Human beings are not born racist. Implicit bias, racism and colorism are learned behavior. As an Afro-Latina immigrant from D.R. who moved to the U.S. I've witnessed colorism and systemic racism both in my home and adoptive lands. Do the work, get educated, challenge yourselves, it is really up to us to affect change. Ednin D. Martinez an Afro-Latina attorney and writer who at a young age discovered a strong desire to effect change through social justice, leading to a career in the law. In her career, she represented low-income and disenfranchised individuals as a non-profit and government attorney.
Simultaneously, Ednin pursued her passion for creative writing by participating in prestigious writing workshops like Kweli, VONA Voices and Writing Our Lives. Most recently, she published a non-fiction personal essay titled “When I Was Brave” in Harvard University’s Palabritas.
Through her writing, she aspires to shed light on the racial and economic disparities in the Dominican Republic as well as systemic racism in educational and legal institutions in the U.S. She is currently working on a memoir entitled “Every Little Girl From San Pedro,” highlighting these same themes. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The topic of colorism and the exception of Afro-Latina, Afro-Asiain, and all Afro-ethnicities is such an emotional topic. I agree educating yourself, your children, and their children is the best way to teach belonging. I had tears coming down my face. I can relate. 💦🤍❤💛🧡💙💚💜🖤🤎

Thank you so much for this TED talk. I just came back from the DR for my son's wedding. I could not believe the rudeness and racism I experienced at the resort I stayed. I was unaware of this mindset of some natives and never experienced it in other Latino countries I've visited. I was ignored in the restaurant, I left the bar tender a $5 dollar tip and he put his head down, never acknowledged me nor said thank you. I never felt so unwelcomed while on vacation . Thank you for being a positive change maker and sharing your story. SALUTE!

This is why I was born…my Abuela taught her children that they MUST marry white, blonde, blue eyed people so that they have “beautiful white babies”. The internal racism is so bad :( especially hearing my dark dad talk about being compared to a Haitian as a bad thing, and I was absolutely flabbergasted

@nitheeshbatta2780 The Immigration Commission: Indian: kimois Mongolian in type and assert that he resembles certain natives of northeastern Asia more than he does the American Indian. There is no doubt that there has been migration into America by way of Bering Strait. Only American born immigrants of pure European blood are counted as Cuban, Spanish American, Mexican, and West Indian All these natives of the Western Hemisphere,”together with American Indians and Negroes are included with the Magyar, Turkish, and Armenian races in the term“All others,” the sixth grand division of immigrant races as classified by the Bureau of Immigration. The immigration statistics of the race are of no significance so far as Africa is concerned, for only 15 are recorded as having come from that continent in1907.The American is the smallest grand division of mankind, numbering, with half-breeds, at most or half the population of the next largest race, the Malay. Of these, only live in the United States. Indians do not appear by name in the statistics of the Bureau of Immigration, and the few who may come presumably are counted among "Other peoples.” Since the term Spanish Americans,”under the statistical rules of the bureau, "excludes Indians", presumably "no Indians" are counted in that division of the Spanish race in America called "Mexicans", "nor among immigrants from the West Indies and Cuba who are not Negroes(see these)". It is evidental so that if there be any Indians among the immigrants who came from Canada in1907.

@@Cinnamoncupquake That's pandering to the Spanish-speaking people and it's totally wrong. Latino/Latin (Lingua Latina) is the language spoken by the Romans and their culture. Everything Latin, be it the Latin People, the Latin language, and the Latin Culture all comes from Italy.Being Latins means possessing Roman culture. Latin, whether you say Latin or Latino or Latina it's the same word and it means possessing Roman culture and nobody can change it. Blame Mexican Chicano Frank del Olmo for this mess.

The first person to use "latino" was Napoleón as "L'Amerique Latine" because he wanted to unite French, Spanish and Portuguese countries against the English in the US. Dominicans were colonized by Spain prior to the arrival of the French on the island who later brought in today's haitians. Therefore, that's a term Dominicans, puertoricans and cubans, mexicans etc don't need to use, but hispanic as a countries that speaks Spanish.

Trujillo wanting to change the ethnic population in DR and committing a massacre on the island is something he clearly inherited from his haitian side of the family. It was Boyer who sent many africans from America to DR during the 22-year invasion because, according to him, dominicans were too white. Ironically, those from America supported the dominicans during their fights for the 1844 indepence and became Dominicans after that. Haitians even refered to dominicans as "spaniard" even thought they've been known as dominicans since before the french even invaded the island and before they even brought in today's haitians for the first. Dessalines committed a massacre against the dominican population and would have killed every single one of them as his promise in the "liberty or death" of 1805 if it wasn't for France sending help.

Dominicana no es una sociedad racista porque allí la gente se mezclo, racismo hubo en Haiti, donde nadie se mezclo y los nativos desaparecieron, por eso solo quedan negros

My mom must renew her mica card every so often, one time she was traveling by greyhound to Arizona when immigration law got on the bus, carding people of minority , & while passing my mother an officer saying how are you mam, tipping his hat, walking past her. My mother is tall light skin with blue ring around her light brown eyes.

Some were kidnapped and some were sold. Get the context. They weren't the first and won't be the last. Still doesn't make it right.

Of course Africans csught their own people to sell them otherwise it would not have been possible but whats the use of selling anything if there is no market for it. The Arabs abd Europeans bought them to use for free labour.
