Lemn takes us on a heart-rending personal journey of growing up in NW England care system in the 70’s and 80’s. He speaks about how this influenced his own character and behaviour and was also the inspiration behind The Christmas Dinners for care leavers in Manchester in 2012, which today take place throughout England.
Follow Lemn on @LemnSissay Lemn Sissay is a creative tour de force. Poet, playwright, broadcaster and actor his genius has touched the world. Not bad for a lad from Wigan who’s childhood was in the UK care system in the 70’s and 80’s.
His presence has been felt at the US Library of Congress to the Botanic Gardens of Singapore to the London 2012 Olympics. Lemn is Chancellor of the University of Manchester. His play ‘Something Dark’ is on The National Curriculum as a choice text for our children.
And in 2017 he acted for the first time playing Scully in Jim Cartwright’s ROAD at the Royal Court Theatre. Lemon started The Christmas Dinners for care leavers in Manchester in 2012, and today they take place throughout England. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Every social worker or care provider should have to watch this as part of their training. Learn from someone who actually knows what he is talking about, having been on the receiving end of so called 'care'. Inspirational

I knew Lemn many years ago, when he was still in children's homes. When he was till known as Norman--and worse. He was always a very special individual. What he has done in bringing to light the failings of the care system, and in helping others, has been absolutely phenomenal

Just read his book My name is why... very shocking for me on how he was treated by his Foster parents.... and then being in care. He was failed by the system. God bless all kids in care in the UK

When i hear someone of my past talking through me to my children, i thank God that i realise more, how much we all fail now and then, while meaning well. May we all learn more from each others failures than we blame. May we admit more to ourselves the wrongs we do & keep striving for doing right the next time; Than we say SORRY'S and keep making the SAME mistakes. May we all see ourselves No BETTER than the other; NOR WORSER than the other; But be occupied by good thoughts in our 💞 and minds. That we do more good because whats the 💖 is full of, comes out. In Jesus name🙏amen.
