Shannon draws on national/local data and personal accounts to confront the difficult realities of food insecurity, challenge harmful stereotypes, and incite hope about advocating for student success through reversing patterns of suffering and division. Shannon has spent several years researching the issue of food insecurity on college campuses, winning the 2019 Hatfield Prize through the Center for Public Justice for her research and continued this work through graduate school. She is currently continuing this work through a grant-funded project to mobilize the recommendations unearthed through her research.
Shannon's TEDxACU talk will draw on national/local data and personal accounts to confront the difficult realities of food insecurity, challenge harmful stereotypes, and incite hope about advocating for student success through reversing patterns of suffering and division. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Our food system is broken. Farmers live on a knife-edge while food manufacturers & retailers earn billions in profits. The majority of the cost of food is related to transport, refrigeration, warehousing, marketing & ads, packaging, salaries & other retail overheads etc. As more countries urbanise (70% approx by 2050) urban food agri is critical - community & school gardens, rooftop & indoor farming incl vertical farming. A rooftop terraced farm at Thalmasstad University (Bangkok, Thailand) not only supplies campus canteens, it also provides excess crops for surrounding communities. Decreased nutrition in young children results in stunted growth & development, awa increased violent tendencies in adulthood.

I remember my "starving student" days. But I never got to eat out in restaurants like this young woman. I remember eating a lot of Ramen noodles or rice with chicken or ground beef patties and carrot stix. In my time, we always thought it built character and the hunger to finish education and get a good job. Most in my day had a part time job too.

Part time Master degree student here, almost 30, with a full time job. I always doubt myself why I’m rushing to campus, having super tight window for meal (in both space-time), meanwhile there is no option to eat after evening class, since most restaurants, and even convenient store, are all closed. That is awful. But I still need my full time job as my career.

Well during my final year at Uni, balancing work and study for an entire year I only had one meal a day that was in my car on the way to university, due to lack of funds (it was food or gas to get me to places I needed to go) and time, I only had 4h of sleep every night, all because I couldn't afford living near any of the 2 places I had to go daily. Needless to say, no food and no sleep, on the last few days I went crazy, had days spent crying in bed, needing help to feed myself, clean myself... failed m last year due to this, tried to commit suicide... spent an year away from uni, focussing only in my career, returned after one year and got my degree (with remote work and classes), if it wasn't for the pandemic (ironically) I don't think I would be able to graduate because removing transportation and its cost, everything was soo much easier. Remote classes should be an option for all classes that don't demand hands-on developments, students shouldn't feel the need to always arrive on time and should be able to see recorded classes on demand. This is also a form of including students that bend backwards to time manage work and study. Most of my colleagues also had to change sleeping patterns to complete its degree, from following the 4h night- 1h nap (instead of lunch) - 1h afternoon nap pattern, it was madening.

Difficult times we face, choices some opt for due to life and needs make them face jail time, our taxes help them survive while in there, and although no first class they are served food, also care if needed, should our future doctors, engineers, lawyers, architects, get that free as well?

Nothing is free, money is needed from "other" people to give free things out to some.

🎓🎓🎓 🎓🎓 In ancient times and in our times, Muslim communities have been at the forefront of INNOVATION and *EDUCATION* ✍️🎓. Gf should go with the textbooks. Fighting over a "perfect" dinner roll is not a sign of hunger, it is a sign of neurosis. Also, stop forgiving student debt.

Stop forgiving student debt when we are going to be teachers which is the lowest paid career ever and teachers I know who are single can't afford to live on their own? Have you been to school? Have you had to take out student loans because otherwise you couldn't go? I hope nobody in office thinks like you.

I invest with Mr. Kyle Miller too, he charges a 20% commission on profit made after every trading session which is fair compared to the effort he put in to make huge profits.
