We spend a minimum of 18 years throughout our lives in the education system. 18 years worth of habits, of constructions of the world around us, of value systems and individual beliefs. Along the way, and especially in the past 10-12 years, there has been an increase of students equating their self-worth with their grades. Peter Brøndum is an associate Professor in Social Science and History at Øregård Gymnasium. He is a published academic and writes prolifically on the topic of society with focuses on digitalization, learning and youth. He occasionally writes and lectures on politics and foreign policy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is the fix the educational system needs. I preach this to my scholars, and too often they've been so inculcated to chasing grades that they end up learning little for the long-term. Toss the grading and evaluate growth by demonstrating competency and capability - if students have learned and are ready for the next level, then send them on

It's better to watch this than watching useless videos on KZfaq. Edit: When I'm feeling down I always watch Tedx to motivate me.

Participating in a state-wide, "ungrading" project that is undoing the tide of handcuffing student progress. Period. While we also focus on discussion of/surrounding the demo/psychographic issues involved (from, race, class, to immigration issues and religions/indoctrination involved on the daily (a bottomless well/pit that will never be resolved), this has opened my eyes to the systemic issues that literally prevent countries from raising the next generation from curing cancer, fixing climate issues, and stemming the tide of oppression. Just stop with grading, and start EDUCATING.
