Traditional healers, herbalists, and folklorists like Brandon Weston are finding that the traditions of Ozark Mountains haven't died out in our age of technology, but rather have been transformed into mediums of healing still applicable in a modern world. Whether it is by physical healing with plant-based chemical compounds, or through the alleviation of psychosomatic symptoms with prayers and charms, these traditional healing techniques still follow the old Ozark saying, "It can't do any harm," and continue to heal even today. Brandon Weston is an Ozark healer, herbalist, folklorist, and writer living in Northwest Arkansas. Brandon is the owner and operator of Mountain Man Healing, and he is an active blogger on Ozark magic and medicine. He also gives lectures and native plant walks throughout Arkansas and Missouri. Brandon comes from a long line of Ozark hillfolk and works hard to keep the traditions that he has collected alive and true for generations to come. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

What a great presentation. I live in the Ozarks in SW MO and have just started learning about medicinal plants here and so far I've found a few on our 5 acres. One of them is called both "Self Heal" and "Heal All" and we have quite a lot of that. After reading up on it I ate a two of the "buds" where the tiny flowers are and after just a bit I could feel it. Best way I can described is "it made me feel good". Later that evening my wife ate one of the "buds" with tiny flowers on it and she said the same thing. Since then I've munched one a day that's been dried. We also have some huge Mullein plants growing in our garden now from seed I cast around last year. I grabbed some of the flower stems off some 2 year plants but really didn't expect them to have any seed left it them. I'm really glad I gave it a shot now. We've been making tea out of that for a few years and that's really great stuff. I'm going to keep working on identifying what else we have growing wild and see if I can get other medicinal plants growing out there. It's been a lot of fun learning more about this.

My grandpa from the Ozark foothills was a "water witch". He had a forked stick in a custom case that he used to find places to dig wells. People paid him for the service.

I had a friend who worked for the water department show me one day how to do it with 2 metal clothes hangers! We were in our late 20s- early 30s! It’s really easy to do. It works every time too! You have too straighten out each hanger with the exception (to where they are almost as straight as they can be, )of a bend from the end ,of each hanger ,a couple of inches from the End! *NOTE :This is very Important: Because it, the Bend gives you a handle that you hold loosely in your hands! Kinda like your holding a gun out in front of you! Hold each wire straight & tightly ( but not too tight) walk somewhere where that you know that your water line is buried. When you get close the Wires will Cross each other! I showed my brothers how to do it. Because all of grandparents & dad who knew how to do this has pass on! I have tried with a stick & it’s a lot harder! But it works every time with the metal hangers! He used it to find a break in the septic drain line & found it & fixed it with 1st shovel hole dug. I was impressed! Hope this helps others out there!🙂♥️Im from the Ozarks, & enjoy the Ozarks & had wonderful Grandparents on both sides & a Father whom I dearly miss!
