that I listened.. I think it gave me a huge wake up call seeing those CT scans! Sadly my ex-husband died from Alzeimers and we put down to bad diet of living off sodas (aspartamine sugar free.. Bad news) and chocolates. Sadly from a brillant mind (he was a Computer Scientist), to his brain capacity totally diminished. Very sad indeed, when it could have been avoided. Died at 63

What I always tell myself is... Take the risk of permanent damage seriously, but also don't underestimate the body's power to heal and adjust, especially the brain. The brain is amazingly pliable if you exercise it like a muscle, take care of yourself, and try to avoid things like stress.

Excellent point! I've spent all of 2012 doing prayers and meditation 3-4 x day, and it definitely changes my perspective, renews my spirit, and restores my compassion. And it does not matter what name I give my creator that day, but it does matter that I do it in a spirit of 1) Love; 2) Gratitude; 3) Kindness.

+gloria guerra Prayers are with you Gloria. However not even the most sincere ones would alone change any of the conditions you mentioned above. Your will to change on the other hand will pay off but only if you worked hard toward your goals. Now I can keep telling you this motivational crap the whole day, it will be just that, merely a motivation. But, what if instead of just reading this comment from a random guy that clearly can't just mind his own business and going on with your life, you took a second to think. I want you Gloria to find a moment and a place where you're alone and think about what you can do , think about actions that you can take to solve your problems. I can probably give you some as working out so that you lose weight or adopting a healthy diet for your blood and diabetes problems but those are my ideas and my guess is that they won't work out with you. Rather than that you have to search for actions and habits or even passions that YOU like, that you can do almost daily and that will help you become a better Gloria. Decide and commit yourself to do them. Thank you for reading this comment, I know it's long, I know I need serious help to shut my mouth but I hope I have been a help to you. Have a wonderful day and good luck young lady !

RE: Dr. Amen's mention of diet in hospitals and organizations- it is a horrific fact that classed by the food industry as "secondary markets" (meaning that is where they send the substandard food that does not get sold in "primary markets") are: prisons; schools; hospitals; nursing homes and long term care facilities. In other words, the most vulnerable parts of our population that are most in need of good nutrition are getting the worst quality food, sanctioned by the good old FDA.

I got PTSD as a small child and I was given medications and behavior classes and it was repetitive nightmares everyday and praying for death and ask god to help me and finding people and information like this has been a miracle in my life. I found a hernia been blocking blood flow and the signals for me to breathe and stuff and I kept saying my brain was broken and it took many doctors to get a scan and not more bad diagnosis medications being pushed. I thought my doctors are out to kill me. I'm not there yet but my thoughts and moods and inner life have gotten better. Thanks for understanding and putting this out there. Reform should be a priority even the foods in the stores aren't as healthy as the once were. Some ingredients are so toxic there banned in other countries. I'm 45 and even before having any surgery to relieve the pressure I been doing some of these healthy techniques and I was awake and not as afraid anymore. I believe many people who have generational PTSD from hard lives and bad health , military, anyone could use this way of thinking then how it's been. Pay doctors outright get rid of the insurance companies. I see people out here just not themselves and it's to do with the media and the drug pushers and old ways of doing things. Thanks. Many blessings. I'm trying to find a program to be in near Fargo ND. Codependency and huge issues with some who are in oppression or slavery type situations and many feel caught between the system then messes them up and the streets and I been there but doing some research and find a therapist or doctor that helped me get out of survival mode after 40 years of trying everything. I think this has alot of truth in it and Amen God answers prayers. Thank you.

It is unfortunate that such interesting talks, and of so much content, innovative, cannot be heard or translated into Spanish, for those of us who do not have knowledge of that language. Dr. Daniel Amen is an eminence in the new brain imaging psychiatry. It is very enriching, knowing about their experience. It is a pity that FED does not have a translation into Spanish.

I am convinced that up to the moment I tuned in to this lecture, I had not heard a more comprehensive (within the given time limits) guide of how to have a happy life. Because a healthy body and mind (and this means healthy habits also within the branch of one's psyche = e.g. avoid ANTs) are the basis which allows to stay stable even during hard times. And to all of you, who depreciate this man for the reason he hold to a certain faith: did he mention anything about it during the core segment of the lecture? It seems to me, that there was not a mention of it until he went on to show how one can change the lives of a community. So please be more rational and do not over-react. Thank you Sir for such an inspirational and wise word!

The fact that he does have a faith in Love and good is why he does his good work and wants to help humanity. That's his motivation. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. People commenting on here have no idea what God is so they speak out of pure ignorance. Dr Amen speaks from what he KNOWS to be true. :-)

One of the best TED talks I've ever heard, and this includes regular TED talks too. Great use of humor. Feeling motivated to improve now. I don't even mind the religious aspects that crop in occasionally...looking at that as a form of communal spiritualism. Not a churchgoer myself but a camper. In the great outdoors, I admire and ponder the creations of God / universal energy there. 🙂 ☮
